LordDan Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 As the old tale states “ The Frost Wolves are the king of the mountains. Commanding the power of the frozen North, their breath is pure ice, their body is protected as if by armor, their minds as cunning as men, and they are as swift as a blizzard.” Frost Wolf and base by lorddan413, on Flickr Frost Wolves were said have come from frozen mountains far in the north. In ancient times it was rumored some small packs came down from the north and into Mitgardia, and by some accounts as far south as the Rakath Mountains. Supposedly they flourished in the warmer climates, while their northern brethren died off. However they eventually began to disappear and by 2,500 years ago only 1/4th of the wolves remained. Still small, isolated groups lived on in the mountains, slowly growing fewer in numbers as each generation passed. The last recorded sighting of a Frost Wolf was about 1,000 years ago, deep in the Rakath Mountains in the land now known as Nocturnus and have since faded into legends. They have long been thought to be extinct, and many doubted that they ever existed for real in the first place, considering them to be nothing more than a myth, an old tale made up generations ago. However one has recently been discovered. It was found by Mage, who was exploring* an area along the Nocturnus/Mitgardia border. Mage ventured into a fortress and, after disposing numerous enemies, discovered the wolf chained up in a deep chamber of the fortress. It had been captured by a group of bandits, who planned to use it as a weapon. They imprisoned it up in the fortress and recruited a group of orcs to armor it. They melted armor onto the wolfs skin, adding razor sharp metal claws, a saddle, and added armor to much of its body, coating over existing body parts in some instances and creating new, fully metal part other times. Mage liberated the creature and it became very attached to him. Frost Wolf by lorddan413, on Flickr Mage generously allowed scholars at the University of Petraea to examine this Frost Wolf, although he insisted that he personally supervised all of their activities. Attached is an excerpt from their report… “We have had the pleasure of studying this majestic creature, which appears to be the last of its kind. The old legends don’t do it justice; this creature is even more extraordinary than we could have believed. It stands tall and proud, covered in thick white fur. Despite the crude armor implanted in its body it is still quite agile and is capable of running at high speeds. The Wolf has an extra large claw located on each of its fore paws, which was coated in metal and sharpened by the orcs. A local blacksmith was able to adjust the armor slightly, so it fit more naturally, but the majority of the armor is so deeply attached removing it would almost certainly kill it. Mage also added a banner and guardrails to the saddle, making sure not to harm the wolf. The Frost Wolf appears heal very quickly, and in some parts of its body bone and fur have grown over or around the metal armor. Besides the metal armor the wolf appears to have a natural armor of bone. These bones protrude out of its body in several places. Some act like a single large scale, protecting key areas. Others, such as those on its fore legs jut out, forming very sharp structures that protect the lower leg. … The wolf has demonstrated that it is highly intelligent. A glimmer of understanding can be seen in its bright green eyes and it displays a fierce loyalty towards Mage, who it considers a friend… …One of our most interesting discoveries about the wolf is its ability to regulate its body temperature. It can survive in absolutely frigid temperatures, but it appears to be able to stay cool in hot temperatures as well. We don’t fully understand how, but it appears to be related to its ability to breath ice…” Frost Wolf base by lorddan413, on Flickr Sorry about the long description. I built this a few days after the mini-challenge started but i took a while to build the base and write the story. Enjoy! Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Nice build! I like the irregular base, and brilliant description as well! Quote
Hammerhand Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Cool wolf LordDan! I like it's frost breath. Quote
grum64 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 And the next addition to the Chima theme is... Quote
plew2000 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I think that the legs look great and tough and the eyes work well. Great job. Quote
Jorrith Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Whoa! Now that puts those hobbit warg mounts to shame! Nice mount, and big. :) Quote
LordDan Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 Nice build! I like the irregular base, and brilliant description as well! Thanks! Nice, It looks very bulky and ferocious Yep. I tried to make it look powerful and large but still give off a sense of agility and sleekness. That is one heck of a mount, love it. Yes it is Cool wolf LordDan! I like it's frost breath. Thanks! I had just gotten those pieces from a mixels set and they inspired me to do something that breathed ice. And the next addition to the Chima theme is... Gee, thanks for the encouragement. I did base my legs off of the legend Beast design, but i modified it a lot and made sure it was significantly different from the wolf Legend beast design. I think that the legs look great and tough and the eyes work well. Great job. Thanks! I had a bit of trouble with the eyes. At first i used the regular eyes( white with pupils looking all over the place on the 1*1 circular flat thingy, but it didn't work well with the razor sharp metal claws and all the ferocious parts. Whoa! Now that puts those hobbit warg mounts to shame! Nice mount, and big. :) Yes, the Frost Wolves are a bit more awesome than similar species such as giant wolves and Wargs. Quote
TheUtilityBelt Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 This is great! I love the... everything! Although the green eyes look a little out of place. Quote
ZCerberus Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Good job Dan! Those entries are just flying in. Quote
mrcp6d Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Really nice proportions overall with this, it really looks powerful. Quote
MassEditor Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Very cool Dan, awesome build and very intriguing story! The armored parts are a great addition, and the way you designed the legs is top notch. A real contender for sure! Great work! Quote
mccoyed Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I think it's a great heavy mount. Would like to see some armor but it looks like it's naturally armored. Tankwolf! I do agree that it's fairly different from the CHIMA wolf. I mean, it's hard to make a white wolf and not remind people of the Legend Beast. Quote
LordDan Posted July 19, 2014 Author Posted July 19, 2014 This is great! I love the... everything! Although the green eyes look a little out of place. Thanks! Yeah the green eyes were all I had that worked, everything else just didn't look good so I incorporated it into the discription. Very cool looking beast, great job! Good job Dan! Those entries are just flying in. Really nice proportions overall with this, it really looks powerful. Thanks!!!! Quote
soccerkid6 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Impressive wolf! The legs are excellent and look pretty pose-able which is always a plus Really cool banner as well Quote
Mike S Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Nice build! Definitely one beast one would not want to cross... Quote
Yzalirk Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 The wolf looks pretty good but it's weird how the minifig "sinks" into the back of the wolf. Also, the land part of the MOC could use some white for snow and baby blue or transparent white for ice but that's not too important, other than that nice work. Quote

Definitely one beast one would not want to cross... Yep you definitely don't want to get on the wrong side of this frost Wolf. The wolf looks pretty good but it's weird how the minifig "sinks" into the back of the wolf. Also, the land part of the MOC could use some white for snow and baby blue or transparent white for ice but that's not too important, other than that nice work. Ohh i see what you mean with the sinking into its back. The curve in its back looks fine from the side without the minifig due to the saddle but from the top i can see what you mean. I guess having no fur there really shows you how much farther down its actual body is compared to how big it looks when its fur stands out, kind of like my cat after it gets wet . And in addition to that those evil orcs cut out part of its flesh( nothing too essential) and carved out a dip so the rider would be mostly protected and covered it with metal so it wouldn't grow back. Adding a plate would probably improve it and also make it more secure. You have to fit the minifig in somehow, right? Its kind of like a standard horse piece. Its in Avalonia by the time this painting was made. No snow there in the summer and its icy powers only freezes the ground around it when it want too. Quote

To fix it, you could use more bricks and slopes to fill in the area where the rider is and use certain pieces to make your own custom saddle. Quote
Gabe Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 What a great beast Lord Dan! Really like the shaping on this, it looks very natural. The only thing that looks a bit odd is the rider sitting so far down, almost like he is driving the wolf like a car. But everything else is spot on - the banner is a cool addition as well. Quote
Gunman Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Great entry LordDan! I love that banner too! Quote
