Voxovan Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Like, if this is a true reboot... swapping character genders wouldn't drastically alter the old story, or need an over-complicated and likely poorly done explanation as to why: it's a new world, more or less, with different problems (and the heroes could be of varied genders despite having the same names of their predecessors). I don't know how many times I've said that, but let's repeat - changing gender of Bionicle main characters is just too confusing and controversial and I really doubt LEGO would do something like that. Geez. Quote

Geez. If the old BIONICLE could have an intelligent plant with the same name as an ancient chaos ruler AND the place he ruled (Karzahni), or a robot drone with the same name as a Skakdi warlord (Nektann), then why would it be too confusing for a new BIONICLE to have a character who shares a name but not a gender with a classic character? I also have my doubts that the LEGO Group would do this, and I don't necessarily want them to either. But I don't think it would be bad or wrong or confusing or controversial if they did so. It'd just be a new character with an old name, the same way DC Comics and Marvel Comics have had so many characters with the same superhero or supervillain name. Edited July 18, 2014 by Aanchir Quote

The main characters in DC or Marvel main dimension remain the same, no gender-bending. 2. And what's the point of two different characters having the same name? Aanchir Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 1. That's not really how DC and Marvel universes work, there's a bilion of alternative dimensions, while in Bionicle we've got only a few. The main characters in DC or Marvel main dimension remain the same, no gender-bending. Not necessarily. All three (well, arguably, four) of DC Comics' "Sandman" characters exist in the same continuity, and they even interact with one another. One is an ancient entity older than gods, one is a campy superhero in a brightly-colored suit, and one is a vigilante who goes out at night wearing a gas mask and fights crime using sleeping gas. Likewise, it is common for certain characters to "take up the mantle" of an existing hero or villain. Just look at the "Reign of the Supermen" arc... four characters were fighting for the title of "Superman" after Clark Kent's apparent death. It is not impossible for characters in fiction to share a name. Furthermore, how do you know this new BIONICLE isn't going to be the start of a brand-new continuity? We pretty much don't have any story details at all yet. All we have are the names of some of the characters. Whether or not it's the same continuity, there's no reason the new Lewa would have to be the same character as the old Lewa. 2. And what's the point of two different characters having the same name? If those are different characters, why can't they just simply have different names? LEGO wouldn't do something that weird :/ Are we thinking of the same LEGO? The LEGO I know reuses names all the time. I already pointed out the multiple Karzahnis and Nektanns, but the LEGO Group also repurposes plenty of names between themes, hence the Space Police III character named Slizer, the Drome Racing team called Exo-Force, Hero Factory's elite team being called "Alpha Team", etcetera. Furthermore, there is a very obvious reason for characters within the same continuity to share the same name: later characters can bear their names in honor of earlier ones. This is why the princess in The Legend of Zelda is always named Zelda. For that matter, this is part of the reason for many real-world names. George Washington Carver was named in honor of George Washington. Martin Luther King, Jr. was named in honor of his father, who was named in honor of Martin Luther. Pretty much every single Roman Catholic pope ever has taken the name of a saint (or sometimes the names of MULTIPLE saints) when they assumed the papacy. 3. Karzahni and Nektann are not the main characters of the Bionicle series. Toa Mata are. And there's a big difference between a ruler of a land having the same name as the land that he rules, between two different main characters with different gender having the same name. And yes, it would be confusing and controversial. You keep repeating that... you haven't exactly provided any evidence. If these are in fact new characters, then the original Toa might not even be appearing in the new storyline. It would just be a cool trivia point that the new characters are named after classic characters, whether in-universe or out-of-universe. The Legend of Korra is another example of a series where characters have shared the same name. There are two major characters named Iroh who appear within the same season of the series. One just happens to have been named after the other. And seriously, why would you put gender-bending in a toyline? Yes, adding more female characters would always be good and I'd love to se that, but doing such a change with the main characters isn't really a solution. Come on people. It's not gender-bending if they're entirely new characters. It'd just be new characters who are based on the original characters, who share names that were never established to be gender-specific in the first place. Quote
Voxovan Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) I think we're going a little off-topic right here :L I was referring to the whole gender-bending idea, 'cause, again (:P), it would be confusing and controversial to fans. Heck, it even IS controversial right now. Proof? This whole discussion, we're just keep arguing here whether it is a good idea or not. And look where this all began - this topic started with pointing out that there's not enough female characters in Bionicle, then everybody agreed that LEGO should fix the mono-gender tribes problem, then somebody came up with an idea of changing Toa Mata gender, and we ended up with arguing if the new sets will be the same Toa Mata or not and comparing Bionicle characters to George Washington or popes. Again, as I said - that's not what Bionicle is about, and that whole discussion is just pointless. I makes me feel kinda guilty, 'cause I'm part of this whole "mandess" :P Come on, LEGO doesn't need such drastical changes to make the new Bionicle line succesful. Of course, they can do whatever they want, but I really, REALLY doubt that they actually even thought about changing Toa Mata's gender or something like that, because that wouldn't really improve anything, and Bionicle would be succesful even without it. And please, for God's sake, don't start a war because of gender of characters created to represent plastic toys in a fictional universe Edited July 18, 2014 by Voxovan Quote

I'd love to see more new female characters in Bionicle, I've said that milion times already, but I doubt LEGO will listen to our "prays". Sorry, but Bionicle is a line marketed towards boys, just like Friends is marketed towards girls. That's how it was, and how it will be. LEGO doesn't need to focus on the minority of fans (girls), but on the majority (boys). That's why we're getting so small numbers of female characters in each series - because they aren't necessary to attract the boys and make their parents' wallets slowly becoming more empty It's a shame, 'cause as I said - I'd love to get more females, especially female villains, but it's not like we can do anything about it... I've never said such a thing, maybe you just misunderstood :P [...] Wow, I've just came to this topic and I don't really get some people. While I agree with all of you when it comes to the mono-gender tribes problem, the changing of Toa Mata's gender is just a silly idea to me. Yeah, let's make the whole team female except Gali. What's so good about making Tahu or Onua a female? It's just as great idea as making, I don't know, let's say, Optimus Prime or Darth Vader a woman. They're both iconic characters for their series, and they shouldn't be changed that much. The design change is ok, the gender change - not really. Gender-benders are cool in non-serious fan series, but not in the official ones. Seriously, there are some changes that shouldn't be made, ever. You can as well make something like this: "The Great Spirit Maku Ta, betrayed by his brother, Matanui". Yeah, only their names are swapped, but does it seem right to you? I wouldn't mind the change of some of the Matorans' gender that much, but changing the gender of the main characters? No, just no. Of course, new female characters are always welcomed, especially middle-set female villains (I would love to see that). But as I said, there are some changes that shouldn't be made, ever. tbh when you wrote this it came off heavily as if changing some of the characters' genders to make them more relatable to a wider audience would ruin the story, ruin the characters for the old fans who want to remember them as they were; according to you it'd ruin the icons of the series and that any desire to see such a change is something that's silly and unworthy of the serious story of Bionicle. Like, those are the implications from your examples and statements. So I still stand by what I said. :/ emphasis is mine and is where it's more or less implied that desiring some gender alterations for a more balanced core team is a silly idea that ruins those characters for you (i didn't even touch the sarcasm nor comment on the poor analogy). Voxovan Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) @Loki: I still don't find the idea of changing Toa Mata's gender good. It wouldn't really "ruin" the characters, but I'm sure it would make a lot of fans, me included, fell kinda weird with such a change. And I think LEGO knows that perfectly well. I mean, come on. It is a big change, don't say it isn't. If LEGO actually made Tahu a female, I would still buy it. It would be weird, it wouldn't be the same for me, I wouldn't be happy with it, because that's not the character that I became attached to, but I would still buy it and follow the story. And I think a lot of female fans would still follow the story/buy the sets with male characters, I mean, Bionicle has that unique atmosphere and style that it can gain both male and female fans, in my opinion :/ Plus, I think that you're aiming for something that isn't really going to happen. As I said, boys are the main Bionicle audience. That's how it is. LEGO won't do such big changes just for a fairly smaller group of female fans, just like it would not suddenly put more male characters to the Friends line, just to please some male fans (I'm sure there are some), just like it would not change gender of the Friends main characters. And it's not really sexist, that's just how the toy industries work :l And please, don't say that you can't enjoy Bionicle without it having more female characters/gender-swapped Toa Mata. The series is great as it is/was since the day it ended. Plus LEGO can't really please everybody, that's why it tries to please the majority of the fans :\ And if I offended anybody with my post, then I'm sorry, as I said, I did not want to start an internet war right here :v Edited July 18, 2014 by Voxovan Quote
dviddy Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 IF, and I think this is most likely, the series is rebooted, it already won't be the same Tahu you already were attached to. It'll be a similar character with the same name in a similar setting, but it won't be THAT Tahu. It'll be a new one. Why not a female version? She would already be a new character. Echoes of the past, sure. But new. Quote
the last chronicler Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) I have to say, this is too controversial for a lot of people, and if I had a choice I would keep the Toa Mata the same. I think someone will always disagree on which Toa should be changed gender, or if they should be changed at all. We can only take these theoretical scenarios so far before we drive each other insane, because it's really unlikely that LEGO with change the genders anyhow, considering they followed the 2001 gender ratio exactly for the first HF range, and only added male characters after that. This is becoming less of a "should there be a gender balance" topic as it is becoming a "who is the least sexist Bionicle fan" topic. We all have are own views of the Bionicle characters, a lot of us came into Bionicle with innocent young eyes that have yet to perceive gender structures, others feel that in hindsight this is a reboot and "the greater good" is more important this time around, and others feel that Bionicle was set in 2001 and to stray too far from that would completely redefine the theme. Personally, if LEGO is taking the time to please older fans and use the classic characters, then chances are they are keeping the classic characters. Yes, the physical designs change because of the HF system, but there is clearly an effort to mirror what came before. Edited July 18, 2014 by the last chronicler Quote

They have the same names, will likely hold same/similar personality archetypes, but their designs will be different, the writing for them may be different (actually it will be different as even if they re-hired Greg, his writing now likely isn't the same as it was then -- skills like that usually get better/worse over time pending on lots of factors), so it's not really too much of a stretch to think: Maybe TLG recognizes the poor ratio of gender representation in this popular line? Maybe some people from their company have read fan criticism, or received criticism of that nature, or have had focus groups with people who hold those opinions and will actually think about it. And if they're rebooting, there honestly isn't a better time to fix the 1 in 6 ratio they started (which would mean, for instance, making a female Tahu, or a female Kopaka, or a female Lewa -- or even more than one of them -- as at this point they aren't the same characters anymore and that's an important facet of this discussion). The thing is, Tahu Nuva was a different Tahu, and Stars Tahu was also a different Tahu, yet I care for those sets more than any other in their series. These characters are legends, and our emotions towards them transcend logic, because the VERY MEANING of Tahu comes from the character and nostalgia of 2001. To say that the the name means nothing this time round is to say Tahu could be a Toa of poop, wielding a sword of farts, and it wouldn't matter because it is not the same Tahu. Although gender is less defined in Bionicle, there are many examples were changing the gender changes the character: you can't make Batman a woman without changing his name to Batwoman. I know if I follow this logic all the way that no characters can ever change gender, and tribes would stay the same, and I don't want that. I guess we all have our tolerances and I admit for me there is a difference between changing the main casts gender and changing the gender details within the story. I don't know if I can justify it, but I can say that changing the gender rules won't affect the story and that is fine, but changing the main six is different. Not much different, but different enough. Quote

Difference is -- Stars Tahu, Tahu Nuva and Tahu Mata (And Tahu Phantoka) were all the same exact character with the same exact experience, the same exact writing, the same exact everything -- they were, altogether, effectively one single character. This would be an opportunity for the old six heroes to get a new story, a new development path, new experiences, new histories even -- these Toa were never Nuva, were never Phantoka, were never subjected to Vakama telling a long story about his childhood, they never encountered Makuta, they never did any of the things the 2001 versions of them did. They are all blank, clean slates that will likely just have the base archetype of their personality in common (and names). So... yes, they can alter the gender of some of them if Lego felt it appropriate to do so in order to balance the male/female ratio of the cast and to subvert the precedence of 1 girl per 6 male characters. It doesn't ruin Tahu, since old Tahu has no bearing in this universe as a force of character, and new Tahu hasn't even been written yet. Quote

But you're assuming a complete reboot, and I think if they wanted to do a complete reboot then they might as well come up with new characters. They must see the worth of the original characters and the original plot since they are bringing back the theme (how can you bring in the classic Takanuva without the Nuva?). They could have easily started from scratch, but instead they are retelling a familiar story which I think suggests Lego sees the worth and possible the multimedia potential of the original concept. If you believe that gender is important enough that we must include a social correct male to female ratio, then you must accept that gender is an important enough part of identity, including the identity of the Toa Mata. We shouldn't change the characters to female just to fit some socially appropriate numerical value, the characters should exist because they are genuine and an individual and inspirational. The female characters shouldn't have to share their identity with any previous characters, they should be unique. Besides, the general population of earth is split 50/50, doesn't mean every group of characters has to be this way as well. That's generalizing and almost unrealistic. For this reboot the biggest priority for me is bringing in new elements, a precedent set by HF which I hope continues. Quote

Same with Transformers (I keep bringing that example, but I find this series really similar to Bionicle), where even the designs change a lot (compare G1 Megatron to, let's say, Megatron from "Cybertron" series - a lot of differences in their look), but each Optimus Prime is still the wise leader of the Autobots, while the Megatron is still the evil ruler of the Decepticons. Their personalities and "trademakrs" remain the same. Things like that don't change, even if all those series are basically their own stories which take place in different universes. If LEGO want to change the classic Toa Mata that drastically, it wouldn't be the same Bionicle, they could as well make a completely new series with a different name. JoseManuel Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Well, BIONICLE isn't Marvel or DC. And it doesn't need gender-bending because gender-bending sucks. Quote
dviddy Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Disagree. Let's say, in Marvel Universe, there's plenty of Spider-Men in different dimensions. But they all are the same. Sure, there can be some changes in their history or "adventures", but every Spider-Man is still Peter Parker. It already is not the same BIONICLE if we get a reboot. I don't think you are grasping that. Also, there are several alternate universe Marvel characters with different genders- female Nughtcrawler exists in one continuity, Antonia Stark, the Ultimatr version of Vision is female, etc. not to mention your other examples are not accurate entirely either. Batman is Thomas Wayne in one continuity, Gwen Stacy is Spider-Woman instead of Peter being Spider-Man in one universe, etc. You sure ate trying really hard to discredit the idea of a female Tahu, even though several franchises have done similar things. Kind of weird, honestly. Quote
