I can see having a pole about the 4 vs. 6 wide and all, but saying rounding off to 4.75 feet and all is just a bit much don't ya think? Lets remember why we started with legos...To have fun! Right, right! I'm having fun debating this. It's all in good fun and it's a fun discussion. The poll was my idea and I'm glad we're talking about it. I don't think there's anything wrong with talking about the specifics of scale. When it comes to LEGO some people take their fun very seriously. It's still fun. I don't think anything in this thread has crossed the line.

I'm stuck to the classic 4-wide cars and trucks and 6-wide trains, because I love the old Town/Train sets from 80s-mid90s. Any MOC, which I'm doing in Real brick or CAD is more or less inspired by the style of old Classic town sets. Only few MOCs like the Judas Priest show cars have a scale of 8-wide. And most of my train MOCs are 6-wide, but in the lenghts often close to the real things. just look at my 70s-style German local train. It's 6-wide, but packs in details like an 7 or even an 8-wide.

The current scale-system with 4-5wide Cars, 6-wide trucks and 8-wide Big Rigs is nice, but my vote goes to 4-wide cars. 6-wide Cars, if not a SUV or a 50s-70s US car, are just too bulky for my taste.

The six-wides in the car competion did look mighty sweet, and I think 6 wide and 4 wide cars can definately co-exist, because cars are different shapes and sizes.

My only problem is the old 4 wide trucks.

Some of them look really nice on thier own, but put them next to the new trucks and they look AWFUL :( Those with trailers are also pretty hard to convert while still looking good.

If you were to take a minfiig and blow him up to the size of a real person, he'd be twice as wide with a mellon the size of a hibachi grill. Because of that, you have to options:

You can either decide that a minifig is 5.5 to 6 feet tall, making it 'average height' for a human being. With that, 4-wide is incredibly accurate. Yes, while you can't sit two minfiigs together, if a minfiig were the correct height vs. width, you could. After all, most cars are about 4 to 5 feet wide (more or less), depending on make and model, and that jives with an 'average height' fig.

But at the same time if you decide that a minifig is the width of a normal person, 6-wide is accurate. However, while you can sit two figs together (if you design it right so you can), the figs now look like children or a population of height-challenged individuals. After all, I'm 5'10", and I've NEVER been able to lay down in the back seat of any car and lay flat without having to bend or twist in some fashion.

So the real question that needs to be asked is not what width of car is best, but what is the height of a minfig? Is a minfig a super-wide, average heighted person? Or is a minifig a normal-wide, short person?

It is my dream to build a four door, four seater six wide car that a mini-fig is slightly taller than. So far the attempts look freakish and I am aware I'd have to defy physics in order to get this, but I tried anyway. Oh well...

im sure you were joking hinkley... but i do want to expand.

i think that my view point on this is that there is no true fix for realism in LEGO... furthermore, i think the realization i want people to consider is that you can't use "realism" as an argument for 4 or 6 wide cars. you really have to love it for what it is. and i do.

here is the only thing i really feel strong about concerning this issue... i like the 4-6-8 vehicle variations... i think it promotes personality and emotion in a theme that needs these characteristics, because it is void of them otherwise. see, this is something that is a far greater interest in my MOCing than realism. example: an 18-wheeler should express power, similarly a convertible should be cute. there are ways to convey these emotions through building, one step would be to make one large and one small. that way you get the "feeling" that you feel when you see these vehicles in real life.

i guess you could say, i like capturing the "feeling" rather than capturing the "reality". after all, LEGO is an expression of reality, not reality.

I prefer 4-wide vehicles. I also find they have a very special charm. And I have so many 4-wide vehicles that I am unwilling to buy bigger ones just for continuity's sake. But I must admit that the new 6-wide vehicles look quite detailed. They can only be made so detailed because they are so big. Still, I stick to what I've said: no 6-wide vehicles in my LEGO town (unless they come with a house or another building I really like). I believe the only 6-wide vehicle I have is that truck from train set 4565.

I did consider 5 wide, but as far as I know there are no 5 wide windshields? They'd have to make a new piece. And then there's the practicality problems, ie. there are no 5 long tiles, plates or bricks.

Since I havent bought much Town till after dark ages, I mainly own new 6+wide cars/trucks. And I do think they look good, its nice to mod them to seat 2 minifigs.

But there are 1 or two old 4wide cars I have, and they are pretty fun looking.

So rather than do away with them, my solution is to argue that the 4wide ones are GoKarts or GolfCarts/electric vehicles, which explains the size and seating only 1 minifig. This works great on all those little 4wide racecars when we place them next to the new 1/24scale Ferrari racers...

It's time to move on to the future of realistic cars. Six wide, two seaters! Since LEGO is making a jump in realism and adding more details to it's buildings like CC and Market Street the cars should be more realistic too.

I couldn't agree with you more Hinckley. I really dislike it when I see a set with a one minifig-wide car. Almost as much as I dislike some of the puny helicopters they try to sell...

4-stud cars can be for Smart Cars. Which, Hinckley, are slightly less useful than riding lawnmowers. Or jetskis, which can traverse double the area of any car, due to 70% of the world being water.
