You can have a classic town feeling with 4 stud wide cars. But sets like Cafe Corner, Market Street and Green Grocery are more suited with 6 stud wide cars, as both the buildings and the cars look more realistic that way.

You can still use 4 stud wide windows for trucks and other extremely big 8 stud wide vehicles.

I measured the width of a trolley on my way to work today... to be realistic in size (minifigure scale), it would have to be 12 studs wide (windows on both sides - 2 studs, 2 rows of 2 seats - 8 studs, a gap in the middle - 2 studs).

I voted for 4-wide, but I'm still not entirely certain. Though I really do like the detail of 6-wide cars (that SUV in the horse trailer set is beautiful!), Brickenridge is composed of 4-wide cars and 6-wide trucks. I think these are quite realistic, and wonder whether the entire town would have to be rescaled if a change were made.
