legolandia Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Sale has started in UK. One Sandcrawler (with free Yularen and poster) on the way. Quote
Fuppylodders Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Apologies anio, you do raise some valid points. I just dont think it is as bad as you were making it out to be. The problems you mentioned are apparent, but i am unsure some of them are avoidable. The rear red section looks similar fashion as the ties cockpit, except as it is a larger curve, is difficult to achieve any smoother, perhaps even if studded pieces were included. We all know what tlg are like for gaps... So while, on a ucs there shouldnt be, it is no surprise there are gaps, and im sure that while it shouldnt be down to aftermarket fixing, it could be easily fixed. I think its problems are rather minor in comparison with the overall look of it and its various shapes/features thatthey arent really an issue, whereas there isnt a lot to go with the Tie except a ball and 2 massive flat wings, that any flaw will be easily picked up and jumped on. And i stand by my thoughts that they have made the cockpit of the Tie look like it has had its front rammed into a rock and looks too flat due to their method of creating the ball. That definitely isnt screen accurate despite people saying the cockpit does look accurate, and is the main problem i have with it. Quote

Regarding the skirt (the red part of the ship), it sure has a very "messy look". Using slope-tiles would look a lot better (like this moc: http://www.eurobrick...00#entry1188491 ). I suspect LEGO has used a lot of curved, bigger parts to keep the piece-count down (and thereby making the set cheaper?). Some might feel that all the flat tiles on the front of the model is a good thing. I personally feel it would look better with some more studded parts. Still, it is IMO a very very good loking UCS set (wich I just ordered from LEGO online) It will be exciting to see what kind of modifications i can do to make it even better... Khaled Yousef Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 So, what would you as a Designer do better for the structure+design of our "so beloved" TIE Fighter. I cannot understand all these people who only complain about TLCs Sets but with no hints now to Do it better.... For me, it is a set boring to build BUT fantastic replica of the film-TIE. What's your problem man? I made a comment on my opinion on how boring that design looked, and some people agreed, why you chose to direct your attack and sarcasm at me? (yeah, I can see how you wrote Designer with capital D) Quote
legolandia Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 I would like to wear that Boba helmet... Now instead of that Constraction rubish why doesn't lego bring out a lovely helmet like that? It would make a lovely UCS. Quote
BrickCommander Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 No. Nothing to do with that. Absolutely nothing. I didn't even keep that MOC built. I can not understand that this model made it as a final product offered to customers. Some fun facts: $200 is exactly the price point 75060 was developed for from the start. Currently the only known problem with this set is that it is selling faster than we can make more. The initial production run sold out in no time, and it wasn't a small number of sets either. It is still the best-performing LEGO Star Wars set since its launch in January. Now I am a little sad that you, Anio, are not satisfied with the final product. Of course you are more than welcome to post your own opinion. Even repeatedly and unrelatedly so if it makes you feel better. But you have to be aware that making wild (and wrong) assumptions and operating under misaligned expectations makes you come across as a disgruntled fan builder who knows better than the whole LEGO Star Wars team and everybody concerned at Lucas Licensing combined. Isn't this way below you, as a Star Wars builder of some reputation? Just let go of your anger :) Bonus fun fact: the way element bag packing works these days makes the number of different elements mostly irrelevant in set design, and only a secondary monetary consideration for packing. On the contrary, using too many elements of the same kind can cause problems in production. And at the end of the day still 1996 elements have to be packed for your 75060 building pleasure! :D Quote

I made a comment on my opinion on how boring that design looked, and some people agreed, why you chose to direct your attack and sarcasm at me? (yeah, I can see how you wrote Designer with capital D) capital letter was only "auto-correct" from my iPhone.. My writing was nothing against you in person, but to all the people "always complaining". Greetings. Hendrik Quote
Lobot Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Thanks BrickCommander, it's good to hear that the set is selling so well. I think it's fair to say that it isn't perfect, but that's understandable given the complex shape of the original. I really enjoyed building it and it's one of my favourite UCS sets to date. It's one of the few OT ships that's truly iconic, and TLG has done a great job of translating it into a set that the vast majority of fans highly regard. Please can we have either a UCS AT-AT, Nebulon B or TIE Bomber next! Quote
Fuppylodders Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Im wondering, on the size comparison between Anio's and TLGs version. It looks like TLGs version is a bit bigger, and so Anio's (successful) way of doing the red sloped bit wouldn't work as easy as on TLGs version... I do however think it is an amazing looking set that clearly fills a lot of people's desires to own an ultimate slave 1 without using bricklink and designing it themselves. I for one (of many) am looking forward to adding this set to my collection. Quote
Khaled Yousef Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Sir von Lego: thanks so much for explaining, I’m sorry too if I misunderstood you. But I am still one of those expressing their dislike of that set, so I still get some share of your writing, don’t you think. The internet is full of weirdoes like me who keep complaining about stuff; pay us no attention and you’d realize by time that we’re harmless. People won’t stop buying the set just because a bunch of people said it sucked. I wasn’t criticizing a MOC you created; neither was anyone else, so I see no reason why you would be upset of our harsh criticism of a product that was supposed to please us as fans and failed. If I was criticizing a fellow member’s MOC I’d definitely provide more constructive criticism. But when I’m criticizing a set it would be futile to provide ideas for improvement because the set was already made and they won’t change it, it’s up to MOCers to use the parts to create something better, and that’s what we do much later, after we’re finished complaining a lot on the internet. And that iPhone of yours is stupid; there is no grammatical reason why that word should be capitalized, you should switch to Android. Quote
Anio Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Im wondering, on the size comparison between Anio's and TLGs version. It looks like TLGs version is a bit bigger, and so Anio's (successful) way of doing the red sloped bit wouldn't work as easy as on TLGs version... The way I did my model doesn't work at a bigger scale (basic rule for ANY MOC : Do, not, stack, wedges). This is precisely why I choose to do the model not so big. TLG's design is bigger, and their method doesn't work either. They should have go for a new wedge 4x3 sloped 45° (or something similar ; you get the idea) left and right. 75060's bigger scale enables to do a very nice looking tail, though. Bonus fun fact : I have been in touch with other Lego designers who do care about the production process. It is called optimisation. I am not sure, but as far as I understood what I were told, with a given budget, reducing some costs may open new opportunities for the design. A little more parts (such as accessories for minifigs for example), new color (existing part but in a new color), printed parts (better than stickers), sometimes new parts (I mean new mold), etc. :) Quote
Khaled Yousef Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Anio: could you please provide a link to your model? I’m a big fan of your work and I’d like to see what you’re talking about here. Everyone here seems to have seen it but I’m not sure I remember which one was yours. Quote
Anio Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 See my profile. Scroll down and you will find it. Or http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=460013 and https://www.flickr.c...57627384322260/ Edit : the back has been simplified/optimised after I did the pics. Cause all those little parts, let's be honnest, it is a pain to build. Quote
Khaled Yousef Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Hey, I absolutely LOVED that model when I saw it before, didn’t know it was yours, but I decided back then that this is how I’m going to build my Slave I. I actually prefer the “skirt” on your model than the official set, I think reddish brown works better, and the greebling on the bottom of your model is still unmatched by the official set, however, there’s a certain charm to the official one that I can’t deny. Perhaps a perfect ship would be a combination of the two. Great job man. Quote

(Not a VIP member.) EDIT: So I heard The Death Star is retiring. Anyone know exactly when we are talking here. End of this year, or even month? I really wanted a chance to get this set. Had it in my old collection and it was probably the thing I miss the most from it. Edited May 3, 2015 by Kingslayer Quote
Darth Dino Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 So I heard The Death Star is retiring. Anyone know exactly when we are talking here. End of this year, or even month? I really wanted a chance to get this set. Had it in my old collection and it was probably the thing I miss the most from it. Hi i am wondering the same. On all local shop webpages that have a discount on the DS there is this message: *Hurry! Limited availability of Death Star (10188) at discounted price. It may mean two things, that only the DISCOUNTED DS is limited or that the DS in general is now a limited (out of production) set. For the later case, i want to buy a second copy of that set. ALL UCS sets (and high detail sets) bevome ridiculous after, arket prices here in Germany. The Lambda Shuttle is now 600-800€, the SSD 700-1000€, both MISB. I always use this effect to get money for future Lego purchaes ;) I still dont know if this is the final sign of retiring of the very very very old DS. Dino Quote

In your past experience when do sets normally get retired? Seems strange that none of the other sets would have this message too. I just sent an email to LEGO so I probably wont get a response until a few days. Also just how valid are the rumours that there will be a new Death Star in 2016? Quote
Darth Dino Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 (edited) Hi please keep us updated. 2016 will be the TFA year, and as long as a new DS is not the major feature in TFA (which i doubt) there will be no DS set for a long time. Lego will have to fill market needs for villian und hero space ships from TFA. The only other "big playset" rumor that sometime comes up is about a retiring Ewok Village and a replacment with a new cloud city UCS-like set. Bit the DS is still out of any system of releasing and retiring... its the DS and its a TRAP :) Edit: Last hint for a soon retiring DS: On every PRODUCT page from Lego (not the shop page) there is no Red Five and no DS, even in all sets or exclusives. http://www.lego.com/en-gb/starwars/products/exclusives Have these sets been there ever or are they put off that page because both are retiring? Robianco Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I think those considering picking up the DS in the hopes they'll be selling it off for two or three times the price in a couple of years need to consider that this has been on sale for 7 years and almost every minifigure included has been updated. Anyone that wanted one has got one and there is no exclusive figures to leverage a high mark up against. Quote
