Nokturn Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Just went to the Toys R Us and Target midnight openings in Melbourne, Australia. What a complete farce. Toys R Us had no TFA Lego, that's right, zero stock. Target had Rey's Speeder, The Falcon and Tie but not the others. Not surprisingly scalpers were filling trolleys with these and leaving the new constraction figures. I hope the rest of the world fairs better because it was a complete waste of time down here! Good luck! That is... extremely worrying to say the least. I'll have a heart attack if I can't pick up the sets I've been wanting for months tonight. Quote
darththeling Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I can't find the CDN prices for these sets anywhere... not really enjoying this roll out of secrecy. Does anyone have a link/list to the Canuckistanian prices? I'm hoping at retail they don't inflate the prices even higher. It's been known to happen. Disney likely is enjoying their big retail sales event whipping fans into a frenzy but for collectors like me who like to plan out their buying over several months it's a real pain to not have at least even the prices available. None of the vendors up here in our tundra wasteland have their websites ready with the new wave. Let's hope this isn't the format for Rouge One, etc.... they have a film each year coming out for the foreseeable future and we do not want this level of secrecy every year. Based on what Lynx reported, I wonder if all of these sets where based on (early) drawings rather than finished models. Maybe we've got more surprises (ahem, screen inaccuracies) in store once we open these. Still - it'll be a fun challenge to mod it. For tomorrow's event I think the smart plan on buying is (unless you have stacks of cash set aside), get the smaller ones first or ASAP. Rey's Speeder and the Snowspeeder will likely be the first to go since they are the two smallest price points. As for the Falcon and bigger kits? I'm sure they'll be comfortably hugging shelves until at least Christmas. Quote

Darth Caedus Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 You know...I'm pretty tempted to avoid buying a lot of these sets, if only because Lego has a tendency to remake Star Wars sets over and over for the course of many years. That, and a lot of these characters will probably reappear in cheaper sets down the line. I mean, it'll be three years before Episode VIII. I'm guessing Finn and Kylo and Phasma will appear in smaller, cheaper sets at some point, like in Microfighters or something. Lego will want to milk these molds for awhile. And maybe we'll get Santa Phasma in the 2016 calendar. I've analyzed this extensively over the the 2016 thread, but this is exactly the wrong tack to take. Lego's days of constant remakes and rehashes are done - new movies and TV every year guarantee the majority of sets will be based on new material. Additionally, Lego has a very clear policy of never letting the biggest bad guys leak into smaller sets. Kylo Ren is Vader status and will be treated the same way - Vader is, at the cheapest, in an $80 set, I'd guesstimate a similar cutoff for Kylo. Finn will probably pop up cheaper down the road, but Phasma is less of a safe bet. But Microfighters? Don't count on it. Lego has indicated they have no desire to put in any kind of named villain in a Microfighter with the Series 3 TIE Prototype - it would have been the perfect time to release a cheap Inquisitor, but instead it is just a TIE Pilot. And that's a one-season villain from Rebels. Kylo is leagues above that in importance. Quote

Well, I really don't want to blow $300+ for all these sets--I just can't afford to do that. For me, my choices are among clearance sets, buying the individual minifigs on eBay or Bricklink, or else getting their keychains from the Lego Store and doing the old "yank and pretend this is an actual minifigure" technique. SonofTheShire Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Kylo Ren is Vader status Darth Vader is the most iconic Star Wars there is. Kylo Ren might not even survive his first movie... He's really not Vader status. Maul status, maybe, but we can't really be sure of anything until we actually see him in action. (Also, Vader has been in a few small sets. There was the tiny Final Duel I and Darth Vader Transformation, as well as the more recent 2009 TIE Advanced and the 2014 Advent Calendar.) Quote

Villains don't always last so long and even if he does make it past this movie, he could look completely different. I do think he'll be in at least one other set though. Quote
DarthPotato Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 As others have said, Episode VIII is 2 years away. And in the time before that, we've got Episode VII sets that haven't been covered yet, Rebels Season 2 sets (and maybe even Season 3 sets), and Rogue One sets. I doubt we'll be seeing many remakes/rehashes from this point forward. LEGO will be a lot more careful with their set choices. Quote

There was the tiny Final Duel I and Darth Vader Transformation, as well as the more recent 2009 TIE Advanced and the 2014 Advent Calendar.) Kylo is of course not Vader status not in terms of actual place in the canon, but in terms of marketing, sure he is. He's plastered over every piece of TFA merch. As for Vader in small sets, all those examples don't count: Advent calendar is a gimmick version, 2009 is shortly before the SW line truly entered its 'modern' phase, and the classic Final Duel I and Vader Transformation are ancient history when lego still allowed major characters to be purchased for less than 10 bucks. (Nothing captures the dramatic shift in minifigure policy better than the 1999 Jedi Duel where you could score Quigon and Maul for 6 bucks to the 2015 Infiltrator where the only option for those figures is 90 dollars). Vader came in a $40 Advent Calendar last year. As stated above, gimmick versions don't count - holiday Vader is cute but not acceptable for any kind of diorama, actual play, or insertion in another set. But I couldn't blame you for hunting down Kylo on bricklink or ebay. $120 is a lot to lay out for what is now clearly an inaccurate-to-the-movie design based off concept art. Honestly though, your best bet is to think the opposite way: just buy a Command Shuttle on release day, keep the Hux and Kylo and sell off the ship and other figures over the course of this holiday season as all the sets sell out, and you'll quite likely make most or all of your money back in the flurry of people rushing to get their hands on the new sets. As others have said, Episode VIII is 2 years away. This is the real bottom line. May 26 2017 is the Episode VIII release date, and that means we might only have ONE more TFA-heavy wave before it. Don't believe me? Watch: Sept 2015: TFA kits Jan 2016: mixed wave, a couple midrange TFA kits which will likely hit the many characters left out Spring/Summer 2016: likely half a dozen sets like summer 2015, probably a mix of mostly TFA with perhaps a Rebels s2 kit. Sept 2016: Rogue One wave. Jan 2017: Additional Rogue One sets along with other assorted small stuff, battlepacks, microfighters, etc. as we see in Jan 2016 Spring 2017: Episode VIII sets. And then if there's any other sets that year, they'll be more Episode VIII stuff. So, really not a ton of time to dwell on Episode VII. And the short turnaround guarantees zero remakes of any of these Sept 2015 sets, and low likelihood of major characters repacked into smaller kits - not enough time will have elapsed. Best case scenario I'd see a Finn/Kylo $80 kit, and maybe Hux, Phasma, and BB8 pop up in $30ish sets. Quote

But anyway: As stated above, gimmick versions don't count - holiday Vader is cute but not acceptable for any kind of diorama, actual play, or insertion in another set. -- You'd be surprised what I'm building for my Advent Calendar Santa figures. However, another thing to consider is that there is a strong likelihood that Kylo Ren will survive past TFA, meaning that in the Episode 8 sets we're sure to see newer, alternate versions of Rey, Finn and Kylo, along with Poe and whoever else makes it to the next film. I also think we won't see Luke till the 2017 wave either, simply because it seems his role in TFA is far less than what it potentially could be in Episode 8. Quote
