Is there an alternative for this driveshaft solution?

This thing is awesome on large scale models but I'm looking for more compact solution if there is any, since I don't want to upscale my model just to fit the scale of this part.

Any suggestions?

But yiu need to brace that gear assembly or else its just gonna spin...

What about a combo of 2 U joints and a red clutch catch over ring?

Actually I think it needs some support to keep from spinning when either of the axles is turned. I suppose it shouldn't be too hard to do by replacing either of the 2M beams with a longer one so that its other end is between other parts of the structure. Also having the input and output axles aligned is possible, but then we're back to a rather complex structure.
