zephyr1934 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Time for a new Idea Book. Yes and no. A good idea book is very demanding to produce. The market is probably too small for lego to do it and the demands too large for hobbyists to do. Rather, if/when it is confirmed that there will be no Creator train in the foreseeable future then I think it will be time for a new hobby train designed by AFOL's, independent of the Lego company. If we want this hobby to continue we need some gateway to encourage others to take up the hobby. There are many builders in this forum who could produce a train that is better than anything that will appear in a lego set. While the lego designers are very talented, we are not constrained to part counts, the lego design requirements, or to make it friendly to children under 16 (yes, the Creator trains are marked 16+, but there are many 6-8 year olds who have built them). What I envision is starting with the blue cargo train set 60052, bring in (mostly) common parts and expand it into several creations that would appeal to AFOL's around the world. That means N. American designs, Euro designs, etc. Then produce instructions so that new and experienced train builders can purchase the set and quickly MOD it into a train that is even more appealing to the given buyer. Using 60052 to get the train parts and common parts for the rest means that new builders will not have to scrounge around for too many new parts. Probably the best way to do so is to have another competition, similar to the recent RailBricks competition; but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
MusicaRibelle Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 That sounds like a very good idea. I'm not skilled enough to contribute much, but I would certainly 'consume' such a product and gift it to others.

cimddwc Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 So "Metro MDP" has now become "Heavy-Haul Train" for this set number. Hmm, interesting... The former source was apparently a Czech shop, where does the new name come from?
Daedalus304 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Hm, the age range and the addition of the word `novelty` have me wondering if it`s just a polybag.

In the space of less than a year I've gone from 'yey, official Lego train sets' to 'pfft, how childish', thanks to my ability to steal everyone else's good ideas and make it look like my own work, lol. (Also, as a Brit (which is technically European), HE and the Yellow freight set appeal to me a lot more than the blue freight set.) As a result I wasn't all that interested in the current train sets (outside of any possible new Creator set), but your idea suddenly makes me very keen to pick up one just so I can see what I can build out of it. This Comes from the 2015 PRICE LIST - NIP Extended Assortment It may well have been, but all we see is a huge lump of gibberish. Edited January 8, 2015 by Redimus
tsi Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 60098 Heavy-Haul Train Novelty Interesting! There is a locomotive, called Novelty.
Darth Punk Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Interesting! There is a locomotive, called Novelty. Looks like you could use that to make beer, nice!
Redimus Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) Yeah, but considering Novelty was an abject failure of a locomotive that took part in the Rainhill trials, and the Rainhill trials already have a very famous Loco to remember them by, I doubt that's what they're selling us. Also, it can be be described as a light passenger loco, not a heavy haul loco. Edited January 8, 2015 by Redimus
Stefaneris Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) According to Wikipedia, there are also other locomotives named Novelty (there's a list on the link tsi had posted). Three of these four locomotives are steam engines, however the last one is a diesel engine which was built to pull freight trains. It was the number 86235 of the British Rail Class 86. http://en.wikipedia....h_Rail_Class_86 EDIT: They also pulled passenger trains, the picture on wikipedia with a engine with the word "freightliner" confused me. andythenorth Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) Eh? Lego never name the set for the trains that inspired it (if any), because the foamers would be bouncing up and down counting out how many rivets were out of scale. So forget about Novelty being the name. Novelty is a retail term, so it's probably a small polybag set, something like http://shop.lego.com...Listing=listing Or it is a new Creator train set, mis-categorised. Probably one like this http://shop.lego.com...Listing=listing Edited January 8, 2015 by andythenorth
Cyrtanthus Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) To remove the speculation "Novelty" is a Status reference to New Sets being released in 2015, 2014 sets being retained are marked as Carryover and sets being discontinued are given a Status of Outgoing. Apologies for Confusion as I just copied a portion of a Sales and Marketing Spreadsheet. And the Price is the Same as 60052 Cargo Train on the List Edited January 8, 2015 by Cyrtanthus
dr_spock Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Thanks for the term explanation. Sounds like a red cargo train type release that happened a couple of years ago.
legonerd54321 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 I'd love a new City train! I admit, the Blue Cargo train that came out last year was pretty cool. Maybe this one would be as good, but cheaper!
1974 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 the foamers would be bouncing up and down I'm intrigued - what the funk does that mean, Andy? Now, I gave good, precise, info on the last trains and I do have knowlewsgy,hh ... what ... nonono! . .tyrty ik"!#T6 ,fdhgogn.... arghhhhh ... To be continued
CityBuilder Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Another new train? Interesting, I hope we find out more soon.
firstofminifigs Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I doubt the addition of a steam locomotive to a modern 'City' line. Based on the currently released City trains, my guess is a European diesel freight or a GE Evolution series based locomotive.
v6TransAM Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 We need less Eurpean and more American locomotives, be it steam or diesel. Overall history is 90% European. Either way I hope the set is a good design, current freight set and previous freight set have nice engines, so either way I hope that continues. If we get another new train set, maybe that means Lego train is doing better than the doom and gloom here predicts. It also still leaves hope we may see another nice Creator train as well if they thought a City set was worthy as well.
