If I remember correctly, Cargo Train (yellow one) was 180€ and SuperPack was 220€. It included train (180€), train station (40€), switches pack (17€) and tracks pack (17€). So, basicly switches and tracks packs were free (34€discount).

no, no, no... we need a creator train, one that isn't HE Creator expert trains were the perfect set. They were more detailed and excluded all the stuff you don't need which normally drives the price up (like tracks and electrical parts), so you could afford 2 sets to make a proper train. Why are all the good things going EOL just after my dark ages. First the modulars have gone all kiddie looking, now we are loosing the trains.

We need less Eurpean and more American locomotives, be it steam or diesel.

You mean you "would like" and not that we "need" as I would say exactly the opposite. Far too sweeping a statement to make and there will probably never be a perfect balance in Euro vs US locos in LEGO!

Cheers

Rather, if/when it is confirmed that there will be no Creator train in the foreseeable future then I think it will be time for a new hobby train designed by AFOL's, independent of the Lego company. If we want this hobby to continue we need some gateway to encourage others to take up the hobby.

Very well spoken, zephyr. As a train-enthusiast AFOL I always encourage not only TFOLs, but kids with 6-10 years visiting our exhibitions to build, imagine their own, starting with their one city set to explore their possibilities, and if there is enough time, I can show them some building tricks, too. I'm really sad with the new City passanger train, after the very good red commuter train they created something uncreative again, and if basic train sets doesn't serve to expand kids and TFOLs imagination well, we, the community should do something about it.

i'm afraid I don't understand. I'm an AFOL and just got 60051 recently. 7938 never appealed to me, but the new one did. IMHO, it looks much nicer and looks more realistic. What is the problem with 60051? Is your issue just the one-piece molded nose, vs. a fully brick built front end?

Are you just coming from the perspective of a child's build experience?

60051 = 7897 = Playmobil, err, I mean DUPLO! Yeah that's it  Good thing for TLG that they don't do B/C/D models anymore ..

(I actually have two 7897 fronts that my son found one day : what's this dad? what is it doing in the train (spare) box??" <-- I dunno my son, I really dunno)

My perspective is that LEGO is not a toy just like playmobil, but something you can use for your endless imagination. Maybe the trains looks a little bit better with the one-piece nose, but those kids will never experience following the instructions how to build something from little, common parts, as they could build it with the 7938 set. Just put the big piece on the end, and you are done. And you could never use that piece for anything else. On the other hand - you could open the hinge-glass part on the 7938 train, which gives more playability to the train. Maybe AFOLs don't open it on shows or for their own pleasure at home, but for kids it's important. I'm also still sorry for the completely lack of train doors in the last years, or solutions like openable double-deck car roof.

I buy the SuperPack last year for 179 € in Belgium. Fine deal !

I understand what you mean but I don't agree with condemning the whole set just for the one-piece nose. Out of an entire set (~600 pieces), there's ONE aspect of the train design, the nose, which is not customizable. Sure, by why is that such a big deal? You still have the rest of the set, other than train specific wheels & bogies etc. of course, which is all brick built.

As for the lack of doors, I agree. That is unfortunate. 7938 had that problem as well, did it not (for the passenger cars)?

I think all the recent World and City passenger trains lack passenger doors. 4511, 7897, and 7938 don't have them. Some people MOD their own doors. I guess that's the thing with LEGO, don't like what LEGO supplies, MOD it. ;classic:

@Inzane: well, the point is that the new passenger trains are not a great value for the money, imho.

TLG made a deliberate choice of making the passenger set the starter / cheaper one, and the cargo set the more complex / advanced / expensive.

In doing that, they have kept the passenger trains a bit less interesting for my taste.

I'm sure they made the right choice, since they repeated the same pattern a few times and sales continue to go up.

Imho, the cargo set just seems to have more potential for modding and moc-ing -- one could ignore completely the car and loco designs and just use the basic train components.

I bought the same superpack 2 years ago. It was actually cheaper than the train alone. I think I paid 143 Euro for it, which I consider a really good price. It was that pack that brought me back into trains.

I've bought the same super-pack (66405) for 135 euro in the netherlands. The new superpack retails for 189, but i'm sure it will drop to about the same price somewhere in the next months (in a sale somewhere)

... certain parts of Europe like New Zealand and Greenland.

Err New Zealand is not in Europe..

I'm sorry, I had to laugh out loud at this. We tell jokes about how little 'mericans know about geography but they're not as good as this one...

New Zealand is not in Yurp, but Old Zealand is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeeland

And there's another Zealand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zealand

Oh, and of course Greenland is not in Europe either.

I'm in Denmark...

Hey, so you own Greenland and one of the European Zealands ;-)

I have been informed that the next Creator train will arrive in Q3 of this year. Little other information is known, but it's a reliable source at least.

That was a pretty silly mistake. I guess I wrote it like that cause I wasn't sure whether it was Europe or New Zealand or Greenland. I could've worded it a bit better. To be fair though, the US is quite a bit larger, and we focus mainly on the Americas in geography, instead of the whole world. Is there any vague information yet? Even a crude guess can finely hone the edge of knowledge. I imagine Lego won't do a high speed train, and that's all I can realistically postulate. That leaves us with steam or diesel. I'd be happy with either one, but I'd imagine something based off of the North Coast Limited. Since it's being released quarter 3, that means we could have a unofficial Christmas train if it's a steam train. Give it a brake van, cargo/luggage car, a diner car, and a observation car, all pulled behind a Pere Marquette styled 4-8-4 locomotive. That's what I'm hoping for anyways.

I highly disagree with the comments made about 60051. When I was a child, 7897 appealed to me more than any other set, as well as all my friends because it has the custom nose piece. Having a special, aerodynamic piece was unreal, because it was no achievable with normal LEGO bricks. Because LEGO introduced custom nose pieces for planes and helicopters that year, it did not seem un-normal.

Kids love custom nose train pieces, or the majority that I have seen as it is a huge play attraction and adds heavily to the realism. I definitely believe 60051 is a so much better than 7938 as the set flows with its design and overall has a far higher quality feel to it. The aerodynamic look could never be achieved with bricks, at the cost and demographic. CITY sets are aimed at lower demographics lets not forget, children like the simplicity of just opening the top of the train, instead of having to try and wedge figures through small doors, which they will have to open the top anyway.
