I did the math, and the Heavy Haul Train will cost 140.49 euro for you guys.

How did you work that out? $160 at today's exchange rate? Unfortunately the world doesn't work that way. If it's $160 then it's usually €160...

I'm not the best at converting money. :cry_sad:

For those interested, user 'L@go' who took the photos has just said that the Metroliner-esque train we've seen is in fact a MoC. As expected, but such a horrible tease :cry_sad:

It looks like the middle car of the 7938 passenger train set. It might be easy to recreate.

But seriously is that the best engine design they could of come up with......it's similar to the 2010 one, so does that mean every five years the same front end reappears ?

Playing Devil's advocate here, but with the way Power Functions is set up inside the train, their design options are sort of limited. Either they plate over it like with "60098" and 60052, they build a shell over it as with 7939, or they disguise part of the guts with new colors a-la 3677

Also, it's hard to come up with *that* many generic 'modern' locomotives before you start becoming a little too specific for a train that is meant to sell world wide.

Considering what style of locomotive they were trying to emulate it would have been better to disguise the battery box as part of the overall build, they could have easily built detail features such as fans or grilles on top of it, they could of then filled in the rest of the body with plate and tile construction suspended by brackets to add further detail.

And still have a stud's space on the side for a minifig? And still be (roughly) 6 studs wide? A tall order that.

Then perhaps Lego need to speak to a few of our Train Tech's eh ?

The ones who can PF cool train designs ?

Now to head in a different direction it has just come to my mind.......2010 two city trains + 2011 city exclusive............2014 two city trains + 2015 city train (exclusive ?).....a pattern of city train sets ?

Well they were able to do it relatively easily with the locomotive in 3677.

While I agree that the new City train isn't great from an AFOL perspective, I'm quite happy with it. It appeals to me since the engine and hopper both remind me of 70's German rolling stock.

I'll probably ditch the helicopter and use its flat car to build another hopper, and both the hopper and engine will get a rebuild to look closer to particular prototypes, but on the whole they are good starting points. My biggest disappointment is the use of blue glass in the engine. I will be bricklinking replacements for those. Overall I think this is the best suited city train to my tastes since 7898 Cargo Train Deluxe. I may even buy two.

There seems to be a lot more criticism for this train than for the blue cargo train, but the cattle car in that was clearly laughable, and it also had very simple flat cars which apart from the more train focused loads were no better than this train. The red cargo train from 2011 had a much worse hopper car, frankly this years version is far superior, and I'm also thankful it comes in a non-primary colour.

True, but the battery box IS the side of the engine. I believe that is the only red battery box that Lego has produced.

Given the livery of the new locomotive I don't think there would be an issue incorporating the current battery box into the design.

I do think this Locomotive is a bit better designed than the 7939 because it doesn't have a huge hole in the top to see the wires and everything else inside also the top is more symmetrical. I do like it though for some odd reason, The train cars are kind of a unique variety I hope the hopper car comes with some sort of loading and unloading station.

They also did the old style 9v box in red too...

The power button gives away the location of the battery, but looking at the gray side, there are no seams. Looking closer, it seems to be a dark blay 6x16 tile with studs that are then covered with red tiles, like is used on the blue freight train. So that minifig is held in by the railing.

That's what I thought looking at side and how it meets up with the cabs.

I agree with you as I was thinking the same last night!

I believe you are correct. It appears that part of the 1x2 grille tiles on the floor is covered by the dark bley.

I'm not a huge fan of Norh American based locomotives/trains, but from my point of view set 60052 was way more refrishing than this one. Besides the BNSF loco 10 years ago and the maersk train last year LEGO has never produced a widely available, powered American styled diesel.

The cattle wagon sure is a bit basic, but at least it was something completely new for LEGO. To bad LEGO did not see this as a chance to produce a simple city traktor or small farm, oh well.

The other 2 cars are indeed plain flat beds, but the load/cargo is a great add-on for the whole LEGO city, now we just have an other helicopter, whoohoo...

In terms of the last few years of PF cargo trains, I'd rate them from most favorite to least in the following order:

#1: 7939

#2: 60052

#3: 3677

#4: 60098

Anyone else the same?

I'd agree.

So I ran the photos past my five year old:

- "want want want want"

- "engine is red + grey. If it was just red it would be boring. The grey makes it really interesting, along with the roof, which is interesting round shapes like play-doh."

- "digger is good"

- "coal wagon is good"

I asked him how many helicopters we had (at least 5 small ones so far, maybe more), and if we had enough:

- "we have quite a few, but this one is white, which is kind of interesting, we should get it"

Was really hoping he'd slate the chopper, I've seen quite enough of them.

Couldn't get a comment out of him on the crane.

Target market much?
