The party continues through the door and ascends a spiral staircase, bringing them higher up in the tower.

The door seemed firmly locked, flanked on either side by tall bookcases. An odd green device sits in the room, glimmering slightly...

The odd bulb seems far more powerful and volatile than the rest of the Citadel's machinery so far... tampering with it without knowing its purpose may be a bad idea...

Johon explores the bookshelves and proceeds to inspect the glowing device with his magniscope.

The glowing device does not respond to the magniscope, but Johon does unearth two books in The Regret's handwiritng:

"The Basic Principles of Time Travel"

"The Basic Principles of The Lifespark"

"What's the worse it could do?" says Boomingham, poking the big green portion of the device with Scupperer.

Boomingham's sword vanishes into thin air before stuttering back into existence... What was this thing?

Karie tugs Masson's sleeve.

"I dropped something in the room with Johon's painting! Can... um... we go back and get it?"

Z5wDC5Z.png

"...Lead the way."

Masson begins to backtrack a room.

"We'll be back shortly... As long as Karie is like this, I think she'd go mad if I wasn't in the same room as her."

With that, he and Karie return to Seerus's studio.

"So, what'd you drop...?"

OoC: I was using the magniscope to check for traps or anything of the sort, not for the soul glass

"Is it just me, or is the Regret's plan to try and change history? And if that's the case, he must have doubts about fighting us, or at least he world..."

"I get the feeling that he has been able to travel forward or backward in time, how, I'm not too sure, but he definitely knows something we don't. Perhaps he has seen forward to when we demolish his pitiful skeleton, and banish him from this world? Not really sure what to expect, but I think he has doubts to his own abilities in this situation. Either way, we need to destroy him, and soon. As for this green mechanical object, perhaps we can find a book about it?"

"The more of this placewe unravel, the less of it I understand... Why is he having us try to turn on each other? Why aren't they just calling in a horde of Oculoids and killing us? Why to love potion? I don't get it, at all..."

"Maybe we should *wheeze* give those books a read.

Speaking of love potions, I hope those two find their... whatever they dropped... soon. We can't *cough* be running around The Regret's castle ill-equipped."

Mortimer cracks open the first book... Which appeared to have been written ten years ago, judging by the date.

Basic Principles of The Lifespark

Foreword

This is my method of compiling all known facts about the Lifespark.

What It Is

Although myth states that the Lifespark is from the collective power of the gods, we cannot prove its origin. What we do know for a fact it appears to be a large collection of souls - however, unlike most souls, these do not have any particular identity attached to them. it's "raw", so to speak, and these souls exist inside the inferno in an incredibly high density.

Power

Souls are an incredibly powerful resource - the obvious piece of evidence is to simply ask any demon what they crave most. Utilizing the Lifespark could produce amazinglw powerful results.

Harnessing the Lifespark

It would take an incredibly powerful ether user well versed in all aspects of magic to be able to temper a single spark. Indeed, to even interact with it via magic requires a constant mental fortitude and strength - breaking concentration at the wrong time could be disastrous. Doubly so for speicfic cases where begins have managed to contain the power of the Lifespark.

The Lifespark's Response to Inanimate Objects

The Lifespark appears to be able to ensoul inanimate objects, and give them life. An example would be tossing in a boulder, and creating a golem - or, in my personal case, a vial of ink to create Oculoids. One ember of the Lifespark holds potential for hundreds of Oculoids. At this time, the effects of throwing a live and abiotic object into the Lifespark at once is unknown...

The Lifespark's Response to Living Creatures

Touching the Lifespark for the grand majority of all living organisms would lead to instant obliteration. The soul of the victim would be quickly torched, wiped away, and swept into the Lifespark... This is due to the Lifespark being comprised primarily of souls. The most apt analogy is filling up a glass of water too much, and allowing it to spill, or so my slavemasters told me. Due to my status as being only half ensouled, I have proven able to contain three embers of the Lifespark. To devour the entire Lifespark under purely normal circumstances is impossible, however. One argument for it is the only way to be able to not have your body, soul, and conscious overwhelmed is if you didn't have one - if you simply did not exist.

"Hmm. I wonder if his research has *wheeze* progressed?"

"See if it mentions this bad boy," says Boomingham, pointing towards the green thing. "I like books, but I'm not sure that the Regret is the sort of author I'd enjoy. I prefer the Comedies of Molter, or the History of the Plantagenet Family. I knew one of King Boris' grandchildren, you know- fellow general in the war. Had Boris' fabled bad breath, and the crazy eyes, but that boy could not command like Boris was said to."

"I've never been a fan of reading," Mortimer mutters, glancing at the curious green object as he scans the pages of the tome. "Stories have always been better when passed by mouth."

Jeaux takes a closer look at the door's lock

The door was firmly locked from both ends, requiring an incredibly specific key.

The Basic Principles of Time Travel

Limitations

Seeing as time travel is fairly self explanatory, it is far more important to discuss limitations. The limitations of time travelling is directly proportional to the amount of time you're travbelling, forward or backward. Anything equal to or below five hundred years is fairly simple, but increasing the time can lead to physical or mental disasters. Every one hundred years can lead to exponentially more difficult time travelling backwards: symptoms can be mental degradation, disfiguration, amputation, amnesia, and death.

Means

Time travel typically requires an anchor, a spellcaster, and subject, although these three components are consolidated. An example of this would be the chronobulbs installed in the Citadel towers. In case structural faults in the tower make themselves evident, transportation back five hundred years (the time is quite fixed) is easy. Simply pull down four of the eight levers and strike the bulb to switch time periods - I even have time bowing before me now. A limitation would be the fixed raidus of the bulb, but unfortunately I do not know how to surmount that issue... Right now. Fortunately, my more standard methods of throwing someone backwards or forwards do not have such a stifling limitation.

qi64g.png

"I feel as if we have *wheeze* all of the parts of The Regret's arsenal now, but... But I still don't understand how he plans to jam them together."

u7CBkvs.png

"I wonder if there was a time we could reach with those bulbs where this door wasn't built...?"

Mortimer finds the last discernable novel in the set, the second volume on the subject of time travel, this one shorter than the last.

Overcoming Limitations

Harm can only befall a time traveller when they lose their concentration - or, in other words, they don't have enough mental fortitude. The amount of resolution required for a jump forwards or backwards is also tied to the amount of time travelled. In other words, one hundred years is a simple leap for even a simple minded person, while two thousand years requires the someone who has the mental fortitude from being dragged through hell itself. Time travel itself if not done via machine or if other large spans is highly dangerous.

Mortimer remains silent for a moment before turning to his small friend. "I don't know, Punii. I don't know what her objective was. I don't know what happened." He hazards a small glance at Johon. "I don't know if it was her failure to begin with."

EDIT

"Look, she would have been in a break-down. At least she is functional. Blame me, but there was no right choice. The Regret wants to tear us apart."

Johon, still lingering by the door, decides to go back, checking the couple wasn't followed or surrounded. "Should be back in a minute." Johon says, exitting the room.

Mortimer shakes his head, grimacing. "You call that functional? She's--"

Cutting himself off with a sigh, he starts to search the place, looking for anything noteworthy. "I'm not blaming you. I've no idea what your options were. At least we're all alive," he adds, glancing momentarily at Alice from the corner of his eye.

"Functional is *wheeze* deabatable, Johon. What made you think about the Love Potion, anyway?"
