ummester Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Here is an X Wing, from the OT before Lucas CG enhanced it - ie the original ILM model. None of the LEGO sets are accurate to it, by colour or shape. None, including the UCS sets, have gotten the nose right. It's fine for people to prefer what they want and like what appeals to them aesthetically - though I just think that the actual design being discussed is important to a conversation. Quote
BrickG Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I wouldn't limit the Lego charm to blocky builds. All I want is the most accurate representation they can make. Blocky usually isn't the most accurate looking on. Or it just looks a bit more... childish? Dunno how to describe it. The early blocky AT-STs are really ugly IMO (not sure I actually like ANY of the offical AT-STs that are minifigure scale). Quote

The early blocky AT-STs are really ugly IMO (not sure I actually like ANY of the offical AT-STs that are minifigure scale). I guess it's really a matter of taste. If I could only pick one, I'd probably go with the very first AT-ST(granted, it's not the most aesthetically pleasing, but I really like the tricks they used to build it, some of which were quite advanced for LEGO products back then). It seems, that the end of the day, it's a choice of what you personally prefer. Do you prefer nostalgia, or your models being as seamlessly similar to the onscreen film models as possible? Do you think that official sets should be left together, or do you feel free to take them apart/modify them? And the answer? It's LEGO. All of those are good choices. Every* choice is awesome**. I think that sums this conversation up. *Unless you're choosing to use M*g*bl*cks. **I would have had a direct LEGO Movie quote here, except I still need to see it. Quote
nokialover31 Posted August 17, 2014 Author Posted August 17, 2014 This topic is about X-wing 7140, not AT-ST Quote
irispen Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Not sure if the OP is trolling or not, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume he's young and just isn't fluent in English. Many people, such as myself, prefer the undeniably superior build and detail of the newer versions. You like the 7140? Go nuts, you can still buy it, and other people shouldn't diminish your enthusiasm for the original. That said, I find your attitude rather rude, insinuating others are 'children' for appreciating something different from yourself. You want to make your perfect 'original' rebel hangar? No one is stopping you, but stop attempting to frame alternative opinions as 'wrong' ones. He's a kid Quote
Ultron Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 It's gray! I think it's been discussed that they're white but are gray from battle damage and wear. Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I think it's been discussed that they're white but are gray from battle damage and wear. So maybe the original, being gray, is post-Battle of Yavin, and the white ones are from the Incom theft? That would actually make sense. Quote
Lord-Vorahk Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Yeah, they're probably painted white when factory-new. Quote

kongman Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 My preferred x-wing is 7140, because it's the first. I like it more then all the others x-wing made later by LEGO. I think all the others x-wing are just copy of first. It gives me the sense of 'original trilogy' that i search in lego star wars sets. Does anyone feel like me about this? http://www.bricklink...em.asp?S=7140-1 im sorry to say but this one is not the best , the latest ucs red 5 is the best x wing by far Even though I have grey hairs: both. There was a time the very first versions were sold in every toystore...... Also, there will be a time The Ghost (the Rebels ship) won't be available anymore in stores and at Lego.com. According to your logic it doesn't make any sense to collect it now (it can be found on Lego.com and in a toystore)......but it does make sense to collect it when it's not to be found in stores???? im 44 but i cant make the right x wing noises when im playing with it. Jdurg Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 I have two X-Wings in my collection. One is set 9493 which was the first X-Wing I bought and is my "play scale" set. I love it and think it does a good job of representing the iconic ship. I guess I may be grateful in that I'm not such a stickler for details regarding Star Wars so small discrepancies don't bother me all that much. The other X-Wing I have, the one I picked up this weekend, is the UCS X-Wing (set 10240). It's a great set and it looks incredible sitting on the cabinet next to my work computer setup. I'm 34 and like a mixture of good display characteristics with nice play features. I do lean more towards the display characteristics of a set more than playability, however. Quote

TheBear Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 When you look at it in that lighting, if it didn't have the tan, then it would be the most screen-accurate ship there is, at least color-wise. The grey is far too dark, but even if that were true as soon as you mention the shape then people who prefer 7140 would say accuracy isn't important. Quote
Moon_Knight Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 (edited) I've found this topic very interesting and would have to say that I'm on the side with those that like the most recent design the most. I think the shape and design of the most recent X-Wing is the closest to screen-accuracy. I also like the dark red color that TLG used for 9493. Just by curiosity, which snowspeeder, excluding the UCS, do you like the most? I would have to say that I like 8089. I really hate the snowspeeders with the grey stripe on the front... GuyDudeMan27 Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 It's great that you have an opinion, but that doesn't mean that you have to shove it down everyone else's throats. Opinions can't be wrong, so proclaiming that the very first, 10+ year old version is best and shunning the other versions isn't the best course of action. Really what this topic boils down to is that everyone likes different things. Some people like certain era's of lego, and some jump on the newest ones. (Personally, 2006 and 2007 lego melts my heart) I think many can agree that TLG's X-Wings may never be perfect, but any improvements are good. I would love to see it in really light grey, but that probably will never happen. Quote
nokialover31 Posted August 19, 2014 Author Posted August 19, 2014 I'm doing a rebel hangar with an X-wing and Y-wing (both the first version)!! Quote
TheBear Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 The first X-Wing has some charm and I can understand why some people might like it for nostalgic reasons even though I don't (since I'm too old to have had it as a child). But the same can't be said for the Y-Wing, it just looks awful. The struts that link the body to the engines should be straight, not slope upwards like the Starship Enterprise! And the blockiness at the front just looks horrific! How anyone could prefer the first Y-Wing is beyond me. Quote
nokialover31 Posted August 19, 2014 Author Posted August 19, 2014 OK, but i'm doing an Original Trilogy rebel's hangar... I would like to put also original A-wing, but I don't have too much space... it's not a huge hangar... but I'm sure I want 7140, not later version of X-wing Quote
