Dooftastic Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Now you have become a wiser man (?) than yesterday , I personally like the latest one better but I do like the old blocky and sturdy feeling of ancient times, but those times are long gone. Speaking of sturdy, 7140 has a horrible tendency to come apart very easily. The rear of the engines and the lasers on the wings popped off all the time on my 7140. A problem solved in later iterations. Quote

Maybe but it was fun to crash then I would do a battle in the wreckage of the X-wing. They were just bricks being separated. Now on the new set if a wings comes out it means the technic frame broke. I cant crash land my 75021 Republic gunship because I fear the wing will rip off and destroy the technic piece inside. The new sets are swooshable but they are not crashable No more epic battle with broken ships all over the floor and pilots escaping imperial patrol. And it was always fun to rebuild those destroyed ships. Quote
AudiBobaR5-D2 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 The more I look at 7140, the more of a nostalgia feel of early Star Wars sets from Lego in the very early years of LSW as a whole. In my opinion though 4502/6212 is more accurate compared to 7140, especially with the mixture of grey and white parts to make up the overall ship from the Original Trilogy of SW. But that blockiness of the early sets might not be accurate, but certainly adds a bit more playability and swooshable features of testing the X-Wing 7140's structure as an example, when in a scenario if one likes to pretend to be chased by 7146 Tie Fighter. Navy Trooper Fenson Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 My preferred x-wing is 7140, because it's the first. I like it more then all the others x-wing made later by LEGO. I think all the others x-wing are just copy of first. It gives me the sense of 'original trilogy' that i search in lego star wars sets.Does anyone feel like me about this? Completely indifferent actually but I share your opinion on the first X-Wing in particular as the 2004-2012 versions with their giant size and weird colorscheme are just too off from the movie likeness for me, I had a different opinion during my childhood though which meant I actually bought all 3 white X-Wings but never owned the original grey one. in the end though my personal perfect X-Wing would be a MOC made with many of the same parts as the original X-Wing but I would still like to have the original X-Wing just because it´s one of the few original SW sets that still work unlike pretty much everything else from the era like the Slave One, MTT, Sith Infiltrator and Pod Racers. No sorry! I think the "best" version is the 2012 X-Wing! Looks very original and the technique, details and colour are really good - but i must also say i`m not a big fan from the original Lego X-Wing Sets! markus The new one has a good technique put into it, especially how far they improved the wing function so they snap open in an instant instead of taking ages until you finally turned the gear 3 or 4 times. At first I was enthusiastic about the 2012 X-Wing but after some time I just got annoyed by the many differently colored bits like the tan cheese, the red/dark red used randomly throughout when it should be uniform and the occasional grey blobs in the design. It would still work well as a model of the Battlefront games but not the movies. Collectors collect first versions. Children play new versions. they don't care. What are we? Collectors or children?? I would say a true collector gets everything that has the brands name on the box but that inevitably means you have to buy a ton of stuff that you don´t actually like or is ridiculously priced like polybags in Germany so it was always a stupid practice that nobody should really care for unless they have too much money to burn. There is really no argument in favour of the old sets when Lego does improve all the time. Even in the few years since my dark ages I saw notable improvements. And I am really glad I missed these old Star Wars sets when I see pics like these. Yes, I myself am disappointed how pretty much everything from my original collection is so subpar and I never had enough of an emotional connection that I actually want to keep old Star Wars stuff unless it was accurate enough. I started in 99 (only with PT sets, started with OT two years later) and the only things that aren´t sold or parted out from my first few years is one Ben Kenobi, R2-D2, Naboo guard and Padmé, none of the models. But Legos constant updates suck out some of the fun after a while with only small actual changes between iterations, many models getting worse through Lego making the set smaller or bigger (Flash Speeder and AAT) and many figures just losing the touch. The new Tusken Raider and Vader are basically indistinguishable from minifigures that someone stuck action figure heads onto. More detail is good but Lego is starting to overdo it. I'm not speaking about film-like-accuracy, I'm speaking about LEGO original trilogy 'feeling'. Lego ships are not meant to be exact models from the film, they have their LEGO taste inside, and this was progressively lost until the UCS, that are more exact models than LEGO constructions. From this extreme comparison between first X-wing and UCS one, you can see clearly how much the original LEGO feeling was lost, with all the shades between them. There was also an UCS version of the X-Wing made only a year after the original grey minifig one. Did Lego really use so much touch in set design? Ultimately, I think you have to remember that we're not the primary target audience, that TLG targets these sets towards kids first, and that if you go out and ask kids (and any casual Star Wars fan parents) what color an X-wing is, most of them are probably going to answer, 'white.' Mostly because all the toy designers falsely make the X-Wings plain white instead of light grey and because those toys are more visible, around every corner, used in all the marketing etc. more than people watch the actual movies so this false image continues to get into the collective consciousness. So maybe the original, being gray, is post-Battle of Yavin, and the white ones are from the Incom theft? That would actually make sense. If Lego made a model based on this picture it would have to be tan like the original AAT. Ugh, at this point Lego could just make an entirely new color with the X-Wing in mind and use it also for bits and pieces in other sets. In their current state it surely wouldn´t be possible for them to lose money because of that. This thread is just...I'm trying to find a better word than ridiculous but I can't. Actual discussion I would call it. Yeah, that is also something I despise about the new sets. Everything needs a giant technic frame nowadays. I just wanted to mod my 2013 LAAT/I a little and there was a section around the wings that was so intricate and tightly constructed that I had to search for the instructions just to put the model apart. I It´s nice for collectors models that one wouldn´t want to damage or play with but not even being able to crash your Lego model? It´s not like rebuilding takes ages, it´s Lego not Hasbro or a glue and paint model kit, nobody expects it to be indestructible. Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Am I the only one who doesn't think the Biggs minifig is that special? The helmet is really the only unique part, and it goes for less then £2 on Bricklink. The head is just a generic printing, for which there's probably an adequate flesh-toned substitute on another set out there. If I may be forgiven for going on a tangent, actually, just where is there a good fleshtoned substitution head for Biggs? I'd like to have an "updated" Biggs using his 7140 / 7142 helmet, a later (current) X-Wing pilot torso and legs, and an appropriate head, but I can't quite find one of that last item that looks quite right - the closest heads available all seem to have too great a difference in the pattern and/or color of the facial hair, look too old, or have some other issue that keeps them from working well as Luke's old buddy from Tatooine. But I'm not able to keep up with every face print out there; perhaps there are some good candidates I've missed. Anyone know of any? Quote
YellowCorvette Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) Why not both? I like 7140 and 9493 at the same time. I like 7140 because of the clean look and the blockiness on it looks really "Lego-ish" to me, but at the same time I also like 9493 because of the build and the design of the model. Yes nokialover31, you free to make your opinion at here, but your acting in this topic like posting your purchase and showing the EBay website is very ridiculous in my opinion. easytiger Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I reckon about the only X-wing that really comes close to the original design especially around the cockpit is 7191 Ultimate Collector series from around 1999/2000.... Quote
Final Exit Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I didn't realise how bad the minifig scale X-Wings look Quote

Lyichir Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I couldn't disagree with the original post more. I was a fan of Lego Star Wars when it first started out. I had the original X-Wing, and loved it. And you know what? I'd trade it for one of the more modern X-Wings in a heartbeat. The original X-Wing sucked—everything about it was the wrong shape, the wings did not unfold realistically, the late '90s parts it had to work with were extremely limiting, the colors were bland and gross... I can't think of a single aspect of the original that was in any way better than the latest original trilogy X-Wing to have been released. To be honest, I'd say the same for a lot of the early Star Wars sets I had. The late '90s and early '00s were a terrible time for set design, whereas today's sets are much better in terms of quality, playability, accuracy, etc. If I ever get my old collection to a state where I can reassemble those old sets, I wouldn't hesitate to sell many of them off to help fund my way toward more modern Star Wars sets. darththeling Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 (edited) Collectors collect first versions. Children play new versions. they don't care. What are we? Collectors or children?? Interesting discussions. Although I certainly don't find this insulting as other have indicated, I just don't subscribe to the idea that the newest build is always an improvement. I have a few citations just off the top of my head: The AAT. Last year's model is a travesty of "too much chibi" style drift. 8018 was gigantic and I didn''t dig the blue CIS scheme. 7155-1 is the only model that looks screen accurate, colors and all. 6210 Jabba's Sail Barge is a good model, no it doesn't have a removable top (I modded mine rather easily to do so) like 75020. Bricklinking Ree Yees and Max Rebo was an excellent investment compared to junking 6210. TIE fighters. 9492 was a step in the wrong direction, in my opinion. They should be light and nimble, all the extraneous pieces drain wallets needlessly. And what's up with that huge x1 stripe going around the wings? I have to custom all my OT TIEs moving forward because those just don't look right to me. nokialover31, I do get you, though, I suppose there is an inherent 'beauty' in the first time TLG produces a vehicle or location. The entire first wave certainly has a jive to it (although I can't imagine displaying the Gungan Sub or Sith Infiltrator). The blue highlights in the first of every TIE is puzzling. But yeah, collectors items for sure. Edited September 18, 2015 by darththeling Quote
Lego Fett Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 In my opinion, most people who say "Darth Vader's new helmet is bad" or "Tye new millenium falcon is bad" are just very nostalgie biased. That is not necessarily a good thing, because hating on new sets because they are improved from the last ones is not right. Quote
