Posted August 15, 201410 yr I've been trying to make sure I always have at least one set to build... I don't know why- I guess so that if I ever got really bored or something I'd know there was something I could do. Am I crazy? Anyone else try to stick to this system? Right now I'm happy because I have a backlog of 3 sets (2 large technic sets and the ghostbusters car) with another big technic on order for next week. I try to do one set a weekend or so, so this will see me through to September hopefully.
August 15, 201410 yr I have now got 68 sets, most of which are Technic. Of those 46 are still to be built. I've not set out to have this amount unbuilt (who would?) I'm just a very slow builder who takes on other projects which seen to take longer than anticipated. Edited August 15, 201410 yr by grum64
August 15, 201410 yr I always try to, but I have a competitive nature which makes me want to complete all of my sets ASAP, leaving me with no sets to build.
August 16, 201410 yr I don't buy sets for display. I often don't even build the sets I buy. I just buy sets for parts. I've never understood why so many people buy sets just to have them. Some sets are cool enough to warrant keeping together for a long time for decoration and whatnot, but I've seen a lot of people fill their basements and spare bedrooms with tons and tons of sets without ever building any MOCs. It seems to me that just takes all of the fun out of it. And that's probably why people buy so many sets. Once the set is put together, it's not fun anymore, so they move onto another set.
August 16, 201410 yr Not intentionally. I buy sets I like and then don't get around to building them because I am too busy working on MOCs. Maybe I'll catch up with the backlog when I retire some day.
August 16, 201410 yr I always try to, but I have a competitive nature which makes me want to complete all of my sets ASAP, leaving me with no sets to build. Right? I'm usually super stoked for the set(s) I've just bought and have to build them. Right now. Hahaha. I'm full jealous of people who can restrain themselves, and have these mysterious unopened sets in thier homes. :p
August 16, 201410 yr At the moment, I think I have about three dozen sets in my "emergency" cache ranging from a few smaller things in the 25-50 USD range to higher end stuff like the Death Star play-set, Ewok Village, Technic flagship models and a few spare modular buildings. I used to just keep a few kits on hand (something to cheer me up or distract me after a bad day) but I kinda went way over the top the first year I got invited to the special, invite only pre-Black Friday VIP sale. Between not having a lot of spare time for the hobby and buying a couple thousand dollars worth of Lego in one day on an annual basis, you start to build up a bit of a backlog. I keep telling myself that I don't need to buy new stuff until I've opened some of the kits I've already got, but them TLG goes and rolls out new item like Benny Spaceship, or the Mini Cooper, or the Exo-suit, etc. and I just keep falling further behind. In the very near future I'll be picking up an UCS Tumbler and I'm already trying to figure out how I'll explain to my wife that despite an attic full of unopened inventory, I needed to rush out and get another kit I might not get around to building until 2017. [i do not have a problem, I can quit any time I want to, I just don't want to… ]

August 16, 201410 yr I normally build sets as I get them, I do normally have a MOC in progress to work on ;)
August 16, 201410 yr I too get a comfort in knowing that I have some new, interesting sets waiting to be built in the future. I keep them near me in my office, so I frequently look at them for a warm and fuzzy feeling of what is yet to come. I prefer having a variety of sets of different sizes "in stock", and don't feel quite as pleased when I don't. It's a nice security knowing that even if LEGO pulls a bad year with nothing that interests me, I'll still have *something* new to build. I don't know what they call it- OCD or something- but I have to build a set as it was intended, even if only for an hour, before harvesting it for parts. Same here, everything gets built at least once - even sets bought solely because of some interesting bricks.
August 16, 201410 yr No. But still, I have more sets sitting around waiting to be built than built sets on my shelves (counting modern sets only). Didn't feel like tackling a big build (nearly all those sets are modulars or modularsized) during the summer time, since it easily takes me 3-4 days (I like to savor the building process and take my sweet time) to build a 2000+ piece set. Somehoew, doing that feels more at home in the ugly seasons, when it's cold and uncomfortable outside.
August 16, 201410 yr Would be nice but it's just not in the budget. I have a lego hobby, a clone brand brick hobby(the big 3 brands, MB, ionix, and kreo), an occasional book buy hobby (mostly been second hand store buys lately), and a video game hobby. I do have 4 small sets on the side but those are more of an "i'm not ready to open them" position then a stockpile on purpose. I have 2 5 buck creator sets, a small lego skate set that i got via a trade, and a series 1 planet i won in a youtube giveaway.
August 17, 201410 yr Typically when I buy a set I build it immediately when arriving home or the next day. Then right after I store it, display it or add it to a MOC!
August 17, 201410 yr I try not to have a backlog at all now. I try to run on minimal spare parts, also. More and more I am leaning to LDD because it is neater and only want to gather parts once I have a design I'm sure I want to display.
August 17, 201410 yr I once had 3 sets on my backlog! So yeah, I do find it impossible to not open them.
August 17, 201410 yr I have couple of sets to build. I bought 8437 (was looking for used ones), which has good looks and I really wanted it. Upon receive I found the box is opened, but all the bags and trays inside are sealed! I just cannot break the seals, that box with couple of parts on display is awesome, so much nostalgia.
August 18, 201410 yr I don't buy sets for display. I often don't even build the sets I buy. I just buy sets for parts. I've never understood why so many people buy sets just to have them. I don't know what they call it- OCD or something- but I have to build a set as it was intended, even if only for an hour, before harvesting it for parts. I guess that's what I have, then... OCD. If I want a set for parts, I generally need to buy two so that I can build one the "right" way (not really - I often mod and expand sets), and then I might be able to bring myself to use the second one for parts. There's only been very few sets that I bought for pieces... it's VERY rare. I got the Toy Story "army men" set so that I could make a LEGO army men (replaced the head and hands with yellow), and I got some Prince of Persia sets on clearance because I like the Ostriches. At the same time, I probably have a collection of around 100k bricks NOT gotten in sets that I use for building things. I buy tons of stuff from bricklink and at the PAB wall (even that might be OCD, as I may not even have a MOC in mind, but if they have something my brain tells me are "good" bricks, I'll get a cup or two). I have a huge amount of bricks to just build with any time I want. So yes... I actually have over 100 sets that I have not built, but could not pass up. I got bit long enough ago to know what I would have to pay in the future to have these sets... A lot of big ones, like the 10210 Imperial Flagship... such a beautiful ship, but so big... I simply don't have the space right now to display it. If I'd missed it, I'd be paying over $500 on BL for one. I think the oldest is my 4505 Millennium Falcon, still in the box. I couldn't pass it up as a Black Friday sale. There are themes I like... I have at least 15 Star Wars sets, new and old; several architecture sets (I stopped trying to be a completest with architecture when they started releasing $100+ sets); a lot of castle, trains, city and creator sets that will go in my some-day city layout. Occasionally my daughter wants to build something with me... usually a larger set to do a "Family Build," and I'll pack up something that I had on display to make room for it... one time she picked Cafe Corner. Just out of curiosity, I looked it up and it was selling for over $900 (at the time... more now) for new-in-box sets. I shrugged, opened it up, and we built it (I believe that's how I got my title... because I intend to build them all, I didn't buy it to sell it). Edited August 18, 201410 yr by fred67
August 18, 201410 yr Yes. Always. I deliberately plan it in such a way that during my downtime (no work-in-progress MOC,and not inspired to start any) , I have sets on a weekly basis to keep me occupied, unless its a tiny set.. or a Creator set.. which I hastity build , then move on the other 2 alternate models in matter of days. And of course... when something spark me up for a new MOC... I'm occupied for weeks on end, further adding to the backlog.
August 18, 201410 yr I do have a backlog of set's to build.. It try to keep it around not more than 40 - 50 sets , Some set's i debox as soon as I get them even , to save space and to make sure i dont have to cry when opening a MISB set a few years later when it has gone up in price on Bricklink . Its nice to be able to go and fetch a few sets from the stash when i have fellow Lego friends over and build. Sometimes a hoard sets and let them sit o the shelf for a while like a wine maturing
August 18, 201410 yr OCD - Obsessive compulsive disorder. Or something similar to that. I tend to build sets once I purchase them, occasionally I MOD sets, particuarly ones in which spaces have been left blank for no reason.
August 18, 201410 yr Author I also try to find places for as many left over pieces as possible once I finished building. As much as I loved Ecto-1 there wasn't a single piece I had two duplicates of- it really annoyed me I couldn't find any good places for any of the extra pieces.
August 18, 201410 yr I have extra stock of ninja go, Chima and city sets from when I have bought too much on clearance for my son's birthday or Christmas. For myself, just the cantina, x men jet, exo suit, and superman space ship.... But I might inherit my son's tmnt van if he sees something he likes more.
August 18, 201410 yr I always try to, but I have a competitive nature which makes me want to complete all of my sets ASAP, leaving me with no sets to build. This happens to me too. It happens all the time...
