mccoyed Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 (edited) One day, Alva Tyrnsdottir would be taught to fight by her father. One day, she'll be scarred and hardened with one foot already in the Hall of the Gods. One day, she'll look back and remember this moment and know it was the beginning. It all started a snowy night when she pried her father's axe loose from the painted target on the wind-bent tree. When she tested its weight and found it good. When she threw it, end over end, and struck true. Edited August 16, 2014 by mccoyed Quote
TheUtilityBelt Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Great tree! I wonder where this story will go... Quote
Yzalirk Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Nice little MOC, I'm just not liking the yellow grill there though. Quote
-Carson Haupt- Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I like it! The target looks very sliced up! Quote
Gunman Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Awesome entry dude... I really like using throwing axe! Quote
Scaevola Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Great tree, the trunk looks very natural. Also, nice usage of the great to show the sliced section of the tree Quote
MKJoshA Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I really like the angle of your tree. Good phase I ! Quote
mccoyed Posted August 16, 2014 Author Posted August 16, 2014 Great tree! I wonder where this story will go... Thanks! You'll see! Alva will be the main subject of my Archery and the rest of my Barracks builds. Nice little MOC, I'm just not liking the yellow grill there though. It's a target, Bee. Made of straw, I would imagine. I like it! The target looks very sliced up! Haha. They tend to reuse things a lot in the Arnarhvall area. But I have yet to find a better piece to use in tandem with the modular axehead in this way, that's why it has featured in 3 of my AoM builds. Awesome entry dude... I really like using throwing axe! Thanks Gun. I had this idea way back when I first joined and I was afraid someone else would go for it. Great tree, the trunk looks very natural. Also, nice usage of the great to show the sliced section of the tree Cesbrick was a very large inspiration here. His build had some of the best Lego trees I've ever seen. But the sliced section of the tree was actually a beaten up painted target. I usually use the medium tan grills for actual wood. Great idea with the axe! Thanks LV. I really like the angle of your tree. Good phase I ! Thanks! I like the idea of it being sort of Alva's special tree as other trees in the area are the tall, thick, majestic Douglas Fir types or something. Quote
soccerkid6 Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Excellent tree and I l like the little snowy base a lot Good to see someone doing a ranged weapon other than a bow for the archery phases Quote
mrcp6d Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Ah, excellent! Axe throwing makes so much sense for Mitgardians. Looking forward to future phases! Quote
Maxim I Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Indeed a very nice tree!! I am already looking forward to phase 2 :) Quote
Gideon Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Throwing axes...how Mitgardian! Nice tree btw Quote

Hammerhand Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Great little build mccoyed! I didn't know that lego made light grey and white tree pieces. They look sweet! Quote
Yzalirk Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Better watch out, Kaliphlin. :p Mitgardia will have something to look out for in the new future... I'll be ordering lots of good things most likely tomorrow Quote
nivremis Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Great little build mccoyed! I didn't know that lego made light grey and white tree pieces. They look sweet! They don't, I'd think those were from altbricks. Quote
mccoyed Posted August 24, 2014 Author Posted August 24, 2014 Great little build mccoyed! I didn't know that lego made light grey and white tree pieces. They look sweet! Nivremis is correct, it's from altbricks. They make a stiffer leaf product in many colors, including a trans blue. The trans blue is for wintery icy trees, I guess, but doesn't look right. :P Quote
ElCrab Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Nice tree! And while I agree on the use of a yellow grill (as a target as you say), it gives me a grand idea for a MOC that's been evolving in my brain. Not to harp on the issue too much, but I also thought it was a clever way to make it appear an axe is embedded and previous throws have exposed the wood underneath the bark. As you said, it's a target, but I never would've guessed that. It's good on you for having a better imagination than I did. Either way, again, love the tree and the effect of an embedded axe. Nice little scene. Quote
mccoyed Posted August 24, 2014 Author Posted August 24, 2014 Thanks. I've been doing grills as a way to embed axes for a bit now, right back to my first GoH build. Recently I've used white for snow and I've done brown and tan to do more of an "embedded in wood" thing. See my Stables Phase 2 and Barracks Phase 1 and Archery Phase 2-3 for examples! I'd love to see this technique used as I think it'll also work for swords and the like though I haven't tried that yet. Quote
IenjoyLego89 Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 A very interesting twist on the archer challenge. I really like it, simple and yet very well done :) Quote
mccoyed Posted August 24, 2014 Author Posted August 24, 2014 Thanks! Be sure to check out the next two phases if you like this one! Quote
