kabel Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Conflict in Mitgardia - Prelude: It was late August in Mitgardia and high in the Demon's Ridge mountains close to the Avalonian border, this meant that winter was coming soon. Last night a first snow had fallen and a few white patches were glistening in the morning light. Thorgard was in a bitter mood. It was not the coming cold itself that was wrecking his nerves, as winter was every Mitgardian dwarf’s middle name. It was the snow that would make living and working up here impossible, for snow meant that they would be cut of from their supplier in Valholl. And just as they were so close to finally hit the motherload, they had be hoping to reach all summer long, the mechanics of the water wheel driven pump had broken down again, making it unsafe to dig deeper into the mountain. “Hey Edralf, you finally getting along with that wheel there?” grumbled Thorgard at his brother who functioned as their team’s mechanic. But as usual Edralf kept quite and continued his work. “Damn Edralf, it’s always the same crap with you and your constructions. You’re mighty boastful when it comes to putting this stuff together, but whenever we need it for real, it quits working” continued Thorgard his lamentations. Edralf felt that his younger brother had no right to criticise his skills. Thorgard was the one who had found this fantastic place alright, but whithout his skills as a blacksmith and mechanic they wouldn't be getting anywhere. Edralf was in the mood to take his hammer and slam it into his brother's stupid face, and just as he was about to finally say something, the cutting “Oouuhh Oouuh” of a dwarven messenger wolf interrupted their little conversation. The brothers looked up at the narrow path that was leading across the mountains to their secret mine and were shocked to see the captain of their local militia riding one of those rare wolves. And both felt immediately guilty. Yes, they were too close to the Avalonian border. The Mitgardian authorities had banned prospecting in these parts of the mountains, for you never knew how the Avalonian elves would react to Mitgardian dwarves getting so close to their territory. But Thorgard hadn’t been able to resist. All the signs his skilled geologist eyes had seen were hinting at a huge gold deposit, so how could a dwarf not try to set up a mine at this location? “Thorgard and Edralf Johannson of the Splitting Axe Clan, the council orders you to immediately report to Amortug, the new dwarven capital, and answer the council’s questions.” Said the wolfrider when he came within shouting range and added: ”Do not commence your work and do not hesitate to follow these instructions. Any refusal would result in the expulsion from your clan. Do follow now!” Thorgard and Edralf were dumbstruck, how could anyone know about their secret mine. But they knew they had to follow these order because the expulsion from your clan could mean certain death in these days of war and horror. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Meanwhile at the lands of Amortug… “Adummim! Did you hear about the Johansson brothers?” “ Hazarmaveth, it’s good to see you too brother! So have you got another entertaining story for me? Let me guess. They caught fenrirs again and they have killed Raavage?” “No such stories this time, they were summoned by the council. They were mining too close to the border. “ “Why wasn’t I aware of this?” “Because you are on a scouting mission and you do know, if you’re not in Amortug to join the council decision making goes on without you. And it was my spies who followed the brothers and I informed the other council members. You do know what this means right?” “Yes, it means a conflict with Elon! Have you forgotten what he ordered Glorfindel to do with Omurtag, our brother city?” “Well I think it’s time to finally show Elon that he needs us more than we need him. And I’m also sick of those pointy eared girls who are keeping us from mining near the borders.” “You may be right… Well let’s see what the other council members have to say, I’ll catch up with you tomorrow in the citadel! First some more drow hunting!” The guards on the towers and walls in Amortug weren't aware of all those things going on. But somehow they all felt times were about to change. Their city wasn't harmed by Revolword, as they were stopped at Valholl. But now the Drow were close. Too close. And with snow falling already, they felt that this was going to be harsh winter. Cold, long and with a dangerous enemy ready to strike. "Did you see the snow this morning?" "Yes, it's too early." "Indeed, that's going to be a harsh winter. Come on, snow in august! Even for Mitgardia that's early in the season!" "Well it will slow down the drow, so that's nice." "I doubt it, their hatred warms them so much that they can handle cold as much as we can." "I hope you're wrong and besides they've never gotten close to the city..." In Amortug’s treasure chamber two Bersarvers were talking about what they heard at the council. “Do you think there’s gold in that mine?” “I have no idea, but I do think it’s a bad idea to mine there.” “Because of some pointy eared girls? Our city needs it! Look around, with this we can afford an enormous army.” “Since when do we need to buy men who fight for us. Just saying that makes you unworthy of your title.” “I’m just saying that other than our loyalty, gold unites our kind even more. You enjoy standing guard here as much as I do.” A silence followed. They kept on looking at all the treasure. Treasure, waiting to be used for things that could shake Mitgardia’s foundations…. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Quote

TheUtilityBelt Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I am sorry to say it my Kali brothers, but Mitgardia is so beautiful! Really great build by the way. Quote
mccoyed Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I am sorry to say it my Kali brothers, but Mitgardia is so beautiful! Really great build by the way. This is why all the dwarves are bald. They shave and wax their scalps so that they're reflecting Mitgardia's beauty around everywhere like (demi)human mirrors. Quote
Yzalirk Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Very nice build, it's beautiful. Maybe my sig-fig should have been a dwarf. Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Awesome stuff! Can't wait to see the continuation! Quote

Bregir Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 One wonders what this will lead to... Gief moar challenge III!! :P Quote
Ecclesiastes Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Amortug? What happened to Omurtag?! There are more large dwarven cities Quote

kabel Posted August 23, 2014 Author Posted August 23, 2014 The elemental war has destroyed some cities and shifted the balance of power between the remaining ones. Thorshaven, for example, was nothing more than a fishing hamlet before the war. Quote
Maxim I Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 This is really absolutely awesome Kabel!!! So many things to like in this!! :) Quote
soccerkid6 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Fantastic build, kabel. The composition is superb and the landscape is beautiful I've avoided using olive green/normal green in landscape before, but after seeing this I'll have to try it. The dwarven mine and waterwheel are sweet too Glad to see the dwarves included in the Mitgardian prologue Quote
