Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted June 15, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted June 15, 2007 (edited) Hello Bart, Welcome at Eurobricks! Building a first-rated ship of the line is something special. I'm looking forward to see pictures of your ship! You are at the right place for improving your English. My native language is Dutch. When I joined this board (1 year ago in 7 days), my English was also a bit underdeveloped :-D. Enjoy yourself here! B. Edited June 15, 2007 by bonaparte Quote

El Bucanero Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Hi there and welcome to the forum Bart! It's good to see another teenage member in here. I'm thirteen. Just like Bonaparte (I didn't know you were here for almost a year already!) my English wasn't that good. But I guess this site is good for your English because it improved mainly by this forum! Norrington Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Welcome Mr. Roberts. I think that your up-coming MOC sounds promising. BTW, you english is pretty good, considering some people I know say, for example "How many do you got?" 8-( Welcome all the same! Quote
SkaForHire Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Je suis Flamand. Mais je parle quelques mots de francais. Pas beaucoup... :-$ I should join a French forum to exercise my French :-D . I'm forgetting everything I learned in school because I don't use it. I am thinking about doing the same thing... my French is getting so bad. And if i want to get my PhD i need to be able to at least read it!!!! I wonder if there are any pirate discussion (non lego) French forums! haha. Quote
ZCerberus Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 By definition, a ship-of-the-line is a Man-of-War that has three decks with guns on them. How many guns do you require to qualify as a first rate Ship-of-the-line? I would think it would be more than 42! Anyhow, I look forward to seeing your creation! Quote
Asuka Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 Hello and welcome! *y* Message in a bottle-jokes on! :-D Quote

Captain Thorradan Ap Dugal Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 (edited) Welcome Mr. Roberts. Im thirteen like Mr.Tiber *sweet* my english is bad too, cause my english teacher is ... how to say it? ... idiot! X-D Edited June 18, 2007 by phred Quote
Bart_Roberts Posted June 16, 2007 Author Posted June 16, 2007 I heard that "ship-of-the-line" is an appellation, there is sloop of war called "ship-of-the-line", for exemple. The ships of the line are just ship using the "line strategy". But that's true, 42 guns is not enough to be a first rate... But I've not more cannons to put !! (I started with a clasic base of ship, with three parts in the middle.) Quote
Fordo Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 The ship-of-the-line design had settled on a few standard types: older two-deckers (i.e. with two complete decks of guns firing through side ports) of 50 guns (which were too weak for the battle-line but could be used to escort convoys), two-deckers of between 64 and 90 guns which formed the main part of the fleet, and larger three- or even four-deckers with 98 Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted June 18, 2007 Governor Posted June 18, 2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_the_Line I couldn't find this link in the Wikipedia Index. Mr Bonaparte or Mr Phred can you confirm this? Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted June 18, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted June 18, 2007 I couldn't find this link in the Wikipedia Index. Mr Bonaparte or Mr Phred can you confirm this? I used this opportunity to add an entire new section on "Ship Types" in our Wikipedia Index. Quote

I would think it would be more than 42! Anyhow, I look forward to seeing your creation! Thats not quite true my friend. a third rate ship would have two gundecks and still would be rated as ship of the line. But a rather good ,short expl of it *y* I heard that "ship-of-the-line" is an appellation, there is sloop of war called "ship-of-the-line", for exemple. The ships of the line are just ship using the "line strategy". But that's true, 42 guns is not enough to be a first rate... But I've not more cannons to put !! (I started with a clasic base of ship, with three parts in the middle.) Hi and welcome to the real world :-D dont worry about your english. as long as im here there will at least be one person here who write less good english *sweet* For the ship of the line thing. Royal Navy made six rates+ unrated(cutters, sloops and brigs etc) for ex, a 50 gun (on two decks) was a 4th rate ship and until 1756 a ship of the line but after that it was two small for the line of battle. and therefore would be named frigate instead of battleship(=ship that fight in the line of battle) At first a "Ship" was to have 3 square rigged masts. with less than that it was classed as a sloop or brig. . so naval terms are hard to understand. my advice is to read on internet. like wikipedia or other pages. If you are building a first rate ship, it would need about 100++ in guns and if we then have 3 deks it would lead to about 15-20 guns on each deck(each side) on a real ship. but if you take a look at ships here you will see 2 deckers with 3 or 4 guns at each deck. this is lego after all. if you use your 42 guns and make a 3decker you can call it a ship of the line just as good as all the other ships :) Have a nice day everyone. Today its my birthday :-D become a old man now. 30 years old :) Quote
