TNT apples Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I'm actually really looking forward to this theme, It's good that TLG are making more female-oriented themes, I just hope they use colours like bright green and reddish-brown, rather than an over-abundance of pinks and blues. This could be a really good 'non-girly' theme that would still appeal to girls if Lego does it right. Quote
Cyberbricker Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Don't wanna be the dealbreaker here, but did ya guys even thought about it that these are maybe not elves in the sense of "tolkien"style but rather with wings, magic wands and dressed in pink? I was thinking the same thing! Quote

Yes, they're mostly girls, but it's not a "girly" world they live in. Quote
Kliq Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I honestly wouldn't mind a fantasy theme aimed at girls. What kills it for me are the minidolls. I could have spent a fortune by now on Friends sets if they contained standard minifigures. I understand there are those of you who are 'parts' people, but I am not. I buy LEGO sets, build them, display them, play with them. I did buy almost all of the Disney Princess sets only because it was the closest thing to Castle that was available at the time. I enjoyed putting them together and all of the accessories they came with, but the dolls have no place next to my minifigures. I won't rule out purchasing these sets, because if they look good enough I'll still buy them and populate them with proper minifigures, but even then sometimes the scale still seems 'off' which is why I haven't dived into Friends. Dr.Cogg Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 (edited) I'm kind of glad this is not replacing LotR, because that would mean ,there would be no chance at all for a third way of LotR and that would have really stunk, but this theme does sound interesting,I wonder what kind of elves they will be? gedren_y Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 The top left image is the kind of anime elf I was referring to when I mentioned the idea of the reuse of the orc hair/ear piece. Yes, given the reported set numbers, this looks like another mini-doll series. If this is going to be something like the Belville Fairy-Tale sets, then I'm all for it. I missed out on those sets, and now am kicking myself for it because there were some wonderful detail parts in those sets. Quote
Venunder Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 If this is true then we definitely need some Battle Trolls with armour, both as enemies for the Elves and as Olog-hai soldiers attacking our Minas Tirith MOC's. :) Quote
Sir Walter Maugham Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 At least my hopes were dashed quickly. So these will likely have flesh colored skin as apposed to yellow? That's a shame. It renders all potentially useful hair+ears pieces useless for me since I only use traditional yellow. I guess we could still get some useful parts from this theme. Quote
Oky Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Haha, this thread is hilarious! I feel sorry for those who got their hopes up for a Castle subtheme, but I can understand where the confusion came from. Both "fairy" and "elf" translate to "Elf" in German, and Google Translate isn't smart enough to know that a Lego theme with spas and magical bakeries is more likely to be called Fairies. If these are indeed fairies, I wonder how they will pull off wings on minidolls. Perhaps this should be moved to Special Themes. Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Both "fairy" and "elf" translate to "Elf" in German, and Google Translate isn't smart enough to know that a Lego theme with spas and magical bakeries is more likely to be called Fairies. Exactly. This is also the reason why the Elves are called "Elben" in the German versions of Tolkien's works and adaptations thereof If I'm not mistaken it was Tolkien himself who came up with this since he assisted in a lot of foreign translations of his works, but I digress This theme certainly won't be my cup of tea, but we're at least granted a lot of cool parts if previous Friends-esque sets are any indication Quote
Faefrost Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I vote we all army build them and set them laying siege to Helms Deep. The true face of evil! I'm kind of glad this is not replacing LotR, because that would mean ,there would be no chance at all for a third way of LotR and that would have really stunk, but this theme does sound interesting,I wonder what kind of elves they will be? Based on the set names? I'm gonna go with "Keebler" Quote
BartSimpson Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 I would definitely put these with the LoTR stuff , in the forest Quote

Kayne Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 (edited) So, I googled "elves Naida" and came across a series of juvenile fantasy novels called Naida's Quest Trilogy. I wonder if there will be some sort of animated movie made out of it that Lego bought the license to? Edited August 29, 2014 by Kayne Quote
greenalfonzo Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Ugh! Boo! Lego is nothing but bad news these days. I guess there are still the castley figs in the CMF series. Quote

I'm gonna go with "Keebler" Lol, Faefrost you never cease to surprise me in your sense of humor in a dream squashing kind of way. I can just picture 50 minidolls laying siege to system scale Helms Deep! Though somehow I doubt Alcarin, Deathleech, or Darth Cadeus will be eager to gather these 'armies'. Quote

TeufelHund Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 I doubt a fantasy-themed castle series would simply have been called "Elves" anyway - it's far too limiting and doesn't encompass the whole range of what you might expect (eg dragons, trolls, orcs, dwarves etc) in such a theme. New castle series are typically released in the second half of the year so I'm pretty sure we'll see something new late next year as the current Castle range will have hung around for two years by then without being refreshed and the LOTR/Hobbit sets will be no more. gedren_y Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 So, I googled "elves Naida" and came across a series of juvenile fantasy novels called Naida's Quest Trilogy. I wonder if there will be some sort of animated movie made out of it that Lego bought the license to? I took what you found, and did a search on IMDb. Sorry, but the only Naida in their listings is a character from the 1915 film The Living Death. I also did a search for Elves, to try and find any upcoming movies that TLG might have licensed. The only thing I found was an animated fantasy that has been listed as "in development" since October 2008, called King of the Elves. I can't get much because I don't have a Pro account, but the bit of summery I can see is this: 'A Mississippi man becomes the reluctant ruler of a mythical race of elves after he saves them from a deadly troll.' I doubt this is it, though. This is most likely an 'in house' theme. TLG launched Friends, and apparently it sells. Then they license Disney Princesses, and do a limited run and they sell. Looks like TLG is just developing that niche market further. Quote
Artanis I Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Again, the name Tinkerbell. I don't think "Elves" will be pink & purple. Perhaps on the box. I'm expecting soft green & blue pastelly colours. But if in fact it is "Fairies" and not "Elves" - well it could be anything. Regardless, I like the idea of this theme but am obviously disappointed that it isn't a Castle subtheme, like I'd been hoping for prior to even the first rumour. I don't mind, actually. The friends hair works on standard minifig heads, and I have no issue with fleshtones. This might be even better because there is the possibility that a wider range of elf ear tones may become available. I buy for parts, not sets, so what theme we get the elf parts in doesn't really matter to me. I also have no problem using pastel colors. That's a thought. But not very useful in LOTR, those elves all have the same long hair, and same ear colour. Quote

Despite we can still take the parts and accessories, the figures still seem to be a kind of waste in disguise. Some MOCs are okay, but that wouldn't change the main advertising of the theme. Unless minifigures would also be involved in this theme.I think CMF series already prove that FOLs and boys do welcome elves/fairies minifigures, though some minidoll variations would be interesting too. Regardless, I like the idea of this theme but am obviously disappointed that it isn't a Castle subtheme, like I'd been hoping for prior to even the first rumour. If this theme is very Castle-like, it would be like what Friends has been these years. On the other hand, maybe it has very own unique figures or buildings like Chima, so we wouldn't tend to mix the figures or parts for other uses. This could be a pro or a con, because maybe not all Friends fans would love this. Edited August 29, 2014 by Dorayaki Quote
Maxim I Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 I am guessing it will be like Friends and Disney. So indeed elves, but more girl-friendly. (the reason why I think this is the name of the sets) Quote
TheLegoDr Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 This could be interesting. I like the idea of new colors/pieces that can be used elsewhere. I'm hoping for some good looking elf hairpeices, but they will probably be too girly for LOTR-esque figures. I'd assume wings would either be like the Bumblebee Girl mold (only suited for minidoll bodies) OR they will use plastic like the Geonosians. Quote
Darth Punk Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 We might find out very soon. TLG is announcing a new theme at New York comic con. http://www.thebrickfan.com/lego-announcing-new-theme-at-new-york-comic-con-2014/ Quote
Jakura Nuva Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 (edited) Groovebricks is stating that the Elves theme is going to be aimed towards younger girls, similar to friends. If that's true, I think it's safe to say that we're getting forest-y, fairy-like elves. http://www.groovebricks.com/lego-elves-theme-coming-2015/ Which, for a Tolkien fan like me, sucks.
