Hey guys, just a heads up, considering that sets this year that cost $24.99 NZD are $12.99 USD, I'd expect them to be much lower than $20. Hopefully at that $12.99 price point, but I'd be okay with $14.99

What I'd love to see an a future set is Lotus in the classic black and gold trim. best color combo in F1 history, lead by one of the best drivers in F1 history Ayrton Senna.

Now that you mention it, I think a Lotus coupe rather than formula one car would be cool, especially an Evora or similar.

I have moved this thread over to the Town forum, as minifig-scale vehicles seem to fit well in our forum. :classic:

Want to change "Super Champions" to "Speed Champions" as well since we now know that's the official name?

I don't mind stickers, mostly because once parts get printed they'll end up being single-use parts and may look out of place when used in another model or MOC'ed. You may not apply stickers and build it as is and still appreciate the 991 RSR as just a base 991 GT3 and the 997 GT3R Hybrid (the orange one) as just a 911. You can leave the stickers out of the 458 GT2 model and still have it as just a 458.

OK, so you may be bummed by the stickers on the Big 3 Hypercars (P1, 918, LaF), but they're few, and some of the defining details are still brick-built.

Around $20-30 for the singles, considering the licensing fees and stuff, and also because of the new wheels, tyres, arches, and roof/windshields.

Yo, guys, the real-life McLaren P1 GTR is announced and feelers for a LaFerrariXX (like the Ferrari FXX) has been circulating. Couple that with the 918 RSR concept and the LEGO models might just get the same treatment from modders!

(OK, maybe not the LaFXX as it hasn't been shown yet, but still)

Plus, the latter mod will go well with the orange 997 GT3 model. I mean, look at it:

All you need is a roof for the 918!

Also, here's hoping for the eventual return in spirit of the Tiny Turbo sub-line! It'd be interesting how'd they come up with 4W versions of these cars.

And another thing, why did TLG not bring in the P1 and 918 in the press release, but the F70 did, considering that those three form the Hybrid Hyper Trio? Or maybe it's to show what areas of autos TLG will cover?

there is a good chance that Ferrari didn't want to play nice (as usual) with its rivals, specifically with its flagship car. but beyond that I may have been a simple oversight.

I'm an endurance racing fan, and I like Lego, so a combination of both would be highly appreciated. Taking into account all the effort (new parts) I'm somewhat disappointed though. The cars look good from some angles, but from others they are just very bulky or "wrong".

The Ferrari 458 GT2 could also be interpreted as a 550 GT. Actually, moving the driver's compartment a little forward would correspond to the 458, moving it backward it results in a 550 GT, but right now it's none of both really. It's still easily recognizable, but this is due to the stickers. Imagine the same car in yellow with different stickers, then it might work as a Corvette in a similar good or bad way. If someone had shown me the car in neutral colours and told me it's a model of a racecar I would have thought of the current Aston Martin Vantage V8 GTE probably ;-) One of the reasons are the side windows, which are much straighter at the bottom on the Aston Martin, similar to the model, whereas it's more curvy on the 458. Same on the P1, I'm interested to see how it looks like with the driver's compartment moved one brick forward. The front of the 918 also looks very weird IMO.

Overall I'm not sure whether sets like that are a good idea. For grown-ups they might not be realistic enough, and for children they might be frustrating due to the tons of stickers - leaving aside that children are probably not into endurance racing like the Porsche 911 RSR and the Ferrari 458 GT2, so even if the cars are good representations they might actually not care about it (which is a good thing of course if you consider some of the "flaws"). It might especially be a problem because children probably also like to crash the cars (sometimes at least  ), so the stickers might be damaged very soon. For children I would have preferred a collection of bricks which allow to recreate your own racecars or more sets like 60053. A shame that they didn't release at least a second car like that, same for the F1 car. There's simply nothing to race against - but maybe sales volumes weren't that good. Anyway. Let's see how the cars look like, so far only few pictures are available, which might be misleading to some extent. And sorry for the rather harsh comments, but I'm into the race cars and thus have much higher expectations than others

no need to apologize for your opinion Oderland, there are many of us doing the same critiques you are. the 458 is in my opinion the worst of the bunch, and I fully intend to avoid stickers as much as possible. I fully intend to buy the McLaren, LaFerarri and all the Porsches but I hold out on committing completely until I can get a good look at the box in person, or even better the actual models. Also at the scale these cars are built at its incredibly difficult to get it perfect (after all the wheel size alone is WAY to big, seriously these tires scale to about 45inches tall!) over all these are more like caricatures of the cars they represent.

Yes, this is the main problem, you need a certain size to make smooth, curvy cars. Thus I don't understand why they try to recreate existing cars. E.g. look at the Porsche 911, the side above the mudguard is just very blocky. Or take the 918 and this gap going through the headlight sticker. If it were a MOC, okay, but this is a regular set, so they should have come up with a better solution. Dunno, but TLC would be better off by designing their own cars, as it's easier to make a good looking fictitious car and to avoid any of these flaws.

However, thinking of the cars from the City theme then the Speed Champions cars are certainly a nice addition. While the quality of the larger City vehicles has improved to a large extent in recent years, the cars are still disappointing (mainly due to the large mudguards) or actually have less details than classic cars (they often had sunroofs). But the Speed Championship cars won't work well with City cars due to the different dimensions, that's a major drawback IMO (think of an illegal street race, we have thousands of police cars, but they are too small for Speed Champions - but wait, this means we will see Speed Championship Police  ).

In my opinion the opposite is the case. MOCs - especially vehicle MOCs - are supposed to look better than regular sets - not because moccers are better designers than Lego designers which is truly not the case. But because their models aren't influenced by all the restrictions a Lego designer has, regarding part count, cost, playability, and last but not least stability.

The Speed Champions sets are designed for the needs of KFOLs and TFOLs ("7-14"). Just like the regular City vehicles ("6-12" or something) they aren't supposed to please an AFOL, unlike a modular building ("16+"). That's why we need to modify them to fulfill our needs in any case. The good news concerning the Speed Champions is that we get quite a few useful parts with them that will improve car moccing as such. That's why I'm looking forward to all of those sets!

Emphasis mine, as it's what's what I was about to type was all about.

Case in point, I'll compare the McLaren P1 set to Thomas Nunez's McLaren P1:

13987418248_72bebaba74_c.jpg

The consensus from those who commented on this and those who commented on the press pics when I noted them is that Tommy's MOC was better-executed, but I'd bet 10 Washingtons it'd go down in pieces once a child takes hold of it.

I'm a GT racing fan, too, and yes, I'd readily diss the 458 GT2 model, but for TLG's first ever try in designing the cars in the set (save the F1 cars, which I find actually beautiful), I can say they did a good job. Of course, a side pic comparison can be the only way to tell if TLG did it, but still

For now, let the kids get what they deserve: some really good LEGO cars. Give it until autumn or so and UCS sets will show up complete with Designer videos and a Jalopnik article.

As for me, I've been wanting (WANTING) those BBS and Enkei wheels to be finally made in the same scale as the stock rims.
