January 23, 201510 yr The crane set sounds like a good set. Just wish it didn't have/needed ropes. Agreed. I hate string.
January 23, 201510 yr Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? How would make a crawler crane without string, then? With chains?
January 23, 201510 yr Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? How would make a crawler crane without string, then? With chains? Agreed, there is no kind of crane, crawler or otherwise, that does not use string in some capacity. By the way, reeving the Lego crawler cranes is not actually that complex, no more so than reeving the hook of 42009. And, if that's too much for you, I suggest you stick with something like Juniors. January 23, 201510 yr Seriously. We're not getting scaled-down wire rope from TLG for more accurate cranes.

That's a bit strong. I don't wish to moderate, but let's keep it friendly, huh, Saberwing? I just think string is an utter pain. If you're accidentally too rough with it, it can fray, and it's very fiddly, especially if you want it to look like it does on the box. I generally avoid sets with string for this reason, unless they're too awesome to pass up. 42029 is a surprising example.
January 23, 201510 yr @Maaboo I think you have found the perfect solution to your problems with string
January 23, 201510 yr @Maaboo I think you have found the perfect solution to your problems with string Mm-hm.
January 23, 201510 yr That is to NOT buy sets with string? Andy, you suck, there's too many sets with strings to avoid, and you know it :) (Laughing, are we?) @Maaboo I think you have found the perfect solution to your problems with string
January 23, 201510 yr Andy, you suck, there's too many sets with strings to avoid, and you know it :) Ha ha, what's the alternative, no Technic sets with string? Seems like Maaboo has solve his/her own problem in the most elegant way I have some sympathy on string. I build a lot of City sets for my kids. It seems most of them have a winch with string and hook, or worse, the fishing rod part with fishing line. I hate tying the knots for those.
January 24, 201510 yr TLG should supply the string as loose strands, so you have to assemble the strings yourself. Now that's hardcore LEGO building!

January 24, 201510 yr Or cotton seeds for growing it. Or silk caterpillars. LEGO should release all its sets in the form of quark plasmas.
January 24, 201510 yr LEGO should release all its sets in the form of quark plasmas. That would be too hot and too quick and too compact. One would have to wait until it expands and cools enough.
January 24, 201510 yr ^Yep. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't complain about strings. Believe me, you're gonna need them in more ways than one. Edited January 24, 201510 yr by XAxles
January 24, 201510 yr ^OK. So, maybe it's B-model guessing time? At least for the Fire Plane and Crawler Crane?
January 24, 201510 yr For the crawlercrane maybe a pipeline dozer? +1 Plausible given the parts in the set, and also a nice subject. Edited January 24, 201510 yr by andythenorth
January 24, 201510 yr You mean a pipe layer? Not flashy enough, I think. Still, could be a quite interesting model. BTW, specially for davidmull: only four days left till we get decent pics and videos of the 2H wave. Edited January 24, 201510 yr by jantjeuh
