It seems the only point of contention with the Arocs so far is the front grill. Do the guys who have seen it think this would look better? Obviously the sides would be hidden by panels or something.

I doubt the guys at TLG are finished improving it yet  . Just thought I could help them along  .

The final model is complete for a while... After the final design is approved, instructions have to be done, then you have to set all the machines to produce the set, etc, then you have to deliver it all over the world.

At this time, the model is complete. No doubt about it.

I talked with a designer some time ago. And he was telling me that he was always lost when people were talking to him and saying something like "the new sets of 2014".

It was missleading for him (and probably for many other designers), because a new set of 2014 is :

a) not new for him

b) not a 2014 set. It was designed 1 year earlier : 2013.

At this point I would say they are preliminary. I think 42009 was changed even after it was shown at the toy fairs. Look how much the 24 hour racer has changed. TLGs production capabilities are highly efficient and streamlined, way more so than years ago.

I was expecting such an answer.

Regarding 42009, they just displayed some preliminary sets (not so prelim ; they were very close to the final product) which would do the job. But the model itself, at Lego DK, is complete, with the final version.

As for 42039, the retailer catalog is distributed in August/September, so it may be done in July, and so, the guys send a picture from a prelim made in June or maybe earlier. At the end of July, at the latest, the final version of the model is complete.

Also, there's simply NO way those pics aren't intentionally leaked by TLG. They're allways lowres, small size. It actually takes effort to get a picture quality like that these days through photoshop. Even the cheapest current digital camera/phone would provide a much better resolution

I mean, "the spy" is not using this :

Processing it through this :

And finally emails them out to a select few who are told 'not' to distribute it :

This all just seem to a simple marketing strategy from TLG :sceptic:

Who cares about resolution ?

Did you ever see a retailer catalog ?

Pics are very very small, prelim, with generally no stickers and no printed parts. You could have 24 M pixels with your device, it would not improve the quality of the pic.

The pics we have are crappy cause what is printed on retailers catalog is crappy.

It is as simple as that...

edit : the prelim pics we have are zoomed in a lot.

Take the pic, divide height by 2, and you get more or less what you can see on a retailer catalog.

Ah could be right. Who really knows. Anyone remember the time scale for picking the winner, redesigning, creating instructions, mass producing and then releasing the boss crawler?

We care about resolution. If it was high enough we'd not be arguing over details we can't properly make out

Yes, I've seen retailer catalogs and I even have a few old ones

No, they're not all crappy in retailer catalogues. If they we're of such bad quality there'd be no point of the catalogues at all, would there?

Simple as that

That's good to know. So really the mb was designed before we even got the volvo?

Overall look of front of this car is ehm, for non licensed set it will be great but for licensed it is pretty bad. Also usage of that wheel as logo is much better than sticker.

efferman :

You must be joking. At least I hope for printed/stickered Mercedes logo star.

I think the front needs work. Going by what Anio said, this may be an earlier version that they used with the dealer's catalogs. Let's hope it changes.

Unless of course, Lego be like,"Oh, you like how the model (42039) looks? too bad, we're making it look ugly. Oh, you don't like how this model looks? Too bad, it does not change."

I'm waiting until we see the version at a toy fair to make judgements about the front end.

Maybe they'll go in the direction City sets was going some years ago; dumbing it down. Maybe the entire cabin (or maybe the grille area) will be just one huge piece, unusuable for anything but Mercedes Arcos trucks! Kinda like the huge bucket from set 7344

Just kidding, of course
