Yup!

I'm going to need some red bull I think.

If you are sitting out the live build, you definitely will

Anyone french to translate here? :)

I won't translate everything. Here is the part that I consider the most important / relevant :

And now that we have studied all the functions, what about maneuverability and playability? The handling is very good. Whereas on standard gearboxes we must initiate a function and choose their direction of action with a switch, this crane has much easier controls. Indeed, once the electric motor is on, it is no longer necessary to care about the switch of the battery box. You engage a lever, and it simultaneously selects the function and direction of rotation. Also, as we have seen, if you have configured the controls correctly (switch of the battery box and winch rolled in the right direction), levers are very intuitive: when you push the lever of driving, the crane drive forward, when you pull back the cable lever, the winch rolls, etc. Even the manual clamp ultimately poses little concern. On the contrary, the gameplay is less rosy. With the boom, you can do what you want: the mechanisms have consistent speeds, the range of the boom is about 50 cm (from the tracks at the end of the horizontally positioned boom), and can even operate two winches simultaneously if necessary, in the same direction or in opposite directions (beware, however, the end of a winch mechanically locks the other in the case of simultaneous use). However, the crane movements (driving, rotating) are really problematic. Firstly, rotating the turret with a control located on the turret is a nonsense in itself. Because in fact, it means that the lever that controls this function starts a rotation when the mechanism is activated. In other words, the set behaves as if we were driving a car became out of control. The drive is not bad in itself, but its configuration (2 tracks linked) means that the crane is unable to steer ... And it is not possible to fake activating the mechanism the turret while retaining the latter in order to rotate the chassis. Even on a smooth surface, the motor is far from being strong enough; immobile caterpillars generate insurmountable friction on the ground. In short, the # 42042 is doomed to go straight on ! It's so disappointing that it then comes almost to ignore the propulsion and the rotation of the turret to focus only on successful functions (boom). Given these facts, we must admit that the set has a gross mistake in its specifications. The set is not remote controlled (and not even fully motorized), thus having a manual rotation of the turret would not have been absurd. This is the case on many sets (mobile cranes # 8421 and # 42009 in particular), and it works well. Moreover, it would have solved the problems related to the syndrome of "crazy car". Then, with two channels (the one of the turret being free), it would have been possible to motorize 2 tracks independently, and thus to have a driving and steering. In this way, the movements of the crane would have been greatly improved, and the set would have offered far more opportunities to play with. Best of all, handling would have also been improved for even simpler. Pushing the two levers, the crane drives forward, putting them in opposite directions, it steers. Doesn't it remind you 2 famous yellow Technic sets from years 2007 and 2010?

I think I can get a good sleep during the build. He'll still be building it when I wake up

I really like the crane. I like that they took the time to motorise the super structure rotation. Would have been nice to be able to steer the tracks but I prefer that it is NOT RC. I prefer a more "hands on" model, RC does nothing except make it more expensive.

I don't agree. And I think it would be too big discussion for this topic. Lets just say: to each his own :)

What? You don't agree with me?! My whole world has just been turned upside down!:grin:

I was actually hoping to avoid such a lengthy discussion, just wanted to show my appreciation for the direction TLG chose with this model :classic:

Unless I'll start with some parts pre-built to speed it up a bit... :classic:

But think I won't have time for much till the start...

I have been away for a few months, I am really enjoying catching up and seeing what everybody has been doing.

Is it just me or has the level of building really jumped to a new level of late?

The new Mercedes is indeed more complicated and raised the bar very high for any other Technic set out there.

Welcome back Paul B.

Thanks, really good to be back. I have lots of ideas of things to build, all around a theme / idea ;)

Nothing this year has really jumped out at me so I am keen to find out what year holds before I look at buying some older sets :)

indeed....which is why i have been just buying in parts, as i too am more interested in building old sets. i recently built the A and B of 8067...both are superb, but i think the B model just slighly wins out. Almost all the parts collected no to build 8273. I have all the parts for 8043 and plan to build A and B.

I bought 8289 BNIB some time ago, but decided to just build the superb B model...as such i have been collecting parts to build the A. I deffo want to focus on the old sets that you cant buy anymore before buiding or buying the new stuff.

Anyone have any idea when the 42039 is coming to America? If that's so delayed I wonder how delayed the Acros, crane, and fire plane will be

I know how you feel, the has 42038 has been released here but none of my local stores are carrying it yet.
