Herky Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 all I know is that by the pics and by rollermonkey's stud size descriptions, this is NOT what I was expecting out of Lego for a line that is several years old and could be done better; seems this line is on life support for creativity which is sad, the 2 new ones seem way inadequate to what this line could put out Quote
henrysunset Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) Anyone save the photos? The Imgur link seems to be dead. Inquiring minds must know!!! I found the images. (Google search, select "photos", filter to show last 7 days worked for me.) I do not really agree with the discontent all that much. I am actually more excited to see a small-scale model that captures the *essence* of a larger building, rather than the large-scale AFOL re-creations of every architectural detail. I do think that their model for Lincoln memorial is not as strong as the one which you can buy instructions to build on ebay. That said, It looks like we may finally have a cheap source for this part: 85861 I see 36 of them, if not 72. (not sure if the top row is hollow also or not...) My only serious critique of Flatiron is the color selection. I'm excited to see the series is still alive. Another large model would certainly be appreciated! henrysunset Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I just spent a couple hours analyzing the Flatiron building photo, and re-creating part of the model to get a better idea what we can expect to find when it is officially released... Off the wall Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) Interesting work, thanks for sharing. While I'm a completists as far as this lego series is concerned, I'm not thrilled with this set (flatiron). It appears to be another 'pocket' set. One that you would find in a souvenir shop, buy it, put it in your pocket/small carry on and assemble it on the airplane while you're on your way home. In addition, there are other buildings in NYC that are more interesting. But, at least the series continues...... Edited September 19, 2014 by Off the wall Quote

I had not considered the LEGO Architecture series from that perspective, but it's definitely true of most of the models in the line. I wonder what percentage of LEGO Architecture sets are sold in the city where the building is located (presumably for tourists visiting that city) vs. purchased elsewhere in the world. For example, Villa Savoye set was definitely for sale at the gift shop, although it is a rather seldom-visited tourist site. (It doesn't help that it's over an hour from the center of Paris in a quiet suburban community...) ---tom Quote

L@go Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 This thread is bordering on derailing, but I'll chime in to say that my Empire State Building set was bought in the Empire State Building gift shop. It's the only Architecture set I've bought at an actual location, and therefore owning that one is more special than if I'd bought it online from LEGO. To stay on-topic I'll say that I quite like the two new sets - bear in mind that the images are (very) preliminary and they will probably both look much better when the final artwork is revealed. The Architecture line is one of two current LEGO lines that I keep collecting - the hobby has, for me, evolved into being more and more about MOCing, but I keep coming back to these sets because they're lovely display pieces - and the packaging and presentation is so exquisite. Off the wall Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 My intent was not to say the purpose of TLG with the architecture/landmark was to provide inventory for souvenir shops. All I'm saying is that most of the arch sets would serve that purpose quite well. Many of them are more of a caricature of the actual building or, at best, a small and relatively low detailed model of the building. The Frank Lloyd Wright buildings come closer to what I prefer than the preliminary pictures of flatiron and the Lincoln memorial. My wish is for a series of 3000 to 4000 piece Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. But, that ain't gonna happen....... Quote
Lyichir Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 all I know is that by the pics and by rollermonkey's stud size descriptions, this is NOT what I was expecting out of Lego for a line that is several years old and could be done better; seems this line is on life support for creativity which is sad, the 2 new ones seem way inadequate to what this line could put out I for one thought the Flatiron building looked gorgeous when I saw the pics. I'm not an architecture expert and wasn't comparing it directly to pictures of the real deal, but it looked similar enough to what I remember of the actual building to be instantly recognizeable, and solely from a building perspective it looked gloriously complex, interesting, and aesthetically pleasing. So considering that I think "life support for creativity" is a significant overstatement. The new sets look fascinating and I would expect them to be as popular and successful as many past sets in the theme. Quote
talos Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 I am glad too that they are adding to the Architecture line. I missed out on quite a few of them, buying the Robie House was what got me back into Lego. I was just about to buy the Farnsworth House and they retired it on me! I want to get the Villa Savoye next, for my birthday. Every time I fill out the 'Product Feedback Survey' if its for an Architecture set, there is an extra question asking for suggestions for future models. I always ask for more Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. My favorites, Martin House in Buffalo, or Price Tower in Bartlesville. (I think most of the sets are good attempts, all except the Guggenheim, which I think is the worst representation of a building ever...) Quote

XAxles Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Architecture time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADCTN_wcsfE AW YISS!!!274 pcs for Lincoln Memorial? Hmm... 471 pieces for Flatiron? Ungg! Quote
Fairsy Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I'll get these because I have the whole architecture collection, but the Lincoln Memorial looks awful - such an uninspiring boring set. Quote
Off the wall Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Pretty much what I expected. They fit in well with the rest of the series. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't like more sets and larger sets, it's just that they don't disappoint. They are what they are. Actually, I would call them 'awesome', since that word has come to mean average, not surprising. Quote
rollermonkey Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I'll get these because I have the whole architecture collection, but the Lincoln Memorial looks awful - such an uninspiring boring set. All of this. That LM is so weak... For that matter, the subject barely registers as a blip in the world of Architecture, I wonder why they wouldn't choose something better? The US sales of this line are probably better than the rest of the world, but looking at the offerings. Why would it be any other way? Quote
henrysunset Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 (edited) I guessed 375 pcs and 29.99 for flatiron. Not a terrible guess, but I am doubtful it would be 29.99 with 471 pieces. I really can't tell how they reached such a high part count. There must be a more complex interior substructure than I would have guessed. Maybe they will surprise us with a robust technics substructure like what fan LEGO builder spencer_r does in some of his larger models. I guess we will have to wait and see. I love building without instructions and would be ecstatic if the part list shows up before the set is available in stores so I can try to build the whole thing using only the photos ---tom Edited October 21, 2014 by henrysunset Quote
rollermonkey Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 With piece counts, I'm guessing $40 and $60 for the price points. Quote
Off the wall Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Will the archetecture line survive another two years? It's my favorite, but it just doesn't seem to have a broad enough appeal. Plus, if all we get for next year are the two rather lack luster offerings that have been discussed in detail, it appears that TLG is losing interest in this line, too. Your thoughts? Quote
Herky Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Agree, have said it before, there is enough architecture in the world to do at least 4 sets a year at least as big as Pisa or White House, the LM being that small vs the White House which was much bigger boggles my mind. I would like to see 6 sets a year with one big one at least (big meaning at least 800-1000 pieces) we have all mentioned many a place that could be used, but I agree TLG is seemingly not active in this line to a great extent. Quote
rollermonkey Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Yeah, unless there's another Marina Bay Sands type exclusive, next year is pretty disappointing for Architecture fans... The stores are giving the line a decent amount of real estate, so hopefully that's a good sign. Quote
Steve309 Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Well to be fair it's always been leaked like this. Where these 2 sets will be first half of the year. Then between March-may like how we learned about UN headquarters the September 1st set leaks. We didn't learn about marina bay sands until September of 2013. With it coming out in December. So always possablity for a late leak. But I agree with all. It's dissapointing to see the line slowing down. Quote
Steve309 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 So 21022 Lincoln Memorial appeared on amazon UK The description has some interesting info. Product Description Recreate the Lincoln Memorial with a LEGO Architecture Landmark Series building set with removable roof and Abraham Lincoln statue. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LEGO-21022-Architecture-Lincoln-Memorial/dp/B00NVDJEGO/ref=pd_zg_rss_nr_k_h_b_cs_364074031_5?ie=UTF8&tag=doginthewate-21&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter#productDescription_secondary_view_pageState_1418052469389 I assume it's a January 1st release. But there's been no info on the architecture line in months. Quote

JGW3000 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 It would be epic if it included Lincoln's flying chair from the Lego movie Quote
