Character Building actually lost the license.

Where has it been said that they lost the license? I see a lot of people saying that, but I've never heard any source or what not (besides the fact that LEGO added it to the potential LEGO Ideas sets list).

Uh, well, that's actually my source. LEGO wouldn't let it on Ideas of a competitor had the license. That's why it wasn't allowed before..,

I doubt it, it was said NEW theme not a rehash of an old one.

Yeah, but then again the announcement of the announcement  wasn't official, was it?

And then there is this:

http://www.groovebri...5-release-date/

It is about a rumor that Bionicle will be released in February and the source says:

You can only trust me on my word or not, but let’s just say that time will tell you quickly if my word is worth something…

'Quickly' could mean 'at NYCC'. I don't follow the movie business, so if it is true that JW is not being actively promoted yet, Bionicle seems to be the more likely candidate.

Edit: After reading some more news and rumors, it seems that the announcement was official. But given that 'new' for Lego means 'a police station for City every other year' I would still go with Bionicle

Doctor Who is definitely a kids show in the UK! But I doubt it's that.

Having watched the first 2 episodes of the new season, definitely NOT a kids show, but definitely confusing...not sure I am liking Capaldi yet, just doesn't have the quirky panache of Smith; he's a good actor but his humor so far is just off

I've been watching Doctor Who since the Jon Pertwee days and, while I'll be among the first to agree that it has amassed quite a fan base over the past half century, I just can't see it being a Lego THEME, a couple kits and a handful of mini-figures, sure, but once you've done the TARDIS, the control room interior, maybe an UCS scale brick-built Darlek or Cyberman where do you go with it?

Quality issues aside, even Character Builder struggled with this. Nearly all the sets I've seen from them were really just packs of action figures with a pathetic excuse for a build as an afterthought (if at all). A pedestal for a Weeping Angel? More like a Weeping Angel doll and a handful of spare parts. Other than a Darlek and the TARDIS, the building-side of the kits were either contrived, obscure or both. Now maybe in the US, I'm just not seeing the full breadth and depth of their efforts to capitalize on the license (when they held it) but I also can't think of a build-able, iconic subject that they missed (at least with respect to the Nu-Who offerings)

Now, I'd love it if TLC were to make a copy of Bessie, the third Doctor's canary-yellow roadster. It would be a great model, fun to build, fun to play with, classic enough for a non-Who fan to appreciate it - but seriously - what kid today even knows that Doctor Who used to drive a car? I don't think any of the modern Doctors have even gotten behind the wheel.

The story format of Doctor Who just doesn't lend itself to a building "theme." Every story arc is a new setting, new characters, etc. In the early days it seemed like half their story lines were dictated by what hand-me-down sets and costumes they could scrounge from other BBC production efforts. There just isn't a lot of "iconic" material to draw upon from a construction toy perspective (mini-figures sure, but not buildings or vehicles) There have been some great potential subjects over the years (how could there not be after half a century) but most were one-shots that only die-hard fans would recognize. At least with something like The Simpsons you have a large, stable cast and many familiar settings to draw upon (not that I'm expecting a Moe's Tavern, Nuclear Plant or SpringField Dump (now featuring the world's longest burning tire fire…) any time soon.

I hope one of the many Lego Ideas Doctor Who projects makes it through, as an Official Lego TARDIS would be grand, and they make a _set_ but as a _theme_, I think the iconic waters are just too shallow. I'd love to be wrong on this point, but I just don't see it happening.

I think it's either a special Jurassic Park set or a new action theme. I don't think it will be a Jurassic World set because most of the time the movie makers don't want "spoilers" to be released so they are normally released last.

If this is a relaunch of bionicle, I'll be conflicted, I love bionicle, but it's NYCC, not a thing many people would get pumped about, and it did say new theme. But bionicle has a great storyline, which would fit in, but who knows. :shrug_oh_well: As long as it's not a theme that's horrible, or god forbid the elves theme (0.0001% chance of happening), I'll be happy.

What would the fan base at a Comic Con / pop-culture convention get excited about? Maybe something related to upcoming mass-market releases, such as the HP-related "Magical Beasts and Where to FInd Them" movie, or maybe a new theme based on SW #7 movie or SW spin-off movies. Maybe a mini-doll scale Super Heroes or SW theme?

Just keep in mind, as I pointed out in detail in some other thread, the last time LEGO was at NYCC, they had four reveals.

Do you think if Lego made the set`s it would sell good ????

What theme are you speaking of, I'll go through my theories for all ideas,

Doctor Who: It would sell to a devoted fan base, and those who bought them, would by them all. Would the fan base be big enough? I can't say, probably not in the USA, but in the UK, who knows.

Top Gear: I don't think this would sell very many sets, unless they made a single set. Or maybe if they were in a BBC CMF, but I don't think lego would do a BBC CMF, but I would be an interesting idea, Sherlock, Top Gear, Doctor Who, and a few minor others that only people from the UK would know.

Bionicle: Yes, but only if they could gain traction with the kids of today, the AFOL support would be there.

Jurassic World: I don't know, depends on how good the movie does. Although they could overcome that if the sets were amazing.

You're all off the mark.

It's obviously going to be the Galidor reboot. This isn't rocket science, people. mQkF6O0.gif

Of course! How could we have missed something so obvious?

Would Doctor Who sell well? I don't know. From the looks of it, Character Building didn't (but of course we don't know for sure. And if we did, there may have been other factors going into that). It's not really something I can see doing well. I predict another "Lord of the Rings"... But who knows? It's been on for fifty years (though it went off the air for a bit). Someone must be watching it. But are there enough someones? I'd say no. Maybe if another movie came out (but even then, I predict a second Middle Earth)

I buy a lot of used job lots and I’ve lost count of the times I’ve pulled home-made Lego tardis out of bulk…

In the UK, Dr Who is very kid focused and Dr Who Lego would sell well as the brand presence is huge, assuming it was priced appropriately. It’s very heavily promoted by the BBC and has both appeal to kids (current) and to the paying parents (nostalgia). Globally, maybe it’s not sufficiently popular for Lego to invest in a larger campaign. I Don’t know. it's possible that this cycle may have had its peak popularity with the previous Dr and as popularity wanes, so does merchandising opportunity. Time will tell but is suspect a Dr Who Ideas set is probably the most likely set we’ll see.

Although the Dr Who Minifig series / CMF idea someone suggested is genius; that would run and run

I had a thought...

Let's say we do get a Doctor Who theme... Based on LEGO's previous license patterns... What do you suppose the chances are that almost every set will feature the 10th Doctor? I figure it'll be half 12, half 10...

If one is pessimistic, one cannot be disappointed. Well, I am as pessimistic as it gets in this case.., I really hope I'm wrong.

With the front page article on the reboot of Bionicle, I do wonder if they will have that as the key announcement...Lego is sealed up too tight now, we need some leaks

My money is on Bionicle now. And part of me hopes it is. When I was a kid I had the blue and green guys from the original wave, and if they throw back to that, there'd be an excellent nostalgia moment.

I don't know much about Doctor Who, but a TARDIS seems like the only set LEGO could possibly make out of a license. And, because of that, they could just approve that Ideas project in the recent review to go into production.

As many people have said, my bets are on BIONICLE. Of course, they said it would be a "new" theme announced, but some people aren't taking into consideration that if LEGO referred to it as a "returning" theme, we would have known it was BIONICLE immediately. Obviously, TLG wants to keep this under wraps (though they haven't been doing a good job, already).

Jurassic World also seems like a great possibility. I guess we will find out soon!

I really doubt it's Doctor Who. The UK would be the only place for them to sell well, and I really doubt that they'll release a entire theme that is exclusive to one country.

I doubt it's Doctor Who because a single CUUSOO / Ideas set is not a theme (though it can obviously spearhead one if it does well), and the announcement is supposedly for a theme. There's no indication it has anything to do with any Ideas sets at all.

That said, there's no small amount of Doctor Who merchandise available here in the US, which someone obviously thinks sells well enough here to bother with, and most of it is frankly more plentiful than the quantities available of most CUUSOO / Ideas sets. Doctor Who seems to sell enough merchandise in the US already for an Ideas set to be viable.
