GoH Banner Design Contest

We are in need of a new banner for our beloved Guilds of Historica Forum and we are giving you all a change to design one! So put your bricks aside, not for too long of course, and put your artistic skills to good use!

The 'rules' are as follows:

1. Banners should include the EB logo and preferably (not mandatory) as well as our slogan.

1.1 Logo examples, resized and padded properly, one should be placed in the first 140px of your banner. Feel free to make adjustments to the brick colour if you think it would be appropriate.

1.2 The font can vary depending on the theme of the banner, but the slogan has always been the same.

2. Banners need to be saved as PNG files to avoid jpeg compression. Source files should be kept along the way if possible. Keeping those files allows for potential future adjustments.

3. We tend to use 800x100px or 900x100px for banners and backgrounds, but 1000x100px would also be acceptable. The banner and the background must be the same size and able to be displayed seamlessly, meaning that the background fits on the end of the banner and can be repeated with itself if necessary. The easiest way to achieve this is to make sure that the banner and background pattern start and end with matching patterns, like the example below.

In this case, the background would actually be displayed 2 times on an average monitor.

Here is how it looks next to the banner.

Here is how it looks next to itself.

For a user with a screen resolution that is over 1600 wide, this would mean that the banner would appear, followed by the background and another part of the background.

4. Post your banner and background in this topic before November 1st.

5. Max. two entries per member. And you can only submit if you're a contributing member!

6.The winner will be determined by popular vote!

Show us what you got and your banner could be shining on top of the forum!

Sounds fun! There's a lot of talent in the forum, I'm looking forward to the entries. I have two questions - on my banner I don't have a slogan, is one necessary? And how should we think about the placement of the search box on the banner? Is it a set distance from the top right?

Ideally the slogan is there. So The answer is yes, it's necessary. Can you adapt your banner to include the slogan? But if it's restriction you too much then show us what you can do without it and we'll think about this more.

I discussed this with the staff and we concluded: the slogan is nice to have, but not mandatory. So it you can be more creative without the slogan then so it is. The EB logo is mandatory.

The reach box is a separate element from the banner. It's like on top of the banner, generated by the forum software, so don't worry about it.

I've wondered why GoH did not have its own banner, but I look forward to seeing that change! I would love to see someone incorporate a little from all the guilds into the banner. I certainly do not have the talent to help with this one but I look forward to seeing the entries from those who do!

For a quick little entry, what do you guys think?

[i took it down because it sucks and has nothing to do with GoH]

I have to say that this won't work. Not sure how serious you are with this entry, but here's why I say this:

1. It only features your sigfig. I think you could be a bit more representative of GoH as a whole, especially top contributors who've built MOCs. I'd do one big infamous GoH build (pick your favorite) from Book 1 or 2 and then throw in some recognizable faces.

2. The text doesn't work well with the background, which is very Nocty, so this could work better as Nocturnus banner, and is difficult to read. If you wanna use this as a personal banner, and you should because it's good if not good for GoH, you should take out all the little black specks where the text is.

That's my $0.02 anyways.

Ouch, that hurts. This was just a very quick entry which only took 10 minutes and as the contest says, two entries are allowed. I can go with a different approach featuring familiar faces but I don't want this to end up as a popularity contest. If anyone wants to donate a picture the most recognizable person from each guild I could use, I'd gladly do that but don't say I'm not taking this seriously because if I were, the outcome of it could have been a whole lot worse. But with my second entry, I will try to have a better entry.

As for an actual background, I have no clue how I'd find one suitable for all four guilds since the environments are all different. I can keep looking for a better one. And the reason it has the black specs everywhere is because my favorite style is using the ink blotched technique. I also don't have Photoshop like lots of people, I use Paint.NET and I would use GIMP but I downloaded that not that long ago so I'm still trying to get used to it since I've been using Paint.NET for about five years now.

Behemoth, this might be something to leave to the more experienced members of the Guilds or, if anything, something you should take your time on since this banner will welcome old and new members alike to the forums (also, it's not a race). Your 10-minute rendition isn't really representative of what goes on around here, plus outer space (I'm guessing those are moons and a nebula in your banner?) just doesn't seem to fit well with the medieval/fantasy theme of GoH, IMO. Don't feel hurt by Mccoyed's criticism, he makes a strong argument.

Sorry buddy, but criticism usually doesn't come fluffy. :P

Anyway, it's not about a popularity contest. It's just you're very new and haven't really built anything yourself yet. I think there are members of GoH, and I do not include myself by the way, who are better as representative "faces" for the forum. I'm way too new myself, you know, so this isn't a bid to put me in there. I'd prefer guild leaders, honestly. Either that or just use anonymous GoH-figs. I would do 4, one to represent each guild and they don't have to be sigfigs if you don't like that idea. Also, who said you weren't taking it seriously?

Why the background doesn't work isn't as important as the fact that it doesn't. You gotta use whatever tools you have and know how to use. I was just telling you what doesn't work, from my perspective.

While I agree with some of Mccoyed's comments, I would not do this: " I'd do one big infamous GoH build (pick your favorite) from Book 1 or 2 and then throw in some recognizable faces". What you want is a generic representation of the four guilds (possibly Varlyrio as well) like in Ecc's GoH banner add in his sig.

Also I would not count this first banner as an entry. An entry would be a finished banner, not a prototype.

Yeah. We'd all do different things. My example was just to show the difference between representing GoH as a whole and representing just oneself.

I know I haven't been a super active member for GoH due to time. I was curious, what exactly are the guild sigils? I know the guild colors, which would work well for being incorporated. But what exactly are the sigils? I've seen different people use different sigils for different guilds, but sometimes there isn't consistency, so I thought I would ask.

Don't overreact or anything.

Alright, I'll take down my entry because it sucks and I won't post another one.

Exactly! If I were you I'd just put the advice given to good use! And I must agree with most of the things said above. Like you said yourself, you've made it in just 10 minutes. Which I can't take serious either. Take your time with this one. You got two months and you're already posting a "prototype" within the first three hours.

If you browse the other subforums you can get some more inspiration and you can also see that none of them are grainy like the one you've made. And about Paint.net. I use it all the time. It's really powerful enough to create an awesome banner!

Okay, and I didn't realize it ends in two months, that changes everything! :excited:

Behemoth, if you are really a college student you should learn how to read closely otherwise you might get your butt kicked big time!
