Scouty Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Here it is, where I'm making it. This is a WIP thread. My camera is out of battery, so I will provide more pictures soon. The Lowdown: The first half of the mold just went PERFECT, no air bubbles...NOTHING!!!!! I did the second half...but guess what? IT WAS PERFECT! But....it broke :[ . So now I re-poured it and hoped it would work. However, I did manage to do a cast and it (besides being a little lobsided and a couple of air bubles...was very good...and it was a snug fit. I predict a very good replica...even has the Quote
Stauder Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 (edited) Nice, but I doubt you can produce them on a mass scale, as the demads for it are well.. mass... But nice work. Where can I buy stuff like that? Ie- The Silicone for the mold and what you made the Shako out of (resin?). -Goes to clone clone trooper helmets- Edited September 9, 2007 by Stauder@55 Quote
Scouty Posted September 9, 2007 Author Posted September 9, 2007 I could get a good number of these made, lots, so I imagine I can at least get a good number of these out for sale. Oh, the silicon stuff? It's called Allumilite, for a 'super pack', it comes with resin (creamy color), measuring cups, 1 Lb. Clay, 1 Lb RTV silicon...and some more...this'll go for 80$ You can get just the RTV silicon for 30$. Quote
woody64 Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 (edited) Very promising first result. At least it's the first custom molded shako we have seen so far. Andreas P.S.: I'm willing to order the first bulk of 20 pieces :'-) Edited September 9, 2007 by woody64 Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted September 9, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted September 9, 2007 That looks very promising. Could you make some close up pics from different sides of the shako? Quote
ZeekyBoogeyDoog Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 That looks great for a first try. I'm sure soon you'll get the bugs out of it. Quote
Scouty Posted September 9, 2007 Author Posted September 9, 2007 I'll try to get closer pics of this one. (The second mold broke, again, the same place, I'll have to do something about it.) Quote
Admiral_Jackson Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 This is fantastic! I have been waiting all summer to see your project. These are turning out very well, and it appears we can finally have some affordable solution to hatless imperial soldiers. Let us know when we can start placing orders with you, I know I will! *y* Quote
Scouty Posted September 10, 2007 Author Posted September 10, 2007 Thank you :capn: ! I tried a different method and it looks like it may work! Quote
Sir Norman Ray Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 HUZZAH! We have Shako's! Break out the rum! Flog the Pirates! Hire Weird Al to play music etc etc! Oh fabulous day, calloh callay! Shako's, were closer at last! Keep up the great work! *sweet* Quote
Capn Frank Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 (edited) IS, This is very promising :) Do you have any clone shakos? They're discussed in the fake shakos thread It might be easier to make a mold for this one with the flat feather. P Edited September 10, 2007 by phred Quote
Scouty Posted September 10, 2007 Author Posted September 10, 2007 Actually, the hole thing is PERFECT, the biggest problem I'm having is the locking mechanism, since it's so thin, it breaks easily, and it has alot of friction and is hard to pull off without breaking it. My latest mold proke, but I'm gonna try it again soon. Quote

My latest mold proke, but I'm gonna try it again soon. One silly question. Wouldn't it be easier to make a shako together with a head? Quote
Scouty Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 I would need to print the face on to the head, so...no ;-) . Quote
Capn Frank Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Just a question on my limited knowledge of resin casting: IS, do you spray anything onto the wall of your caste before placing in "the goo" for casting? In chemistry, we made bouncy balls and there was something sprayed onto the walls to prevent the ball from sticking onto the wall. P Quote
Scouty Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 The silicon rubber will attach itself to the first poured half. So Rubber-to-rubber mold release is needed. 3 coats brushed on :capn: Quote

Fordo Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 This Looks like a great start, from just coming. Can't wait till you've made a lot then I guess I'll start ordering. *y* Quote
The Mini Orchestra Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Ahhh, sweet, I was planning on doing this for myself so I wouldnt have to spend a million dollars on them! :-P One thing I might suggest, if you put a bit of sculpty on the insides where theres space not needed so when it gets casted its more solid so the sides wont break. (I got pics of a clone helmet im doing, if you need pic refrence to know what im talking about) -Aaron Quote
Scouty Posted October 14, 2007 Author Posted October 14, 2007 I thought it would be interesting to show this: BrickArms Mold Quote
woody64 Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I thought it would be interesting to show this: BrickArms Mold Very interesting, I thought that the molding forms BrickArms did, contain more items then two ... Did you make any further progress with the shakoos in the meantime ??? Andreas Quote
Scouty Posted October 15, 2007 Author Posted October 15, 2007 No. I'm not going to replicate the shakos anymore (they're just not suitable for this type of molding.) But I have other era-relevant ideas in mind. Quote
tedbeard Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Very interesting, I thought that the molding forms BrickArms did, contain more items then two ... What you are looking at here is a prototype mold which Will does himself to test out designs (hence the title of the picture: "Test Mold") . He brought several to show at NWBrickCon last weekend. His production molds are much bigger and contain several different weapons. Quote

Scouty Posted October 15, 2007 Author Posted October 15, 2007 I could do it, but I've tried three times already and all the molds broke at the same place. But I'm going toward accesories for the theme. Quote
