cossack225 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Hi all, I have done the unthinkable and burnt out a 9V Motor. Last year I experiemented with DCC and was please with the potential. However as I always tinker with everything I took the voltage limiter off preventing over voltage. My 8 car metroliner was happily running at 12 volts without much heat generation from the 9v motor, but at about 13V the motor shorted out and destroyed both the DCC chip and the motor. As both are prices about $45 AUD, it was very annoying. The casing for the motor is fine so I was wonderin if anyone has previously replaced just the actual motor as I have a few older 9v train motors where the motors are starting to wear out but the wheels and casings are still in pretty good nick. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I have tried various websites and hobby shops in Sydney. Thanks, Tim Quote
Sir E Fullner Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Have you tried looking in railbricks.com? It has many helpful tips in its magzines. Quote
JopieK Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Since you already opened the motor for DCC, I guess that it is easy for you to replace it, but finding the exact motor might be hard. Quote
bricks n bolts Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 From conrad-uk.com I got a 12v motor "RAILWAY X-TRAIN 263 HO" - article number "229021" - that fits as a replacement for old 4.5v or RC/PF motors, not sure about 9v. I've only tinkered with them, the problem I have is taking off the metal gear from the original motor pins and putting them on the new motor without damaging the gear teeth, still haven't got very far.. There is a Railbricks article, page 41 of issue 6, about using them in the old 4.5v '70s type motors, so I know they should work and they certainly fit into the casing of the RC/PF motors.. Alternatively, you could switch to using two PF motors and use modified decorative sides as pickups, Udo's suggestion here Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Since it's opened, I'd take the entire 9V assembly to a local hobby shop that specializes in trains and other small motored electronics. Let them suggest an adequate replacement motor Quote
bricks n bolts Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I've only tinkered with them, the problem I have is taking off the metal gear from the original motor pins and putting them on the new motor without damaging the gear teeth, still haven't got very far.. After saying this I felt the need to prove the new motors work in RC/PF casings and can happily report that they do and make very nice replacement 12v motors I'll write up a full report soon. Quote
JopieK Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Good work! Even if one doesn't have 12V (anymore, I used to have it), it is still relevant, since want could make a charger in the new PF motors. Quote
