Objective

Suggest a potential new sub-theme for the LEGO Pirates Theme.

The most popular suggestions will be included in a poll to determine the most suitable sub-theme.

What to do

Pitch your sub-theme in no more than two paragraphs per faction. Simply provide a name and a brief overview of what's invovled.

• You may pitch up to two faction for your sub-theme, but no more than two.
  
• You may pitch more than one sub-theme but for simplicity please do so in different posts.
  
• If you support an existing pitch or idea(s) from an existing pitch you may either:
  
  • Quote the entire pitch in a new post. Nothing more is required.
    
  • Write your own version of that pitch in a new post. Change as much or as little as you like.

What happens next?

Once the sub-theme is determined the project will progress to Phase 2, this involves the design of the sets, minifigures and storyline.

Rules

1. You must provide a name for the sub-theme and pitch the theme in no more than two paragraphs. Do not go into excessive detail about the backstory, characters or sets as this will be determined at a later stage of the project.

3. You may reaffirm a suggestion that has already been submitted and provide additional ideas.
   Suggestions with the most support will have a higher probability of making the poll but this will not be the only determining factor.

Non-military based sets have long been a popular suggestion for a potential new LEGO Pirates sub-theme so the Merchants introduce sets focused on trade and agriculture. After all, the pirates need to plunder heavily laden Cargo Fluyts to restock the cracker supply for their parrots.

The Smugglers are an opposing faction to the Merchants.

They rely on stealth and cunning to sneak in and out of the Merchant's Port van Brickhaven so they can sell their own brand of crackers! The Smugglers are based in their guild deep within the Forsaken Bayou. They have a unique system for concealing their insignia at a moment's notice so nobody suspects they're coming!

What We're NOT Looking For

• Ideas for sets which aren't part of an overall sub-theme. Once you've stated a sub-theme you may give a couple of set examples (not every set) which are part of that sub-theme, but don't post a random set wishlist without context.
  
• A sub-theme based on an existing license, brand or franchise. All sub-theme suggestions must be unique.
  
• To create our own brand or franchise like Ninjago or Legends of Chima. We won't have a television series to reinforce the story or characters so we won't be delving that deep into the fiction. Think contemporary City and Castle - we're aiming to create the LEGO Pirates equivalent.
  
• Blending pirates with other genres, so Space Pirates, Steampunk, modern Pirates, etc. are beyond the project scope as the sub-theme must fit within the context of the original LEGO Pirates theme. This means:
  
  • It must be a historic sub-theme set sometime during the 16^th and 18^th centuries (approximately 1500-1760) and the technology depicted must be relevant to the period. 100% history accuracy isn't necessary but excessive creative liberties cannot be taken.
    
  • It must be based within the Caribbean, Central America or the home country of a nation involved in the exploration or settlement of that region,E.g. English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, etc. So ideas like Barbary Corsairs, Asian Pirates, Napoleonic Wars, etc. are too far removed.

Subtheme Name: "Pirate Legends"

Premise: The pirates and the imperials compete with one another on various fronts for both treasure and magical "artifacts". These artifacts could be central to the story, somewhat like in Pharaoh's Quest, or they can be the subjects of specific sets. These battles are faced on multiple fronts. Sometimes (in order to produce a "HQ" set), this would be at one faction's home turf, where the treasure is already possessed by one faction and the other would try to steal it. Other times, the hunt for treasure would take place in very isolated regions, with the two factions having to contend with traps or natural obstacles as well as each other. Islanders may or may not be involved in some of these scenarios. A supernatural element would also be present, but not to a large extent. One set may, for example, feature mermen/mermaids or a Kraken, but these supernatural aspects need not be as prominent as the conflict between the two factions themselves.

Design: The subtheme's smallest sets would generally feature the treasure and/or obstacles as primary components, though the opposing factions may also use transportable cannons or traps against each other. Larger sets would feature small "bases" and ships for each faction. The treasure and the treasure's surroundings would still be featured, but less prominently. The largest sets would hopefully include one large pirate ship and maybe a large base set on a rocky, tropical island. Unlike the previous non-licensed pirate theme, all of the ships and bases will demonstrate having gone through a little bit of wear and tear, especially for the pirates, to emphasize their sort of rag-tag character. Sails may be torn, for example, and bases would be overgrown with vegetation. Overall, the sets would look a little more natural and realistic than in the last theme. Finally, that brings us to the various factions. The pirates are stylized pretty similar to past themes, except perhaps with more variation among their attire than in the last one. They are a group of eager, adventurous treasure-hunters and explorers. They come into contact with the imperials, who desire the treasures for themselves and as such quickly come into conflict with the pirates. The imperials are also quite similar to how they appear in past themes, except for the above-mentioned addition of detail and some slight run-down of their assets. Potentially, there would also be a third, minor group (not prominent enough to be counted as a "faction"), that is included in one of the sets for diversity. Perhaps an even more run-down group of pirates, or a supernatural element, or islanders. (Edit: David's "Smugglers" idea also sounds pretty cool; perhaps it could be applied as this last group.)

Anyway, that's my suggestion. Please tell me if there's anything I should reformat/change, as I did go a bit astray from the example given. (Response given in the Questions & Answer thread - Mister Phes)

My idea was for 'Smugglers', so the wind is taken out of my sails a bit that it it's been used as an example, but I'll pitch it anyway, because I've been waiting for so long to do so:

The Smugglers

The Smugglers sail in modified merchant ships that outwardly appear to be normal, but have hidden panels and hatches that give access to weapons and secret cargo. They are rebelling against the corrupt Imperial Forces, who take the liberty of searching and seizing goods from innocent ship under the excuse of 'tax collection', and are little more than pirates themselves. If The Smugglers can distribute enough arms, maybe they can create an uprising against the Empire? The Smugglers used to be honest merchants, but being forced into this lifestyle has affected their wardrobe and ships to be more bold and colourful.

The Imperial Forces

The Imperial Forces have been given too much liberty by the Empire. Their dress code has become lax, often having tears in their uniforms, their buttons undone and their faces unshaven, and their ships and quarters have become decorated with their dishonestly taken 'tax' plunder, with valuable paintings and furniture where other armies might live a more spartan lifestyle. They will do anything to stop the secret rebellion the Smugglers are preparing.

El Conquistadores

As the colonial wars raged on, the Royal Navy felt they needed to ramp up their military presence in the costal waters, especially the Spanish trade routes, where dozens of Navy ships had previously had battles with the cruel Conquistadors. Taking with them, letters of marque - each signed and sealed by His Majesty himself, the Admiral went around the Carribbean to find the dastardly outlaws he would soon deputize to help protect the King's intrests in the region. The wicked pirates would recieve pardons for their crimes if they promise to use their equipment, vessels, and "talents" to serve the King and defend the colonies.

Honkolo Island

Pirates

Captain Bricky and his crew have gotten hold of an ancient map leading to an unknown treasure Island, they set out with their ship to recover the treasure.

However, the Island is inhabited...

Islanders

Onka Tonka is the king of the Islanders, long have they lived peacefully on their beautiful island but not anylonger...

The pirates are after their gold, the Islanders do their best to set up traps to capture these greedy pirates and protect the treasure...

Terrors Of The Deep

The pirates are being attacked by the mythical creatures of the deep. Mermaids lure them to their doom, The Kraken stirs from the deep, the Great White whale can break a ship in two, the Leviathan coils around unsuspecting ships and anyone that gazes upon the acursed Flying Dutchman will never make port again.

The islanders.

The islanders are a sometimes fierce and sometimes peaceful tribe-this means sets could appeal to both genders while having good designs with lots of parts in new colours which is sure to please the AFOLs.

Sets with models similar to those of the Goblin King Battle set would look great on display, plus the sets could include various pirates to embark on a quest to raid the land of native King Ku Keetongu and his fellows!

Well those are my two paragraphs.

By the way, I have started designing model sketches for this theme on LDD. I hope to make more soon!

Shipwrecked

A large pirate ship has been torn apart by a massive storm (or maybe a sea monster?), with various members of the crew and pieces of the ship washing ashore on several different islands. In order to survive in their new surroundings, the pirates have built an array of rafts, weapons, and shelters out of the remains of the ship combined with the trees, rocks, and other debris found on the islands.

All sets in this theme would be 2-in-1: a structure or vehicle (e.g. tree fort, weapons cart, fishing boat) cobbled together from the wreckage for the main model, and a B-model that uses the parts to build a section of the original ship. This way, one could collect all the sets and combine them into the pre-wrecked ship.

The Treasure Fleet

After having conquered El Dorado, the city of gold, the imperials are faced with the challenge of shipping the vast wealth of the new world, back to Europe, through pirate infested waters. Massive ships were built, armed to the teeth, to try to fend off those who would claim the treasure for themselves, including pirates, privateers, and rival nations. Sometimes however, the large ships were decoys, and the wealth was sent in a smaller escort ship instead. What would be your strategy to get the treasure home to your king without losing it. An imperial governor could make his name, or lose his head pending the success or failure of his fleet.

The Pirates

A pirate captain strolls into the tavern in a pirate haven and states that he intends to attack the treasure fleet. After the laughter dies down and people realize he is serious, some decline out of fear, but some accept the challenge and join his crew or add their own ships to the pirate fleet. Never before has a leader had the charisma to unite the pirates, with the promise of the greatest bounty any of them would ever know... His charisma extends to the ladies, and he has an inside lead on the movement of the treasure fleet - the Governor's daughter has fallen in love with him.

Possible Sets

The city of gold, El Dorado. Stone covered in jungle vines, with gold and jewels everywhere. Perhaps some native residents.

A large ship - pride of the imperial fleet, 2 tiers of cannons and a hold laden with chests.

A smaller imperial schooner - built for speed, to evade capture and get the treasure home.

A pirate brave enough, or crazy enough to amass a fleet to attack the treasure fleet with - a ramshackle assortment of salvaged sloops and schooners and a mangy crew to sail them.

I believe the story line also lends itself to some port town buildings, but I will leave that to the lego team's imagination.

I really like the idea of the wrecked ship and how you could combine each set to rebuild the ship.

I think a second faction should be included. Islanders might be a good choice.

The B model could also have an island (or part of a bigger island) so that you could still play with the sets when you have rebuilt the ship.

Explorers - a group of explorers who are convinced that there must be undiscovered riches in the Indies, backed by European nation who missed out on the first wave of exploration. They have small fast ships to outrun pirates and rival European powers who might want to put a stop to their explorations. Some of the expedition are scientists looking for new animals, rare orchids which might bring as much fame and glory as discovering gold. Those explorers hunting for gold were happy to promote the interests of their scientific crew as rival imperial powers and pirates were far less interested in a scientific expedition. The explorers may form temporary alliances with some of the pirates, other imperial forces or islanders.

Possible sets:

Small ship

Small set with explorers with animals, plants, magnifying glass, maps etc

Hidden cave with treasure

Mutiny - a discovery of gold has led to open mutiny in the explorers crew

Jungle river crossing

Islanders - similar to GodtShep's idea they would prefer peace but be willing & able to defend themselves when attacked. Not limited to small islands hey would be encountered by the explorers as they ventured high into the hills in search of treasure. They would be skillful negotiators able to strike a deal with the pirates for their mutual defense against the imperial forces and provide guides to the explorers as long as they didn't think the explorers were after their gold. However the pirates' and explorers' lust for gold meant these alliances never lasted long.

Really like this idea. Some of my favorite pirate sets as a child were ones that had things that looked like they'd been made out of bits of a sunk ship. It'd be cool if you could combine the sets even if you didn't have them all - e.g. if you had sets A-E you could build the original ship, but if you had A-C or D & E you could build a smaller ship or something else.

SubTheme: Merchant Adventurers

Ships and trading posts owned and operated by The Company of Merchant Adventurers is under constant threat from the Armada de Verde as they sail the Spanish Main.

Faction 1: The Company

Protected by Company soldiers (bluecoats?) the CMA trading vessels explore the islands and coastlines of Bricquador in search of any opportunity for easy profit.

Faction 2: The Armada

A collection of pirate crews under the command of Capitan Juan de Verde, notorious scourge of the Spanish Main. The greedy pirates sail in vessels small and large with a wide variety of weapons and national costumes of these mixed crews.

The colony

A European-inspired faction arrives in the new world, with the aim of establishing a colony. One mid-sized set could be a “starter colony” including a woodcutters hut, stonemason and guardpost. Other buildings purchased individually to build upon this, such as a Tavern, Garrison and Trading Post. Potentially, some smaller (crucially affordable) trading vessels could visit the colony also, along with a return of the gunboats defending the harbour.

The pirates

As the colony prospers, those pesky pirates will arrive on the shore. The colonists will not give up their valuables easily though and have come up with imaginative hiding places in each building to store them. Each set could include one pirate, one or more colonists, hidden valuables and potentially booby traps. Of course, the pirates will need a ship to arrive at the colony...

Sub-Theme Suggestion: Privateers

Faction #1: Privateers

Sometimes pirates are the good guys. With Letters or Marque, the rich and the poor sail the seas seaking fame and fortune.

--A large set could be a Privateer vessel, armed with cannon and steal, but manned by a crew which is more civilalized and captained by a weathly lord (general feel would be similar to the Imperial Flagship, but with a civilian crew and neutral colors).

--A medium set would be a smaller, more rundown ship manned by a rougher looking crew. This way customers could choose between the underdogs or the privelaged.

--Small sets would be outposts similar to Sabre Island where the privateers can wait and look for the next target of opportunity

Faction #2: The East Brick Trading Co.

Established by one of the leading nations in the world, the company has become the target of privateers from a rival civilization.

--Large set would be a port/harbor with a dock and warehouse. Little armament would be present outside of a few company soldiers.

--Medium sets would include a court to try pirates/privateers, and merchant ships (unarmed or lightly armed)

--Small sets would consist of exotic locations for new trading goods (merchants in pineapple grove, jungle, beach, etc)

Where there be dragons!

In an age not all that long ago, on shores some now call home, mysteries were unknown and places unexplored.

Join the brave Imperial Lego crew on board the HMS Bricktanica as they explore the uncharted areas of the map. Finding unknown lands and battling the forces of the seas. "Quick lookout for the reef, those rocks are sharp we must get out of this storm!" Taking shelter in a small cove they find untold wealth of long lost tribes.

Not far away are the Pirates lead by Captain Drake, who wants all the new found treasure to himself. Captain Drake was hidden in the storm but knew that the Bricktanica had taken shelter in a cove where some of his mates were collecting the gold. Worried about his long hidden base the Dragons Nest, just a few hours sail away, he must scare off the Imperials with his fire breathing ship the Berserk Basilisk.

What other mystery's await the two factions? Is the treasure cursed (combine with PotC)? Are there real dragons among the ruins (Combine with castles sets)?

Legend of the Lost City

When former Imperial Captain, Captain Quick learns about the Legend of the Lost City, he seizes a ship of his own and signs on a mysterious rag-tag crew of Pirates to help him hunt down the ancient artifacts, which serve as a map, as well as keys to the city. However, the artifacts are still guarded by the local Islanders who wish their sacred city of gold to remain hidden from outsiders, as well as a monstrous sea guardian. Captain Quick hopes that no one else learns of the Legend or tries to find the artifacts before him...

I really think think that this can allow for some nostalgic sets, while capturing elements of other recent successful Lego themes, while allowing room for more factions to join the hunt, and therefore the theme has room for grow.

There have been some very good entries so far. Keep it up!

Sub Theme: Pirate Kingdom

A caribbean archipelago inhabited by merchants, buccaneers, slaves and natives is revolting against it's oppressive Rulers.

Good Guys aka The Colonials

For way too long people of the Archipelago have listened to wishes of their Ruler, who didn't care to listen to them. After all it's been them who fought for this land, for it's treasuers and defended it against common enemies.

Now, angered by the Regime's demands and united - merchants, assimilated natives, and even slaves, and buccaneers and pirates - all with a wish for freedom, decide to stand.

The battle will not be fought on equal terms as all the Colonials have is their militia, lots of irregulars and lots more courage.

Having only few weak outposts they have to transform them into fortresses. Having only a small merchant/pirate fleet they have to revamp it into their navy. Having a force of volunteers of mixed races, lacking standarized uniforms and weaponry... they have to remodel it as their army.

Still - they have the advantage of knowledge of their lands and jungles and therefore a partisan warfare, ambushes and traps, is what can give victory to their side.

Bad Guys aka The Regime

An absolute Ruler will not accept any revolt in his lands and will not listen to the rebels' demmands. A nation should remain obedient at any times and any cause. Therefore an outstanding Expeditionary Force is sent to the crush the Archipelago and bring back the "peace", whatever the cost. Veteran soldiers, powerfull navy, perfectly equiped infantry and fearsome cavalery should be no match for a bunch of "peasants". Led by cruel yet greedy generals, brought here by the wish to fill their own pouches, they will show no mercy and stop only after every "local scum" will be turned into a skeleton or a slave, and every house into a pile of wood and bricks...

Both factions have to act fast - as it seems that in an unlikely event of success other archipelagos might revolt as well, and so Other Powers are interested in devouring... the Pirate Kingdom.

So that's what on my mind. A mixture of different ideas ( merchants, natives, pirates ) combined in a new exciting faction, brings back an atmosphere of classic pirate utopias known from different stories, novels and flicks ( Crimson Pirate, Jean Lafitte's Barataria, Madagascar's Libertalia and others ) to the XVII/XVIII century Caribbean.

Possibilities for great sets ( cities, ports, outposts, ships, ambushes, hide outs, prison, wrecks, colonial "partisan army" and irregulars etc ) are limitless.

SubTheme: The Haunted islands.

Pirates

Fearless Morgan and his crew of cutthroats are searching of the treasures that Roger Redbeard forgot to recollect before he dead. unfortunately for them, they have to face the ghosts of all the OTHER crews that had the same idea.

The Ghosts

Spyglass John spent years searching for the lost loot, but alas he and his crew where lost in a storm before they could find it, but even now there still out there looking though every crack and crevasse in hope of finding a single coin of Rogers treasure. and there sure as heck not gonna let some nosy newcomer like Morgan find it first!

i was thinking instead of just skeletons (which unfortunately have been overused by Lego lately) we could get minifigures based on the look and colour scheme of the Lord of the rings ghosts. but maybe mixed with glow in the dark skeleton pieces.

sets could include

- a ship for Morgans crew, a nice two masted one similar to the Black Seas Barracuda. has a lot of lanterns to navigate through the fog.

-a Terrifying ghostly galleon with tattered sails for the ghosts, a three masted vessel like the Potc Queen Annes Revenge. grey or greenish hull, maybe glow in the dark pieces.

-bases for the pirates that feel very makeshift and shipwrecked

-caves and underwater caverns filled with treasure!... and skeletons of course.

-booby trapped bunkers and buildings for the pirates to explore. maybe a small castle by the sea side that was once used as a pirates lair.

Per your suggestion, here's my idea!

Dorado the Explorado and his scurvy crew consisting a talking monkey and other talking animals have set sail! Dorado is looking for lost treasure on Espanol Island and he is sure to find it with his talking map, cutlass, hat, and ship! Only problem is that when he arrives on Espanol Island, the key to finding the treasure is saying the right key words in Spanish! Will he know what to say when the time comes?

Also, Dorado the Explorado has to watch out for the Slimy Snipers. The Slimy Snipers inhibit Espanol Island and the neighboring "Learning Sea." They are known for stealing people's treasure and lunch! If Dorado is not careful she might just leave Espanol Island empty handed and hungry.

How's that?

Haha, in all seriousness, we have some excellent suggestions so far! Most of what I have been thinking has already been suggested -which is a good thing. Keep up the good work!

Sub theme: Trade Union (or a more sexy name)

I'm thinking about of fleet of trade ships and trading posts, similar to the famous Dutch trading company VOC. This stands for Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, roughly translated as "Dutch East India Company" or "United East India Company". There have been so many (too many) pirates ships produced by LEGO but never a real trading faction. When I look to the success of 'normal life' sets in the medieval time frame (medieval market village, etc.) I'm pretty convinced that also in the world of Pirates such civilian sets would be doing well. At least I would buy them :).

There can be no pirates if there are no innocent trade ships to hunt, attack and capture!

Adventures in the Orient

Faction One: The Natives

Native to the exotic regions of the orient, this faction is based around Chinese or Japanese people, whose land is being invaded and exploited by the Dutch East India Company. Some are eager to trade in return for peace and protection; others stubbornly defend their lands against the foreigners. Great treasures and secrets are waiting to be revealed in the lucrative lands beyond the sea.

Faction Two: Dutch East India Company

The Dutch East India Company are looking for new riches to plunder. After sailing thousands of miles across the ocean, their numbers are few and their opposition fierce. Dreading to return to the motherland empty handed, the desperate captains of the fleet must establish rich trading colonies to justify the expedition...or die trying!

This sub-theme could include civilian sets and orient vessels and pirate ships- perhaps similar to the ones seen in Pirates of The Caribbean. The Natives could be expanded to display imaginative and authentic Asian architecture on land and at sea.

Pirate Attack

The Pirates:

The pirates have been plundering the local islands and villages and have ambushed any ship foolish enough to venture forth into the open seas. Even the smugglers aren't safe from these attacks. As the ships have become more careful and the towns have become more watchful, the pirate attacks have become even bolder, with many fearing for a large attack in the near future.

The pirates would have a large ship, possibly included with a small portion of the town for them to loot. They would also have several smaller ships ranging from the size of a rowboat to a raft to a ship like the one included in Lake-town Chase. They could also possibly have a treasure cave or land based hideout.

The Pirate Hunters/Villagers/Smugglers

Fearful for their valuables and lives, the villages have banded together against the threat of the pirate crew. Even the smugglers have joined, as they have also been looted by the pirates. The new team has sworn to hunt down the pirates and bring them to justice. They operate from a smuggler's boat (smaller than the pirate ship) which has been converted into a war ship disguised as a trade ship in order to lure the pirate fleet to them and capture them. (The ship would be able to be customized into any of these three modes.)

The Pirate Hunters' main base would be their ship, and some other sets could include small skirmishes with the pirates. Parts of the town could also be included as the site for these battles. Hidden caves and jails to contain the pirates could be included with a pirate or two to break out of prison.

SubTheme: The Lost City

Deep in the jungles, lost to history, a legendary city full of gold and gems beyond all imagining lies waiting to be rediscovered.

Faction 1: The Buccaneers

Sometimes partners, sometimes competitors, a pair of pirate captains lead their loyal crews in a race to find the treasures of the fabled Lost City.

Faction 2: The Natives

Respecting the homes of the ancestors and fiercely protective of their lands, the natives of Bricquador lay traps and ambushes for those foolish enough to seek a way through to the City of the Gods.
