How rare are red #3 connectors ?

Like they cant be too rare, I mean like even I have some.

Very rare, but....you can buy second hands sets somewhat cheaply if you really need them. The most obvious choice is 8141 which has 2 of them. They mostly appeared in Racers sets.

I have seen them for sale brand new at €7.50 for just one!!

Same reasons as described above. If they already have a bin of gray connectors sitting around, they won't pay to make a batch of red just to make the model look nicer. Just a cost trade-off. It is not that red costs any more than gray, it is just related to what they have in stock.

That must be why #42034 in DBG is soo rare! http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=32034&colorID=85&in=A

I bought 8649 and got 3 of them :-)

Do some variants of x928cx1 come with different spring rates or are they all a ridiculously powerful and unyielding as the 2 orange ones I got this morning?

I have 3, all different colors (yellow, orange, and black) and they are all very stiff.

Same here, I have few of them of different colors, and they're equally stiff.

Plastic in different colors have different specs, that is one could shrink more than another, heat required to melt is different too. This is what I became aware of recently. It just cannot be "one fits all".

This is true if the the plastics with various colors have DIFFERENT chemical formulations. From my understanding, the different colors are dyes only and as such they do not really 'bond' with the base matrix. That said, if each color requires a different mold, that becomes a very expensive undertaking. Though in the end, I bet the variations in shrinkage and else are all very small and must enable one to use the SAME molds.

This year we are being 'spoiled' (or maybe will be) with a collection of new Technic parts. Like many on here I have few ideas of course, but was thinking what one could possibly do with the NEW parts, that was simply impossible with the OLD parts. The new clutch gear and selector come to mind of course, and in this case the question is VERY simple:

1. Why on earth would you want to couple such gear from both sides and 'sandwich' it between two driving rings?

18946.jpg This gear can be mated/engaged on both sides with 18947.jpg.

2. Does anyone know of an application where the above gear would be useful?

3. What other ideas can you build with the NEW parts that are not possible with the Current?

I'm betting many answers to #3 will be about the long gear racks and pneumatics.

The gear is most likely double-sided so that people can't screw up and place the gear in backwards... I know of people who have placed the old gear in backwards and then had to tear apart the entire model to fix it...

1. I think it is "couplable" on both sides to prevent kids from installing them the wrong way.. While I highly doubt any of us here on the forum have had a problem with it, I think the younger kids can make the mistake. The DBG one-sided clutch gears always had a small picture in the instructions indicating which way to put it, I imagine for the same reason :sweet:

2. If it's symmetrical side-to-side, it looks like it can hang snugly on a pin, something neither of the one-sided variants can

EDIT: Beaten to it by Boratko :hmpf_bad::laugh:

That gear/driving ring combo also has a couple other advantages over the old one... For example, the changeover catch will not slip past the engagement point because the driving ring does not engage into it quite as deep as the old style..

Why don't we have one topic that discussed the new parts instead of two separate ones?

That was about pneumatics only but fair enough, can you merge the topics?

The new gearbox parts will be used in gearboxes and drive trains.

That much I already knew . The question, as I stated above is: What do the new parts enable you to build that was NOT possible with the old parts. The reason for the new gear, is, per a couple of answers, to make assembly 'idiot-proof'.

Agreed, the old one would disengage because it has triangular 'wedges'. The new one had straight wedges. Not to turn this into 'criticizing' the new parts but, if this was the sole purpose, they could have simply redesigned the old driving ring and keep it 2L long. Unless it was done for ease of differentiation between old/new.

I would like to invent a new type of Mobile crane which hasn't even been invented in real life, and also make a hybrid supercar powered by xl motors and and a pneumatic engine.

have you managed to spot a niche where current crane designs don't work? I'm intrigued! I'm sure Mammoet, Liebherr, Grove etc would all be interested too if you can demonstrate a prototype.

As a matter of fact, I hate the new gears. Technic should be the one line where parts do not need to be idiot proof. Also, for no particular reason, they are bright, screaming, sticking out like a sore thumb, red! I've seen these in other sets completely replacing the older ones, so why make them red? However, I do like the new, odd length transmission parts. I actually think that they should have been introduced a long time ago, back when Technic went studless. These parts will make doing anything involving switching gears much easier. I think I will just be getting the new axle joiner, and driving ring, as I have no use for the new clutch gears.

Yeah I agree, the red color does suck....

The clutch fins are thicker in the new red gears than they are in the older DBG gears, so they can handle a bit more strain...

Another thing that could be useful with the new gear is that you engage the gear with one driving ring while using another driving ring as an extension on the other side of the gear that could then lead to another clutch gear if you needed to having 2 things moving at once in different areas off of the same switch...

There's no need for yet another part discussion topic. I will merge this with the General Part Discussion topic.

Never did that with a model, but did that with MOC's! :sweet:

anyone else spot technic parts in new colours from 2015 set.....

i picked up a few of those black pneumatic T bars.

Black T bars are from 2014

42039 has a lot of pieces in light green. Except that, there are few useful pieces:

10197 in Black

56908 in Lime

30602 in Trans-Clear and Trans-Red

15458 in Orange

Part #30395 in now in Dark Red: http://www.bricklink...colorID=59&in=A

Part #56902 is now available in Red: http://www.bricklink...&colorID=5&in=A

The Ecto 1 set from 2014 has alot of Metallic Silver parts that are new for that colour: http://www.bricklink...v.asp?S=21108-1

The engine fan part used in 420030 can now be found in Flat Silver: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=41530&colorID=95&in=A

I have a question. Why does LDD have two tan 20 tooth double conical gears in its palette? I also noticed this when I checked the inventory for 8285 (2009) and 42030 (2014) on the Lego website, and it showed that the 20 tooth tan gear for 8258 was out-of-stock while the 20 tooth tan gear for 42030 was in stock; this means they are different gears. Was there a change in this toothed wheel? Was this a material change, like, the new gears are made of different quality plastic? I hope not, but I heard that the quality for Lego in general is getting more cheap/worse, so these new 20 tooth gears may not be as good as the old ones. Please, prove me wrong XD

Sometimes TLG refresh or create a brand new mold when the old one wears out, or they make revisions to the design of a part. A recent example is part #2444....it got a mold revision and new part # 10247
