nine09nueve Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 My not so interesting Uruk army. See - not so bad! 5 different types of weapon carrying uruk hai and 2 different personality models... keep (le)going keep (le)growing Much love D Quote
Super Goblin Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Well, we all knew it had to happen eventually. I wish I could say I had this many Spartans, but unfortunately only Lee Jones on MOCpages can claim that honour at the moment. Here he has 301 Spartans in his envy-inducing photo of King Leonidas and his 300 soldiers. Considering how hard these little dudes are to find, this is a very dedicated effort, and I bet he spent a pretty penny or two to get them all! This post is from 2010, I wonder if this guy still has this many Spartans? Quote
Shroffy123 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I remember trying to collect those guys. Only managed to get 10. Quote

nine09nueve Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Thats truly impressive army of Spartans, but too repetitive on my opinion :) Yah - you see this is what I mean... I have no idea about it's historical accuracy / authenticity... this maybe exactly what a Spartan Army would have looked like - with no possibility for variation. Fine. But... as an army... no - it's a collection in my opinion. If we forget about the historical side of things and treat it as a fantasy/medieval/castle-type army then you can't argue much that it is particularly well thought out... it's just the same over and over except for the general/leader with a different shield and sword. Quote
Blazej_Holen Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I think , that even if look for historical accuracy there should be some variations at least with differetn headpieces, or maybe shields and cloaks. Differetn colour variation and some coloured shields (I know it requires some moding of existing pieces). I like massive armies, but for display and maybe for MOCs and use is better to have maybe smaller armies but with some variaty in it. For example I have army of 29 Rohans together. I used official Rohan soldier torso, then some chainmail torsos from castle line, and then CMF Hun warrioir torsos alon with some villagers torsos. Then I used different types of head gear - grey rohan helmets, dark brown rohan helmets without printing, some hairpieces and old classic castle hoods.. For shields I used vking shields, hun shields, rohan shields and others (like from CMF highlander figure) and voila, its nice and accurate army of Rohan from LOTR movie. I will post some pictures later when I put them all together :) But this is good way how to create some nice armies which are maybe small but nice with some mocing and inovation :) That army of spartans requires only a bunch of money to effort all those figs. I couldn't agree more - creative thinking and colour matching is deffo the way to go IMHO! I would love to see your units whenever you're ready Much love D Quote

Rogue Angel Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Variation is nice, but not necessary. It is still an Army even if they are clones. Army building Phases 1. Initial Assembly (Most costly Stage) a. Acquire the 1-3 (typically) torsos or out-of-the-set minifigures for your army b. Acquire the helmets or/hairpieces (some of these are often filler because you don't know what looks best until you've tried different options, and once you find the best option, you find you don't have enough.) c. Add heads. (filler heads for 25-75% typically) d. Acquire the weapons (filler weapons. swords/axes, bows/crossbows, and some assorted other weapons. You won't be able to narrow this down until you have finalized your total number of each torso/minifigure type. Steps b-d can take place in any order, depending on what is on hand. 2. Establishing your main types of forces. (This is often the final step for many builders/collectors) a. Acquire all the torsos/minifigures you need to represent your different forces within your army- archers, and your footman, and your pikemen, etc. This may also be the phase in which officers are defined. (Typically the torsos are what govern these numbers for me, as they are usually the hardest to find and most expensive). b. Acquire the necessary Helms/headpieces and weapons to outfit all of your troops types. (At this stage, I will typically make final decisions on which helms and weapons each force will use) c. Match the legs and acquire any not in your stock. (Black and gray legs are often the standard legs I use until I can finalize my fig design. They go well with most things. At this point though, I try to coordinate between the torsos and an overall unity to the army as a whole.) d. Capes, Capes, Capes. Capes make a huge difference, but they are SOOOOO expensive. (This is the one step that may get moved to Stage 3 for me due to costs alone.) Steps b -d can be switched in order, but Step a pretty much always come first for me. 3. Customization - This is the stage that can be very long and drawn out, and potentially expensive. I am often stuck in this stage waiting for Lego to create new pieces to fit my units(Drow). This is also a much less important stage initially. I know that once I have the core figures in place, they look good enough to display, and I can come back and any point at not have to worry about skyrocketing Bricklink costs as I will have much more freedom of part usage. a. Add in some torso variety. This can be done through new torsos, arms or just hands. Establish officers if not done already. (I do very little torso variation within a force unless the entire force will be varied, in which case this would have been addressed already in Stage 2.) b. Add in some helm/headpiece variety. (I typically only alter hair and some hoods in a unified force) c. Add in some weapon variety. (Again, my unified forces will typically have unified weapons) d. Add in some head variety. (This is the most critical step for customization IMO. It's also the one I have accomplished the least in all my armies. The head is what defines the character as an individual.) All this being said, remember that the point of this thread is to "Post your Army", and that can be 300 CMF Spartans or 50 unique and individual Dwarven warriors (Thank you to the Hobbit for making this possible), so be accepting of everyone's armies however they wish to assemble and present them. It is much more costly to make a completely individualized army, and most of our builders can't afford to spend the money on it. Quote

Gary The Procrastinator Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Here are some of mine. My faction on Lands of Roawia RPG is Lenfald, and these are what I call Lenfel Scout Snipers (built off the US Marine Corps reconnaissance unit concept). Click on the photo for the story on them: I also have some example minifigs for Lenfald's warrior class: Quote
nine09nueve Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Here are some of mine. Love them! I'm new to all this GoH so haven't quite got my head round all that stuff... but I love the mix of uniformity and individuality throughout the LSS. And super work on the Banner - it took me forever to figure out the best way to get that attached (the Rohan banner is the reverse of practically all other clipped banners I could see!) much love D Quote

Moyalmas Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 After some time, here's my Crusader/Lion army (almost complete). The Castle is still a WIP, but i couldn't wait to post some pics :) Some were left out (no more space), but some are inside the castle eheheheh Hope you enjoy Quote
TheLegoDr Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I love classic castle armies. That was my childhood era, so it always brings me back. I have a modest collection of the main groups back then, but haven't tried army building them since. I should consider it again. I find myself looking back at my childhood LEGO more than modern LEGO..interesting indeed. Keep up the good work. I wouldn't want to meet them on the battlefield...until I get my Black Knights army going strong. Quote
