Alex the Great Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 That's a simply stunning map Viceroy! You've done the guild proud. It's a preview? Do you plan on naming towns and that stuff?
Viceroy Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 That's a simply stunning map Viceroy! You've done the guild proud. It's a preview? Do you plan on naming towns and that stuff? Thank you very much! Yes theres still towns and fortifications to be added. I'm currently undergoing a bit of experimentation to see whether I should put the names directly on the map or to use numbered icons like the Avalonian map.
Haltiamieli Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Our map looks astounding already! It's interesting to compare it to the previous draft. That volcano is an interesting addition. Are you planning to colour the map in some way? If not, the compass rose looks a bit out of place now.
Viceroy Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 (edited) Our map looks astounding already! It's interesting to compare it to the previous draft. That volcano is an interesting addition. Are you planning to colour the map in some way? If not, the compass rose looks a bit out of place now. Yes I added a few more things like lakes, fjords in the north and a volcano to give people more building options. I figured that a lone volcano surrounded by a plain of ash and rock could somehow fit into Mitgardian mythlogy or culture - forges or temples (dont forget minichallenge no. 4 chaps!) for example. And you're right, I'll either get a compass that matches the existing colour scheme or convert the entire map into a aged-parchment colour scheme. Construtive feedback like this is really appreciated by the way so dont be afraid to suggest any reasonable improvements. Edited December 6, 2011 by Viceroy
Sirens-of-Titan Posted December 6, 2011 Author Posted December 6, 2011 Ah what a beauty it is Viceroy! Apart from the things we talked about I'd say we have our realms' final form! Masterful drawing and a great sense of conserved style. Bravo!
Basiliscus Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 That is one hot (pardon the pun... ) map Viceroy! I love the level of detail and the design around the edges takes it to the next level. Fantastic. Greetings from the South
NiceMarmot Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Great map! Really looking good. I love the border. I've been meaning to add a border to the Kaliphlin map; you've really chosen a nice one. Did you hand-draw all the forests? If so, that's a lot of work, and if not, good job making them look that way.
Fat Tony Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 PS. If anyone can suggest a more Nordic font that would be appreciated. I'm also looking for a few good map symbols for villages towers etc. Great map! Reminds me of the maps from Tolkien's books. Just needs some "antiqueing" and it'll be perfect. Here are some suggestions for fonts: http://www.dafont.com/viking.font http://www.dafont.com/piper-pie.font Those seemed the most "nordic" to me.
NiceMarmot Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 PS. If anyone can suggest a more Nordic font that would be appreciated. I'm also looking for a few good map symbols for villages towers etc. I've got these downloaded. They're mostly Runic fonts, but still readable. There are plenty of runic fonts, but most are unreadable in English because they're accurately portraying runes. You want a fake one that looks runic but is really for Latin characters. http://www.fontspace.com/apostrophic-lab/alfabetix http://www.dafont.com/pr-viking-01.font http://www.dafont.com/odinson.font http://www.dafont.com/vids-norse.font And these are not really Runic, but have a good fantasy look that might work for you: http://www.dafont.com/hobbiton-brush-hand.font http://www.dafont.com/etruscan.font
Viceroy Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Hey NiceMarmot, thanks for the suggestions, I've used one of Fat Tony's for now but I'll have to check them out over the weekend!
Haltiamieli Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 You want a fake one that looks runic but is really for Latin characters. Problem with some fake runic fonts is that they can make people who do know real runic alphabet(s) slightly frustrated And I think Viceroy's map looks a bit too sophisticated for rather harsh/crude runic fonts anyway. Though I quite like the look of PR Viking, and maybe Odinson too. Vid's Norse seems to be based too closely on real runes, for example I doubt most people could easily associate M for E.
Khorne Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Seeing as how the other guilds have been moving forward with their map making efforts I thought I'd give you a little preview to show that we are not being left behind. I shall be adding all your location requests later this week hopefully. And S-O-T, I wont forget your sea monster Hope you like! Hvar Icewind Worlds End Caravan Co. PS. If anyone can suggest a more Nordic font that would be appreciated. I'm also looking for a few good map symbols for villages towers etc. That's one awesome looking map! Did you hand-draw the entire thing yourself? It looks really good and must've taken you a lot of time. I second other people's opinions about the fact it looks somewhat like those Tolkien maps. Again, great stuff! Can't wait to se it coloured or finished. As for a font, maybe Elric could be a good one? I use the font for Nordic stuff. It not Westernized runes or actual runes, but it still has a Nordic feel, IMO.
Ecclesiastes Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 It's still a work in progress, unless I don't find any time to change things, but here is the preview of my "sanctuary".
Viceroy Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 (edited) @ Khorne: Thanks for the encouraging words, Tolkein was definately an influence for my style. Unfortunately I'm new to photoshop so its going to take me a while to learn how to blend the map onto a layer of parchment paper but its a fun project nonetheless. And yes everything is hand drawn apart from the symbols, borders and text. @ Ecclesiastes: Thats awesome! I've had an idea to attempt norse buildings like that but you've executed the build so well, that temple is a real credit to Mitgardian culture. The winged statue inside stands out too. Edited December 9, 2011 by Viceroy
kabel Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 (edited) wow, this is really awesome, it's as norse as a moc could possibly be, I like a lot of things about it!! Anyways, I've also been buisy: more pics here and here Edited December 10, 2011 by kabel

rucorder Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 @Ecclesiastes: Wow! That is mighty awesome! @Kabel: Love that town!
Khorne Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 @Ecclesiastes: Wow, nice temple! I reminds me of the Borgund stave church in Norway. Immediatly recognizable as a Mitgardian building .
Sirens-of-Titan Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 Beautiful buildings all! @kabel: that is a very nice scene, I especially like the brickwork throughout! @Cwertle: Welcome to the Guild! Looking forward to seeing your MOC's! @Ecclesiastes: Once again I am in awe of your timely and well-made MOC! The temple is a beauty and a testament to Norse Culture! (I would modify the crosses though, we aren't sticking to real-world religions, and so we need to invent our own version of Northern Mythological gods ) A grand effort, and something I was hoping to see sooner or later! (Glad that it's sooner ) So the challenge here is to invent a symbol to represent the Mitgadian Temples. Let's all try to build a few and the best one becomes official. (Must be made of small, simple and readily available parts and Northern in style) @Viceroy: Wonderful work on the guide once again, it's just the sort of thing Mitgardia needed!
Ecclesiastes Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 (edited) Thanks guys for the comments so far! Here's the result: Temple of Gyhnran @Ecclesiastes: Once again I am in awe of your timely and well-made MOC! The temple is a beauty and a testament to Norse Culture! (I would modify the crosses though, we aren't sticking to real-world religions, and so we need to invent our own version of Northern Mythological gods ) A grand effort, and something I was hoping to see sooner or later! (Must be made of small, simple and readily available parts and Northern in style) Your right, I made something else instead of the crosses, it's simple to make and looks fearsome: Mitgardian Mythology: This sign represents the directions, North, South, East and West. So far does the power of the gods go. And the golden dots represents the eyes of the gods, they see everything. The wooden staffs in all directions represents the grandness of the gods. Cwertle Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Just an idea, It might be nice if there was some sort of moc index for the guild. Or is there already one and i just missed it?
Viceroy Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Just an idea, It might be nice if there was some sort of moc index for the guild. Or is there already one and i just missed it? You missed it. Its contained within my Guide to Mitgardia: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=63195 @Legoman273: Welcome aboard, hope to see some nice MOCs from you soon! @Everyone: I think I now have all the Mitgardian MOCs listed in my guide. Added Military and Economic Chapters to the index. (although we have no Economic MOCs to link to though )
Thor Lund Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 (edited) Hail Jarl Nibelung, Ter be with great honour t'at mine clan swear fielthy ter yourself and the land of Mitgardia! We be but few, but we shall make ourselves worth yer while. Let me introduce; Our three renowned warriors; only their strength surpasses their thirst fer fight and havoc. Eirikr Bloodaxe, Freydir Broadchest and Ragnarr the Grim. Eirikr Bloodaxe character video - Ragnarr the Grim character video Our band of strong and able soldiers. Then t'ere be our merchants, as deft in haggling as with their eye fer fortune. Olgar Goldtoe and Hegnar Silverhair. They find and make trade w'ere no man would think it possible. Our brewer Tørstein Swaggerleg, oft seen ter drink more than he produces. As any good northerner we have picked up a few trells (slaves) during our raids. T'ere be some good work to get out of them, once ye know where to hit them. And last but least, t'ere be myself, Bragivarr the Druid, old as snow and with spells t'er freeze yer spine! Next ter me be Thor, yes the thunder god himself, though not really part of our force he owe me a few favours and so comes when called (more oft when Freydir be around though ). Bragivarr the Druid character video May our fights be plenty and pockets heavy! Bragivarr Edited December 10, 2011 by Thor Lund
Thor Lund Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Mitgardia Military : Spellbound Man-Machine Through a wooden skeleton and dark spells, this Man-Machine can rack havoc to any army and rock the foundation of most fortifications. Albeit short lived and error prone, as it requires a fresh brain to be inserted and then fed with a very intricate series of spellwords from an experienced Druid to control it. Brains are usually a plenty on a battlefield, though its freshness is key to a successful run. Thor
