Honestly, I probably wouldn't have developed out Arthur's homeland as much as I did if it weren't for the rule that the second Hero has to be connected to the first--it would have been just a casually-mentioned background element for him, and he probably wouldn't have gotten as much backstory, either. My original concept for second character was literally a relative, but now that I know that the second character doesn't have to be literally "related" to Arthur, I'm able to explore other concepts.

You mean that girl who's name I can't remember but I'm certain starts with 'C'?

I never imagined an accent for Benji, I suppose he'd just have a normal gruff sort of voice with no real accent.

(Don't mean to interrupt whatever review process is about to happen, but I've been trying to get up-to-date on this thread and I just wanted to toss in that that is exactly how I imagined Benji when Matthias met him in the Hall.)

No review process is happening so you can feel free to do an actual review of Benji if you wish

I really like the interaction between the newer heroes of Quest 90. Without spoiling anything, the choices one made and its impact on the rest of the party has been particularly interesting. It's great to see there's no shortage of exemplary roleplaying, even years after the launch of the game.

Oh hey, remember that character review thing we said we'd do back in January?

Basically, how this works is you review one character, than the next post reviews the character of the poster above them, so on and so forth. To start us off I chose a hero at random using an RNG, and that hero is none other than...

Grimwald Gjinko (LordOfTheNoobs)

Grimwald is a contrast to many heroes in Heroica. As LordofTheNoobs has said once before, his life lacks any big moments - just many small ones that built his character. And he definitely is a character. He is a humble, reasonable fellow who comes from equally humble origins. To see a hero come from such a background is a very refreshing trait. Further adding to Grimwald's character is his species. Grimwald is one of only two gnomes in all of Heroica's massive gallery of heroes. This opens up some interesting RP options, such as the whole "mistake me for a dwarf" complex alluded to in 99.

Grimwald has faced failure as well, further adding to his character. His very first quest proved to be one of the most intense ones he has had (...so far... ), the Wolfgang laying siege to the theatre. He was knocked out by demons, and narrowly saved. Whether or not this failure weighs on him is yet to be seen, but Grimwald's combination of a humble origin and a variety of Heroica experiences have made him a very enjoyable character to follow.

Hey, this thing's back! I'll also add to Grimwald saying I love the fact he has a very distinct fear of ghosts. It allows for interesting roleplaying option and also adds depth. More heroes need to have at least something that gives them the willies. Doesn't need to be anything huge, something like a fear of insects or rats. So yeah, I really like Grimwald. :sweet:

Remember, folks, this is kinda meant to be a progressive thing, so:

Next person can choose Sorrow, Hoke, or Karie.

Sorry, trying to remember how this goes.

Basically, at this point, someone needs to look over Sorrow's character. I'll do it, since I seem most qualified, being the characters great great grandkid.

After you've reviewed the character, the next person reviews your character, so on, and so forth.

Sorrow (Endgame)

Sorrow's past is a mysterious affair. He was resurrected by necromancers and raised by them until he eventually set off on his own and found a woman named Sarah who he fell in love with. Fearing that his human like state was decaying to rapidly, he spent all of the money the two owned on Ether Cores, forcing Sarah to prostitute herself. Sorrow eventually left her, not realizing she was bearing a child, who down the line eventually result in two great x17 granddaughters, Kayla Raylton, who would later be known as Violetta the Cat Burglar, and Karie Alderflask. Sorrow remained alive to see both of his grandchildren in the present age, but would condemn Kayla to her death at the hand of Captain Patricia's rapier. With not much time left (one to two years), Sorrow struggles to make amends with his past and his sole remaining relative.

Sorrow's current position leads to some interesting development. With the clock ticking down, Sorrow has a set amount of time to finish the few things he needs to do. His attitude towards his relative Karie has shifted as time goes on, acting somewhat like a father figure. Sorrow allows his backstory to be important and meaningful, without feeling as if it's his entire identity. Despite still feeling remorse for his actions toward Sarah, he has allowed it shape and branch off and create a narrative interwoven with that of the game's universe. He allows his hinderance due to age open up more interesting roleplaying options and help portray the picture of an dying character trying to make one last impression on the world.

I would write about Hoke but I can't remember anything distinct from him (no offence, UsernameMDM). This is why it's bad for your health to make a character vanilla.

Vanilla Double Cannon Tank.

Part of these reviews requires a bit of research. Look the hero's quests up in the library and do a little reading. You'll be amazed at some of the progression some of the characters have made over the years. Hoke for example has gone through quite a bit from his first time fighting Crozen in Quest 5 to the armies of darkness in Quest 19 to the malicious Wren in 53 and finally everything involving the current Baltarok Trilogy.

A decent point. I've started a write-up for Karie, but I'll probably do a bit more research to make sure I capture the character properly.

I almost wish each player would keep some sort of index of their characters' most important moments (they don't always happen in quests). I started to keep a biography of Hybros on my profile page, but it's been a very long time since I updated it.

Right now I don't follow any particular character's story closely (some more than others), but that means that for some, knowledge of another character's story is limited to their own character's interactions with them. You just get bits-and-pieces of someone else's story, more similar to real life than a story in which you follow many characters' paths. I'm not sure if that's for better or for worse, but there are definitely a lot of blank spots on the map for me as far as other people's characters go.

I'm tempted myself to go back and reread all of Karie's dialogue then jot down important bits of her speaking so I can have them on record, because I've frankly forgotten a bit of it, there's that much stuff.

No kidding, a lot of her character development took place in the Hall thread, outside any quest.

Here it is, I didn't so much focus on the facts and events, but more the character and how she has been role played so far. There's probably a decent bit of speculation and interpretation, and I could be wrong about much of it.

Karie (Kintobor)

Karie is a character that has evolved as a direct result of the circumstances around her. From locating a long lost sister, to a love affair that somewhat borders on stockholm syndrome. Rather than choosing a direction up front and forcing that change in spite of what occurs, the intended direction of the character has meshed quite well with the unexpected events from the various quests, NPCs, and PCs she has met. There is a fairly in depth back-story which has been slowly revealing itself through various cut scenes and revelations, but even while shifting the perspective to focus on Karie it does not completely eclipse the other characters on the stage.

Character-wise, Karie is a quick witted thief who has little fear of the various vices life has to offer. She seems to enjoy being lusted after and has used her feminine charms on multiple occasions. She has a history with drug abuse, not unlike her ancient ancestor Sorrow, though that addiction does not seem to dissuade her from partaking in other forms of chemical entertainment. She appears to have no problem stealing from others, working as a pick pocket for a while and attempting to steal from the marketplace and Guts. She also has a love for music and dancing, with experience performing for others in the past though while she seems to enjoy it, those memories are not happy ones.

There is a lot more to the character, and I'm still sure what the deal is with the mustached flashback character, but I definitely consider Karie a character worth following in the Heroica story.
