I like the colors you used for the house/tavern in the second MOC.

But I agree with Mr. Phes on the color of the tower. Might be better in white with some yellow.

Posted
Do you mean the first or the second version??? And BTW, I think the red cannon bases were mostly on ships...

No, no... that is not quite true! Red cannons were used for most of the Imperial Guards and Soldiers on the ground, and basically all the ships on the high seas. See the ITP and Imperial Outpost, Sabre Island, EF and other Imperials... as well as several later pirate sets, like Pirate's Perilous pitfall!

Also, I like the second version better, the color choices go better together on each building, even if over all they are still a little... colorful? hehe.

I would object to the idea that Phes has never seen a boat house as I put something like that on my Harbor's Fortress section. I guess it is not a 'shack' like Brickster's, but the idea is similar! See for yourself!

That's definately a boathouse! Nice job. Does it have a removable roof?

In regard to this image:

NZ%20boathouse%201%20ws.jpg

I would say it's a computer graphic design. What both images inpired were a simple "shack-like" boathouse almost like an old log cabin in shape (real simple).

Phes: you're definately "nit-picking". But that's OK. You have a good critical eye. I'm still not real crazy about the overall MOC, but it is my 1st (or 2nd) pirate-theme MOC, so I don't think it came out too bad.

But just because they were red in official sets doesn't mean they have to red in MOCs

Actually I didn't realise that was a boat house...

There's definitely nothing wrong with your MOC, I'm just a traditionalist!

How come you're not real crazy about the overall MOC? What do you think needs improving?

I think I would like it much more uniform rather than different buildings and colors. I wanted the "little fishing village-like look" - buildings different styles and colors (but it came out much too different than what I wanted). Also, I like designs closer to Lego. I'm probably my own worst critic though.

Being one's own worst critic is is quite a common phenomena, but don't worry I'll be your critic for you :-D

You have got the fishing village look going, maybe you could add one of those LEGO nets to add to that image - although they're not that easy to come by...

But look at it this way... First time you do most things it doesn't come out the way you hope, so the key is to keep at it and eventually you'll get there. So attempting this fishing village twice has been a valuable building experience for you.

Should you ever create another version it would probably be even more to your liking...

What are you talking about? I was defending you! You said you would prefer it red, Mr. Tiber said red was for ships, I said that wasn't right, they were often used on land, that was all, I never said it had to be either color, just correcting Mr. Tiber's claim.

Actually I didn't realize that was a boat house...

Well it is a house... or something... and it has boats... so I guess that classifies it as a boat house... or something.

That's definately a boathouse! Nice job. Does it have a removable roof?

If you were referring to my image that I posted, yes, kind of... it has a removable second level.

follow the link to have a look.

Yes. Excellent! That's a really nice MOC. I like the multiple rooms/sections (esp. the armory). The color combination is perfect. Maybe I will try some white and yellow. Well done.

I shall admit this is probably better than any Pirate Port MOC I've made because really I haven't made any. Is that sad? :'-(

...

Mister Phes why haven't you built any serious mocs? Is that legal? Be admin of this forum and not make any mocs (j/k)? X-D

OK, I destroyed my initial MOC to create a 2nd design. This one I like much better, and it actually has the boathouse I was looking to create.

Phes had mentioned that the port looks more like an Imperial Navy Port but the image says "TheBrickster's Pirates". This is meant to refer to the theme, not the MOC itself. It is actually a Naval Port (no story yet as I'm still working on my pirate design techniques. Thank you all for your feedback on the 1st design.

Hey brickster, can your boat shop fix frigates? My frigate is in need of serious repairs. :-P

I like both MOCs. Simple and kewl looking; I'm all for simple kewl looking MOCs. Nice crane on the first pics. Never thought of using blue on buildings before. It actually don't look that bad at all.

That ship is huge! Just go ahead and back it up into the boathouse. We should be able to get it sailing again soon. :-$

I was really trying to have some color. I really hate all grey. I will try some yellow and white after seeing ZCerberus's MOC. You guys are really pros at these ship and shore pirate MOCs.

SWEET!! We've been sailin for weeks in utter disrepair. We've heard good things about your boat shop and wanted quality craftmanship. We almost ran out of gas getting here but we made it :-P . Thanks matey, starting on the repairs of our ship. Hey what type of payment do you recieve, credit, dublunes, or rum?

*blush*

If you think my ship is profesional, you should see legopirate83's ship and aaron's ship. These guys have like millions of dollars i think. Their ships are perfectly color coordinated and awesome! i'm a dirt poor college student using legos i've gotten in the last twenty years of collecting. After i get my civil engineering degree, i'll be able to put out super professional mocs like them two.

What do you mean by "serious"? Here are my past MOCs:

Imperial Ground Forces

Imperial Armada Presidio

Governor Broadside's Mansion

The Pursuit

The reason I haven't been very active MOCing lately is because I'm very displeased with the camera I'm using, because if you look at the pictures you'll notice they're absolutely horrible. I intend to buy a new camera in the very near future but it probably won't be till early in the new year and once I get that expect to see more MOCs out of me.

I'm probably my own worst critic though.

This is often true, witness my recent brickshelf gallery purge. Where other eyes may be taken with the overall scene, the builder's often go straight to the weakest point...

God Bless,

Nathan

My apologies Mister Phes, I like your governor's mansion (err villa :-$ ), I look foward to seeing more MOCs from ya. BTW, your pics are much better than mine. I don't ever have a problem seeing the detail on yer MOCs.

After further thought, I've decided that i really like the blue building. Whenever I build a MOC fort, I think i'll have a blue building with yellow detailing in it somewhere. I could see how it could break up the white and yellow and still look real nice.

Yes, the one issue I do have with my harbor is it is so uniform. I guess I always that was okay since they were all part of the complex, and forts would often be all one color, but I do like Brickster's use of something else to break it up! *y*

Oh, and Phes... is it just me, or does the Govenor's mansion look very similar to the Armada building you have there ;-) (this guy is apparently winking)

I'll fix that smiley soon! Yes, the Governor's Mansion is a modified Armada Presidio, that is mentioned in the thread.

And if anyone has any future questions regarding Phes MOCs then do it in the respective Phes MOC threads because The Brickster probably doesn't what his first and second Pirate MOCs tarnished by Phes MOC discussion! :-D

No, I don't mind at all. If sharing my MOC brings up other great discussions and other MOCs that have already been shared before, not a problem at all. I've told Phes this before, but I've always loved the Pirate theme, it's just that I only have a few sets that were purchased as a gift from a friend. I wish I had the collections that some of you have. I'd be building all sorts of MOCs.

Well dear Brickster you can start building your collection today and continue your Pirate MOCing! As you can see in under 3 days your thread has accumulated over 40 posts so your efforts won't go unnoticed.

I recently tried building an Imperial Naval Fortress/Port similar to this MOC with yellow and white pieces. I wasn't happy with it so I destroyed it (didn't bother taking any pictures). MOC #2 was stilll much better. I need to learn the right balance of white and yellow to make the MOC look like classic pirate theme sets.

Also, I did notice that on the old sets, the arches were mostly white. I don't have white arches but rather yellow. It does make a difference when you're trying to capture a similar look.

Tell me about it! I had to order a lot of white arches for my MOC.

The more recent pirate sets for the Imperial Guards actually used a lot of yellow arches and look a little more... childish? They were trying to reach their target demographic better, and unfortunately reduced the quality of their sets, at least I think, to add trap doors and tilting masts. Oh well, it is what it is. Good luck Brickster!

I've got quite a few yellow but I think zero white arches. I tried inverting the color combination but it just didn't look right. Also, I don't have the top castle pieces that add to the overall look as well. It's just not working for me. I just need more pirate parts!
