HELP! I am need with some last minute advice on an entry to a competition. I really want it to be the best it can be so if you guys could give me as much advice and creative/criticism as possible. Once again I was trying that style of old stone work but I also tried some snot/snac rock work for the first time. I will be Interested on how you thought they turned out. This will not be the finale model (hopefully) and I will retake the photos. Hope you enjoy and let the cc flow in!

Oh, and hopefully a new "the retaking of Eolas" chapter will be out soon

In my opinion, the tower stonework looks too chaotic and not unified enough to look like a single entity. There are just too many textures and colors for my liking. I get that you are going for the look of ruins, but it also looks far too solid to be ruins and instead just looks visually busy (again, too many textures and colors). A collapsed tower should be a pile of rocks, or at least a mostly-disassembled mass of stone, not a fully-assembled rectangular prism with a few holes. The landscaping looks good, though, especially the little river. I like the sand left behind on the banks.

I agree with Qenjin on the last point, the sand is awesome! The rockwork and vegetation as well!

I'm not sure of the stonework, tough...

I pledge this, today I will finally finish my build (almost done now, just need to make some terrain to put the buildings on), tomorrow unless my camera breaks (wouldn't su... no I will not hex myself lol) I will take pictures. From that point onward, I will only make small vignettes again... in my 1 and a half year since I started MOC'ing whenever I make a big moc (this is my third time attempting something larger then a vignette) it sits around for months because I have neither time, pieces nor the willpower to finish it and with college about to start I won't have time for big projects anyway. After I'm done with this though I'd like to try and make about 2 vignettes per month, if not at least one (whenever I do small moc's I tend to just finish them in a day and at least that way get something done).

Also welcome Laesonar :sweet:

Welcome to Brandon (and anyone else I might have missed)

Tinder for the Avalonian nobility? :P

I am not sure but suppose the books and chapters (major events) are the main drivers of time.

Tinder for the Avalonian nobility!!

I knew that someone would make that joke ( or similar)

@Maestro, looking good so far! I'll agree with en_zoo that the water could use a good deal of trans-clear or trans-blue in it if you have any, and I would cap off as many studs on the rock-work as possible with dark grey cheese or 1x1 tiles. In general, I think rock-work looks best with some studs, but still not very many, exposed to give it the sort of smoothly jagged look it has in real life - especially in places where the rest of the landscaping has a lot of studs, like here. Henjin has given some good advice about the tower, but I will add that your posing there is really superb!

Another thing is that I would probably remove the dark grey tiles in the middle of the landscape, and make fewer but more natural looking (and a little bigger) rocky outcrops combining cheese slopes, tiles, maybe a larger slope or two, with a couple of studs exposed (maybe some 1x1 rounds would help too). For some reason the flower stalks always look a bit odd (IMHO at least!) scattered all over like this, since they really aren't to scale for minfig sized grass - so I would suggest only grouping a few clusters here and there, but not covering the whole build in them. If you have any pieces in that color, trans-green swampy areas pretty much always look good, and a few more tiles mixed in with the green up top and the bank below (they generally look best partly buried under studs) would improve the look overall.

My last piece of advice would be to add some smaller leaves (if you've got any left! - I know not enough leaves is always a problem for me, anyways!) to the top of the flex-tube trees (probably just laying them there, since unfortunately they don't have any attachment points in the middle), or to cover the top of the tubes some other way, since it looks a tad odd the way they are just sort of cut off. I'm rather conflicted on that point, though, so just use your own discretion!

Well, that's about as much advice/suggestions as I'm able to think of at the moment, so I hope it helps!:laugh:

Thanks Garmadon for all your advice. I managed to find a few more studs for the river but ill never have enoigh to cover the whole thing :p as for every thing else I will try take it into account.

can't you use round 1x1 trans blue or 'diamond' pieces instead? those work pretty well too.

Yeah, that would also work. I have searched high and low for substitutes but I never have enough of them :p

I know that feeling

Transclear and -blue cheese slopes also work

I present to you the official, better map of my island.

Also, I would like to rename my island and province Dragonstone, if that is ok. I though it sounded better, considering we have a Flight of Dragons. Credit goes to Columbus for introducing me to this map making software.

If it's not too late maestro, I would make a thicker trunk for that one tree on the tower. Also you could make the leaves on the thin hose trees less symmetrical to make it look more natural. And if you have, put trans clear plates or tiles on the water and then raise the shore so it's still one plate higher than the water.

I really like the collapsed tower ruin.

Hey guys, can anybody tell me what I've missed?

There are three minichallenges in Nocturnus up, and make sure to check out John's/SK's collab: Nordheim and Blufiji's Qar Riwa!
