This might be me spouting rubbish, but seeing as a chunk of Kali isn't around, what about having a couple of "guest lecturers" to fill in until the others are back? That would solve the problem of not having enough guys voting on MOCs, but wouldn't open up the whole thing to everyone, and when the time came, it could go back to being just Kali lecturers!

That's certainly something to look at if we can't raise enough members to help us vote on things quickly. I wouldn't be adverse to going that way, but i'd prefer it if we could find enough Kali ppl in the first instance. :classic: What do others think?

Oh no, I'm very sorry to hear the bad new! Ska, have a good rest and I hope you have a full recovery soon. NM, thank you for looking after your father, I hope he to will have a full recovery before long. It sounds like you have had an excellent shopping spree!

Well done to all who entered the life and death in Kali builds, they are all very striking and it's a brilliant contest. I have not had much building time, since the birth of our daughter but I am putting something together for the challenge, hope I can finish in time. Otherwise it will be a free build!

I understand that, after all you guys have put in the hard work organising it, it would be nice to keep it in house. I was just looking at how much of an active membership you guys have at the moment, and there's not too many of you. I suppose this time of year is quieter though, hopefully after Christmas you'll get people back again!

I went through the UP list, hopefully that helps us catch up. I have seen all of these MOC's and been around, but just haven't had time to sit and really comment. Hopefully that changes soon

Ow! That's not a fun ligament to tear. :oh: Will you need a reconstruction? Get well soon, and enjoy the extra building time in the meanwhile!

Not certain yet, apparently you don't need it if you don't plan on running ever again, but despite being way out of shape, I still like organized sports. We will have to find out after the honeymoon - yay 12 days in Disney World with crutches!

I will be more active again after Christmas, end of semester grading, packing, and injury has kept me out of the forums.

Like everyone else, real life and a wonderfully severely herniated disc in my back has kept me from me from being too active right now. Not being able to sit or stand for more than ten minutes kinda puts a damper on my building and mood, lol.

I still plan on getting something in for each of the main challenge catagories and will make a better effort to get voting on some of the university builds.

There is usually a lull in activity between the main challenges, but Im sure everything will start picking up again once the challenge deadline approaches.

Well, when it rains, it pours. Not to add on to the sick fathers (my own), torn ACLs, herniated discs, etc, but … I got laid off yesterday (again)! No big deal; that's the danger of working for software startups -- sometimes they start up, and sometimes they don't. It's a bit of a mixed blessing -- no job == no income, but it provides plenty of time for LEGO! Except that I'm 2000+ miles from my collection… Anyway, given this news, I expect that I will have lots of time to grade university papers, er, I mean, review MOCs for the UP program! If I'm really ambitious (and my dad takes long naps), I may even start working on some LDD builds -- I'll just use the brick collection right here inside my Macbook Pro!

Sorry to hear that NM, sounds like a lot of woes have befallen Kaliphlinites lately. LDD might be the answer to your remote collection. Eryn, my brother had a herniated disc a couple years back and I really hope it subsides quickly. Ska, sorry to hear about your ACL, but hopefully it will mean more building time, something I have been lacking with my little one eating up all my time.

Oh dear, it sounds like everyone is in the wars! Makes my 2 fillings that i need to have done seem pretty tame. (had to go to the dentist today- yuck) I hope things pick up for you all soon. Eryn, that sucks about yr back, i can sympathise cause i have to be careful with my lower back as well (an old injury), it's part of the reason i build standing up.

With regards UP voting, if we have 3 regulars (Gideon, Gedren and me) and say 3-4 more casual ppl then things should get moving quicker. Thanks Kayne for chipping in with your votes and thanks everyone else for saying you'll help as well. How about we give it a week or so and then reassess how the certification system is going, if it's still slow then maybe we ought to look at roping someone else from another guild. (The "guest lecturer" idea. :classic: )

Stay safe everyone!!

Seems like the superheroes of Kaliphlin all have their own weaknesses.

I also always build standing up due to an old back injury (too crazy downhill skiing back in high school), so a table with motorized elevation was my best lego investment ever. I find that it actually works pretty well to build standing up since I have a better reach to the shelves around me then. I just have to have good shoes when doing too long sessions at the building table, since time somehow flies faster when I build standing up (probably because my back doesn't remind me that I've been at it too long) and instead my feet get sore

After building my Petraean wall in three days and nights (barefoot, it was in the middle of the summer), my feet took a week to recover

I guess I picked the right guild for myself! I also have a bad lower back :sceptic: I have scoliosis and that gave me about a 40 degree curve down by my hips, you can't see it because it curves back 2 vertebrae up, but it hurts a lot every so often and I guess I would have been about 4 inches taller otherwise. That's why I can't read through MOC's all night here on GoH, my back starts to kill if I sit at the computer too long

My lips are chapped... Maybe I should have joined this guild instead of Mitgardia

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. I'm really not trying to make fun of anyone's problems. It sounds like you all have more than your fair share of major life issues. Sorry to hear that. Hope to see more amazing builds coming out of this guild. I'm a big fan of desert builds so I love to see the participation here. I lack a wide assortment of tan pieces so it's hard to make any myself. Keep up the great work everyone!

Thanks for the encouragement! BTW, the PAB wall at the LEGO store can easily rectify your tan bricks problems. Recently there seems to be a pretty good selection of tan bricks at the store whenever I go - 2x4s, 2x6s, 1x4s, plates, etc.

Provided there is a Lego store anywhere close by...still can't understand why they won't open a Lego store in Stockholm, would only be 3 h away for me then :classic: I suppose they don't want to steal sales from their successful partner stores here, but those have ridiculous Swedish list prices and no PaB (= uninteresting to us AFOLs).

Tan generally seems like a color which has a quite good supply of base bricks but some of the more specialized pieces tend to be expensive...

3 hours away? Perhaps you should go to the Copenhagen store instead? Unless you're north of Stockholm, in which case it'd be even farther away. I'm always surprised at the few number of LEGO stores outside of the US. I suspect that TLG is making great profits through its existing dealers in those countries and doesn't want to disrupt that. Whereas in the US, the toy market is controller by Amazon, Walmart, Target, and TRU, who are able to drive big discounts from TLG. Thus opening their own stores and controlling that channel looks a lot more attractive. Therefore, maybe you ought to welcome Walmart to Sweden!

Or find an American to supply you. When I worked in Stockholm in 1997, every time I flew from the US, I used to bring a ton of stuff for my Swedish colleagues. They'd give me big shopping lists (mostly for clothes), as I could buy stuff for about 35% of what it would cost in Sweden. Thank goodness customs never checked my baggage...

I hear you. It is a bit frustrating to load up on tan 2x4s, 2x6s, 2x2s, 1x4s, etc, but then they never put a crucial piece like 2x3s on the wall.

NM, you were an international personal shopper?

Lego Store? FAH! I live in Florida, but have never been. The purchase opportunities aren't worth the travel costs.

Posted

I live in the middle of Sweden, so Copenhagen is 3 times as far away as Stockholm...but my grandmother lives close to the Öresund strait on this side, so I've taken the train over the bridge to Copenhagen a couple of times when I've been visiting her

Anyway, I'm going to take a way too large suitcase and a stack of empty PaB cups (with stickers) with me if we go to the US next summer as planned.

Posted

There are 3 Lego stores within 30 min drive of Brickworld in Chicago...

Nice! Another reason to go there :classic:

That's what I tried at Brickworld, only problem is the weight of Lego and a second suitcase isn't really an option because that's pretty expensive!

What about making a package and posting it to yourself back home?

Must at least be cheaper than overweight luggage on a transatlantic flight...

You need to invest in vests and cargo pants and take parts back on your person. You would avoid the luggage cost then.

I've got this image of a guy literally covered in pockets- I think there was someone who did that. Although not with Lego.
