So that's a no for capacitors/batteries to store electricity, and to genetic engineering. The rest of it is fine but you will have to restrict the technology levels. I haven't intended on making batteries but if I wanted to, I could. It's very possible to do, look up Ancient Batteries and/or look at a diagram here. It would also fit with the Kaliphlin style quite well but it would have to be something I'd say "attempted" in the sense no one really knows how to make it. As for Genetically Engineering three people, I think I can do that somehow through the use of Magic somehow. I can't part without that idea for The Grustrag Three since they are practically born killers unless I can say they've been almost "genetically altered" or experimented on to be almost "Godly" in combat. In short, I'll find a way to make it work. Edited August 29, 2014 by Behemoth Quote

Lord Vladivus Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 I still need to place my orders but I've been quite busy for the past few days that I haven't gotten to it. I might not be very busy today, it depends, so hopefully I'll be able to start my orders. I also need to spend my money wisely because all the accessories are expensive that I'm getting. I also need the okay to use my concept first, so is it okay? (Asking everyone here) As people have said, I would focus less on the minifigs to start- get a few, but expensive accessories are just a money sink. By all means, for characters, but for regular grunts not so much. Focus on bricks, and smaller MOCs to start. Lots of minifigs is redundant of you don't have enough bricks. Quote

So in the end you don't have to ask permission. Build something and see what the response is from it. Trial and error.. Like MontyPython for example. Don't try to make up all your lore beforehand but make it as you go. Take it from someone that has tried it already, making the lore before your builds, makes it hard for people to remember your lore and also difficult for your builds to keep up with your lore. Quote
Yzalirk Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 There is no known evidence of ancient batteries. I assume that you actually do want advice when you ask for it. The best evidence I can give would be this. You could also look up more information about the Baghdad Battery if you'd like. As for advice, it never hurts to get any. The best thing I could think of would be a type of gem or some sort of key... Also, for "Genetically Engineering" The Grustrag Three, one of the best ways I can think of is almost creating them like how Saruman created the Uruk Hai. Some sort of magic could work, no? But I can't let go of the idea of using some type of stasis chamber made from glass. As people have said, I would focus less on the minifigs to start- get a few, but expensive accessories are just a money sink. By all means, for characters, but for regular grunts not so much. Focus on bricks, and smaller MOCs to start. Lots of minifigs is redundant of you don't have enough bricks. I plan on getting 15 minifigs I'd use but I'll be reusing them for other characters too. My builds will hopefully be medium sized but I also have four large green baseplates I could use for somewhat large battles and I intend on using them for my builds too. I'm sure you could find a way to describe what you want to do in more "magical" terms. So in the end you don't have to ask permission. Build something and see what the response is from it. Take it from someone that has tried it already, making the lore before your builds, makes it hard for people to remember your lore and also difficult for your builds to keep up with your lore. Awesome advice, I will do that instead. I will reveal no more about my faction after the thing about the Grustrag Bolt below, that's the last bit of lore I'll reveal. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I also don't remember if I elaborated that much on what The Grustrag Three does after defeating an important person but they attack a device to their leg called a Grustrag Bolt that makes them weaker to the people my society, drains their stamina faster, limits magic use, and makes them fatigued more often. The device can't be taken off unless a Grustrag Bolt Release is made. The schematic for it can be obtained from my society (we don't sell them though) or Dwarves. Quote
robuko Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 The best evidence I can give would be this. You could also look up more information about the Baghdad Battery if you'd like. From your link to the Baghdad battery, which I already checked: In March 2012, Professor Elizabeth Stone, of Stony Brook University, an expert on Iraqi archaeology, returning from the first archaeological expedition in Iraq after 20 years, stated that she does not know a single archaeologist who believed that these were batteries. Better to use magic. But if it is too powerful, it will cause problems. Quote
Yzalirk Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 (edited) Better to use magic. But if it is too powerful, it will cause problems. I'd like to say that the power can run out and they'd have to wait for another thunderstorm to harvest electricity for power. I might scrap that idea if I can think of something a bit more unique (I'm not talking about having thousands of hamsters running on wheels to charge up things) that probably wasn't thought of, but we'll see. gedren_y Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Having your figs being tinkerers should be fine, but always remember where you are. Magical gems and weapons are supposed to be rare, and that often items 'magiced' by a wizard fade over time in the hands of non-magical people. I think we should leave the Baghdad battery alone for the time being. Too many theories, not enough facts to back them up. Leave the electricity to Monster Fighters. GOH has glass, and potions capable of changing people. Rarity is the watchword here. Also, get the potion wrong it will kill someone, or just not work. Same with 'exploding powders.' I had someone die horribly experimenting in the story of a recent build. As others have said, get some bricks and start building. Play with some designs, because we'd like to see this culture you're creating. Quote

Play with some designs, because we'd like to see this culture you're creating. Okay, that seems very fair. I will likely end up doing something like that and as for potions, I'm glad you brought that up because I am ordering just about one of each different potion on BrickForge and they look awesome. I really do want to show some trial and error experiments and having some really bad outcomes just for the fact it shows what can happen if it's not done properly, which I really like a lot. So expect some unfortunate deaths. But for potion effects, I was thinking on effects that last forever but it's not easy to make those types of potions. I'll scrap the idea for battery because where my set location would be in Kaliphlin really won't make much sense with it anyways (I plan on being is a lush and forested area, maybe on the border of Avalonia?). I really do like the use of glass for certain things and since Kaliphlin has more sand than any other "province" in GoH, glass shouldn't be that hard to get. Lastly, the only thing that worries me about building is how I'd make a house and a castle wall. Since I'll have my own little faction, I guess I could use my very own style that's just unique to them. I was thinking of doing brickwork with tiles like how lots of people do but I'm not sure if I'll get enough 2x1 tiles. And would it be safe to get say 100 2x1 bricks or should I get more? I like using gray a lot so I'll most likely get gray bricks the most. Also, thanks for the advice, it helps me out a lot. I'll try to get a build or two up each week when I get my orders. Quote

(Potentially this could be changed, but for now.) Quite a few Kaliphlinians don't ever +1, but it is kind of strange that neither of the people who do posted on your build but didn't. I had actually though I had approved that, I will now. And also, posting in the PU thread really helps (you may have done that, I can't remember, but just a reminder). Quote
Yzalirk Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Since I'm one a very tight budget, I might have not gotten the pieces to build you guys like I had wished but I may show a picture of the stuff I've gotten so you guys can tell me what to use. I may be able to build sig-figs like Dextrus Flagg for the record. Quote

I am getting about 200 light gray 2x1 bricks and I have some baseplates and plates to build on so I think that will do. I might get more plates though just in case. Quote
robuko Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 200 sounds like a lot, but if you put a 1 high border around a 32x32 it uses 60, and then 140 would just be enough for a 2 storey wall across one side or a one story wall on 2 sides. Just want to calibrate your expectations. It would be cool to run a 200 brick mini challenge! Quote

I know I want to do small vignettes because I know I can always do good with those but I want to show off a build representing my "base" or kingdom somehow, like maybe a main gate or something but I'm not sure what would be used for the gate. I also really want to get the brick pices that look like bricks, I like those. Quote
LordDan Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 (edited) buy the 120 dollar castle ( or lotr/ hobbit)set and a few smaller things things ( lotr or castle or hobbit)and that would probably get you pretty well set up to build. also how many days does it take to order off of bricklink? I'm curious because I've never used it Edited August 30, 2014 by LordDan Quote
robuko Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 (edited) Well, 200 would be enough for a vignette or if your gatehouse is a 2 storey wall without much decoration. A storey is 6 bricks so for instance a plain 3 storey 8x8 tower would use 14 bricks per level x 6x 3= 252 bricks. 2 of these would be 504 and a 3 storey 10 wide wall in the middle would be 5x6x3= 90 bricks for a 600 total on a medium size gate house with no detail. Of course you will use arches and windows and decorative elements and so on too. Generally, the better a build looks, the more small parts it uses to achieve the detail. This is why we are all encouraging you to rebalance your budget from figs and accessories toward bricks. But start with what you feel comfortable with and work up from vigs. Edit I was going to recommend something similar to Lord Dan but I think the castle sets won't give you a good mix of bricks and Helm's Deep which is a perfect starter pack has gone end of line. The best set to start today is probably the Dol Guldur battle, you can sell the figs you don't want and the bricks will end up very cheap. It's dark grey though. Actually, the DG battle and Ambush will cost you $70 together on Amazon and you get 4 orcs that are close enough to what you are looking for, some other valuable figs to sell, good accessories, and a bunch of decent bricks. I think that's a good place to start, then brick link a bunch of the masonry bricks and some arches and windows. Or, as you are in the USA, visit your nearest Lego Store and load up at the pick a brick wall. People are usually putting around 400-700 parts in the large cups ($20?) so the savings from a visit there will probably pay for the gas. Check what parts are in stock first on http://www.brickbuildr.com/view/pab/ Edited August 30, 2014 by robuko Quote
Yzalirk Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I think I have the parts I'd need for land that I'll be ordering, I'm not sure about making mountains and stuff because those are kind of hard in my opinion. I also wanted to get a few Wargs but with my tight budget, I'll not be getting those. Also, could I build a small shop or few in Ruadh? I was thinking on maybe a Smithing shop, an Alchemy shop, a Magic shop, and/or a Woodworking shop. If I can, I'll be doing them in a small vignette style, just how like to make most builds. Quote
Maxim I Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I am not Sarah so she has the last word on it, but I would suggest to start with 1 shop were multiple items can be bought. You also can build shops in the city of Petraea or Qarkyr :) Quote

Yzalirk Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 (edited) 192 posts - that's a lot of words for a single moc ... I assume you're talking to me, as usual. If you're just trying to start something, I don't really see the reason why and if you want to see my MOCs, you'll have to wait in line. Like I've said, when I get my orders I will have a MOC or two up each week and/or weekend. Finally someone noted it. But hey.. with a preparation like that it has to be a winner! For the record, nothing can ever be a winner. In my book, a winner is someone who participates and puts in there best effort into something. So, if you guys are talking about me, I'm not going to guarantee what I'll make will be the best thing ever but it will certainly be a nice build. Detailing is what I miss out on a lot of the times so I need to pay attention to that especially. All in all, what can I say? I'm an innovator. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As for most of my builds, I was thinking of making them kind of like this in the sense of having the two walls like that. What do you guys think? Edited August 31, 2014 by Behemoth Quote
