-Carson Haupt- Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that region has been heavily civilized. Quote
Mike S Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I just took a second glance at the map and noticed a place I could potentially use and it is isolated, like I wanted, that looks good to use, let me post it below. Light Red indicates where the Zar-Ifrikt has explored. Darker Red indicates where they live/inhabit as well as most populated in. If that is too much owned area, I'll gladly update the map to one owned island by editing the post. I would say that is way too much land for an isolated empire. I know some of those islands are inhabited but not sure which ones. One of the larger outer islands should work well for you though. Quote
robuko Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 In Kaliphlin we do not claim territories, we build outposts and towns and villages. The area you propose is far too large, it surrounds a major port, is already inhabited, and is on a major sea trade route. Building one town there is fine (but be aware that Gorr is heavily populated). If you really want splendid isolation, there are a lot of empty deserts, jungles, swamps, and mountains to choose from. From the description of your tribe, I am starting to wonder if they might be happier in Nocturnus- of course they are very welcome in Kaliphlin which is a tolerant and diverse guild, but the whole ambitious evil supremacist thing is much better suited to Nocturnus, which has a lot of similar empires. In Kali we are a bunch of traders and scholars for the most part. Quote
NiceMarmot Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I marked the location on one of the maps for a location I'd like. It's the semi-transparent red circle along the Red River. Let me know when you finalize the location, and then I'll try to track down whether anyone has claimed it before. Unfortunately, I'm a bit behind on the maps, so someone might have built in that area before, but it's not on the maps. You can claim an area, but it's not 'official' until you post an MOC for your settlement. That's a good spot, but that river is (probably) a major trade route between Avalonia and Eastgate / the Inland Sea. It's not a very isolated spot. Yes my first kid was what got me back into Lego. I hadn't been in a toy isle for years, but when my wife was pregnant with our first child we were looking at kid's stuff and I happened upon Atlantis sets discounted at 50% off. All of a sudden all my good memories of my Lego during childhood returned and I determined that Lego was a pasttime I would share with my son. Not only is Lego fun but it is educational as well and when my son gets old enough, I plan to introduce him to Lego robotics. Me too. I hadn't played with LEGO since I was 13 probably, building early Technics stuff. Then we were at Disneyland right before my son's fourth birthday, and visited the LEGO store, where they had a sale going. I thought: he can start playing with LEGO at age four -- I should load up on birthday presents. Three and a half years later, we've got a ton of LEGO. Yup, you can build a town on one of those islands, not claim the whole island. Once again, not sure if anyone has built anything there yet, but I can check. If no one builds anything nearby, you can probably exert influence over the local territory. One of the big differences between Kaliphlin and Avalonia is that the Avalonians claim provinces and are lords and masters of those areas, but in Kaliphlin our sigfigs tend to just be notable residents of a city or town, perhaps on the Council or something. There are some exceptions (Damaximus). You should read the Kaliphlin building guidelines. Quote
SkaForHire Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 Yep, it has been said already, but we tend to have settlements and towns in Kaliphlin, and some influence into the area surrounding it, but we do not have provinces or fiefdoms. The islands claimed have been built on before by me and others (the island scene in my sig is on those islands), some are volcanic in nature, some are mountainous. I think in the various lore they are mostly island people that shun outsiders, but there are trading posts on the islands from all the major trading companies. The most isolated place in Kaliphlin is A) the Desert or B) the Rakath Mountains. Where there is water, you will tend to find people. Quote

Maxim I Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Brickcurve is already building his town on one of these islands near Eastgate :) Behemoth, I would advice you to build sth inside the withered woods (not on a trade route) if you want a lot of wood, in the desert if you want black oil or in the Rakath mountains if you want metals and ores :) This way your civ is a bit isolated :) Quote
Yzalirk Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I changed the location to the Rakath Mountains, like Maxim suggested, and I think the location is pretty cool. I marked the location with a dark red dot by a lake in the Rakath Mountains, so if there is nothing there, I'd like my city to be there. Preferably having it be called "The Kragg". Quote

Looks like a great location to me! (If no one has built there already?). By that lake might be a good area to support a sizable but still quite isolated population, as I think at least some of the meltwater from the snowy summits of the Rakath flows down there and can be used for irrigration. Is the lake salty or is the salt picked up along the way as the river runs through salt deposits? The closest larger city as far as I know would then be Sultan's Gate atop the Great Escarpment (not shown on this old map however) Edited September 6, 2014 by Gideon Quote

But I'd say, as of now, it would be fresh water since it's more elevated and could have been from melted glaciers then it becomes salty the further the river goes down. I just want to be salty (so I can make up some sort of water purifier thing) and so the location is pretty warm and not freezing since it is at the base of the mountains. I wouldn't mind a few snow patches though. Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Isn't Qarkyr closer than Sultan's Gate? Quote
Gideon Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) Isn't Qarkyr closer than Sultan's Gate? Not to the source of the Lick of Salt, if that is what we are discussing. Qarkyr is located further south, along the first stretch of the Qar-Akhen river. In the map above of north-eastern Kaliphlin Sultan's Gate is located where the road passes the Great Escarpent, north of the (unnamed?) city located where road crosses the Lick of Salt. I guess that would be up to Ska or NM (whoever made the map I guess) should decide. But I'd say, as of now, it would be fresh water since it's more elevated and could have been from melted glaciers then it becomes salty the further the river goes down. I wouldn't mind a few snow patches though. I don't think that water purification on the scale needed for agriculture is feasible with the technology in Historica, so if you want to have a major settlement located next to that lake I would say that at least the streams from the mountains which are feeding the lake should be fresh water. It is also possible that a significant amount of the precipitation (which lands mostly on the eastern side of the mountains) falls in that valley due to the topography and that it in itself is enough to support the agriculture there. The lake itself may be either way, it could be that the lake sits on a part of the salt deposit and that its water therefore has at least some salinity. The climate down in the valley is probably quite warm, at least during large parts of the year. Higher up in the nearby mountains there is surely snow in winter and probably even some glaciers on the shady sides at high altitudes Edited September 6, 2014 by Gideon Quote
Maxim I Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Excellent choice Behemoth :) Well, there is a big fortress a bit in the Northeast of your location (outside your map) which is called Everlast, home of the Intelligence Agency of Mpya Stedor :) Everlast is also a very isolated place, so don't worry haha :D Quote

NiceMarmot Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Good location. The lake is called Skoll Lake; I built a scene on its shore for my Tongue of a Bandit MOC. But no one has built a town nearby (at least that I can remember), so it's wide open territory for you. The lake has already been named, and an MOC built there, so you can't rename the lake. It's intended to have the shape of a skull, although that might be hard to see on the map. It's close to Nocturnus too, so probably a good place for a semi-evil band of orcs. The original intention of the Lick of Salt was that it was a regular, freshwater river that only becomes salty as it starts to peter out in the desert down by the Petraea-Qarkyr Road. Looking forward to seeing some MOCs in the area! Quote

Plus, the location would make it freshwater coming down from the mountains. We are talking about the dot near the lake in the north, not the south right? Also, at that Waterfall, we should have a town that provides portage, maybe called Darkford, Lionsford, Kaliford (Kaliphord!) Quote
gedren_y Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Good choice, Behemoth. If you do want to do water purification, at least on an individual drinking scale, the Nestlands Clans have distillation units for sale. They are mostly conical, modeled after whiskey stills. I did a small one for Visiting Herbologists. Quote
SkaForHire Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 OK, I think I have handed out all the prelude challenges to Kaliphlin members that wanted them. Please let me know if I missed you! Now, here is the part for everyone else not in our guild. I still have a few more builds that need to be created, if you would like a shot at leadership of one of the sides during the Kaliphlin Challenge, then you can help by creating some mocs for the prelude story. Please let me know if you are interested. Only outsiders who help with the prelude story will have a chance to enter the Kaliphlin mini challenge that will decide one of the leaders for the challenge. Quote
Hammerhand Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Hey Ska, I might be interested in helping out. My only question is what does being in leadership during a challenge entail? If it's nothing to complicated, I'll give it a shot. Quote
Yzalirk Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Hey guys, mind if I post my new sig-fig? The Zar-Ifrikt are rolling in town by today! Quote

Hey Ska, I might be interested in helping out. My only question is what does being in leadership during a challenge entail? If it's nothing to complicated, I'll give it a shot. IT would mean that you would be able to help plan what your faction would do during the war... just some brainstorming really, and you could also do a build to show it. And... for the challenge builds your character (sig fig or whichever character you choose to use for this) would be featured. Quote
Yzalirk Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) I think you forgot the picture! No I did, here it is. Vem Tabook is the name of that wretched Orc, leader of the Zar-Ifrikt. His story will unveil soon enough. The picture looks kind of bad so I'll have to take a new one soon. Edited September 6, 2014 by Behemoth Quote
SkaForHire Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 If you camera allows it, try zooming in rather than shooting so close. Your focus is on the wall, not the fig. Make sure he is in focus. Lighting is best when outside or if you have a diffused lighting source from two sides. If you are using a flash that can be directed, point it up or to the right/ left. Try not to direct flash on your builds for best results. He looks good. Looks like the kind of guy that would rip his own leg off and beat you with it. Quote
Yzalirk Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) I hope this one looks better. If not, I'll have to take a few more tomorrow. Edited September 6, 2014 by Behemoth Quote
