EB Community Castle Build: Discussion Thread
KimT replied to I Scream Clone's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Great to see that the build has begun. I've created topics on the blacksmith build and the stables build. Links are in the first post of this topic. At the top in the Community Build Index. - more usefull links will follow I think the idea of a 3 studs wide wall is great. But I think a 4 stud distance from wall to the edge of the baseplate would be more suitable and allow "breaking" the wall and build outwards and closer to the edge. Which would be very usefull when building a tower for example: -

Set#: 4479 Theme: Star Wars Episode IV/V/VI Set Name: Tie Bomber Pieces: 225 + 1 minifig (299 in total) Release: 2003 Price: 30 USD Minifigs: 1 (Tie Pilot) Links: 4479 Brickshelf Folder Bricklink Reference Catalog Peeron.com "Behold the Tie of utter destruction" "The Bomber laid waste to several cities in the Universe, mostly those who'd somehow offended Darth Vader" "Guarded by several regular Ties, these machines of mayhem spared noone with their superior numbers and continous bombing" I never fancied this set much. It's big and somewhat bulky. Still I got me two of them. (They were cheap), and now I am actually quite fond of it. To me it represents the simplicity used in the the early Star Wars sets. Also I have to admit that the launcher adds quite a lot of playability. Box view: The box art is somewhat confusing to me. Why would a bomber roam the Universe? Is it rushing a Rebel Frigate to bomb it in space? I'd rather the Bomber was heading for Mos Eisley or a Rebel base. Still it's acceptable and as usual a little too big for what's actually in it. ImperialShadows had this comment to my opinion: I guess he's right, but I still find it a bit off. The modular build of a Tie: The Tie Bomber is built in modules and then put/clicked together. There's the cockpit, the bomb-section and finally the wings. This counts for all the ties released so far. (well I'm not sure about the Tie in the 10188 DS - I am sure someone can tell us that) The modules (in random order): Bombsection: The Cockpit: The bombsection features a missile launcher using this ever beloved fancy missile: And a few pics of the complete Tie Bomber: Conclusion: In my opinion this is an acceptable version of the Tie Bomber. Bear in mind that this was designed and released in 2003 and for that period I actually think that this is an ok solution. I am not a fan of the annoying use of missile launchers, but it does add great playability. The idea of building the Tie in modules also adds a lot of playability. When the ship takes a hit, one can easily dismember it, removing a wing or the cockpit for example. The Verdict: Playability: 4/5 Missile and detachable parts Design: 3/5 Blue and black , same measurements as other Ties Price: 4/5 Fair price, though as usual overpriced in the Non-US parts of the world The Bricks: 3/5 A fine selection of useful bricks, though the launcher is kinda useless Overall: 14/20 A slightly Above Average set with some minor pro's and con's

I hope to have some time on my hands tomorrow which will result in me posting a "stripped" version of the baseplates with my thoughts on the basic layout. I agree that we have to ensure that we don't "tie-up" the possibility of being creative and innovative. But as mentioned one can/and will hopefully be allowed to work one's way out of having the catwalk and a fixed height. Only imagination and time will tell. -
That's not what I meant. During the past weeks, we've seen newly joined members trying to sell this set all over Eurobricks. All I meant was that such behaviour needs to stop. Which it actually seems like it has. By gawd I want one of these myself...not sure I'm ready to pay the current price though.

Perhaps we should agree on how wide it's allowed to be in the ends? For example look at my posted pic a few posts back. The width is 4 studs, if we agree on a common width, then it would be easier making the modules fit each other. Also a max heigth on the last 1-2 studs from the sides and inwards might be useful. For example: The first 2 studs (counting from the 1x2 bricks with technic pin holes) may not be taller than 10 bricks. This would leave the issue of wether or not a catwalk is intended. If a catwalk is intended are we then allowed to "cut" it? One could built the catwalk 1 or 2 studs in on the baseplate and then stop or "cut" it with a roof or tower. Would that be ok? -

This is what I thought. Just one brick taller. -

Close, but no cigar I meant the technic hole bricks should be in the bottom (as in the pic) And another as brick no6 counting from the bottom. A flip of the 2 bricks in the top is needed for the pic to be correct. This is NOT a rule yet, just an idea we're discussing. -
Absolutely magnificent. The more I look, the more I discover. The roofs made of hands and swimfeet are amazing. I love the splash from the cannonball hitting the water. It's all just so complete and superbly designed. Thanks for showing me this Looks away briefly Is that lady jumping out of the window without her child? And is that a pirate in a barrel? Must stop looking and go to bed now. Those sheep are really cool Turns off computer ... ... .

I think we should make an attachable rule. For example: Each module is to be built on a 16x16 baseplate. A 2x2 brick with a technic pin hole shall be placed on two opposing sides of the baseplate, leaving 7 studs free for building on each side of the brick. Another 2x2 brick with a technic pin hole is to be placed 5 bricks higher and directly above the first placed 2x2 brick with a technic pin hole. Making it a total height of 6 bricks from the baseplate counting both 2x2 bricks and the space between. No overhang is allowed over the sides of the 16x16 baseplate where the 2x2 bricks with technic pin holes are placed. That should allow a lot of imagination and ideas to still be carried out. These are the bricks in mind for the attachment rule: -
Thanks Yeah, I guess you do have a point. I'll just have to vacuum clean the LEGO store in LEGOland Discovery Centre in Berlin next week. Hopefully they'll have a PaB

I am not sure a poll is needed. We ought to just discuss and agree what is to be part of any given module. - Mostly those intending on participating would have an opinion and therefore reaching a mutual agreement on the included things would be better than forcing someone to add things he/she disagrees with. We are awaiting your command ISC -

I think this'll outgrow the initial idea of 3 to 5 members. Perhaps a rearrangement might prove useful: Here's what I suggest as an idea for a community build. We subdivide different things to be build on 16x16 baseplates (towers, walls, gates, blacksmith, stables and so forth) Each thing get a discussion topic and a post your finished MOC topic. In the end of the period, a poll for each thing is made, deciding which on to add to the Community MOC. I'll gladly be the one making and maintaining an index gathering all the strings. How does that sound? Perhaps someone with an accesive amount of pieces could remake each model and make a photo session on it? That's a splendid idea. Which would suit perfectly in the discussion topics -

[Raises hand] Count me in for the first run A 16x16 size sounds good to me. Are we going to make this "attachable" like the rules defined for other modular builds? I'm thinking in same dimensions as the dimensions of for example space stations on Classic-Space or Castle modules on Classic-Castle? I'm an all Fantasy kind of guy, so if the general mood is that this is to be historically correct, then I'll take my leave (no offense meant and none will be taken). Great idea ISC -
Do you think it'll matter when the tower is covered with yellow tiles? Using black as the base colour for windows and roof might make it blend in. Not that I've got nearly enough of either piece to do something like this.....yet
-
How is that done? Does that kind of construction include a bazillion of these:? I love that tower Do you have an "inventory" for the elements used to construct that gorgeus thing?
-
I am going to Berlin next week and wondered if anyone know any good stores for LEGO shopping in the city center? I'll be visiting LEGOland Discovery Centre naturlich and check the store there, but I think it's a great opportunity to do some serious shopping as well. Help Me! Hilfe Mich! Please add the adress of the store as well
-
Que? What do you mean? Should I add tiles? Where?
-
The last straight wall module has been constructed. This is only the first version and I'm sure I'll make a lot of changes. I've had a go at making a round tower in the middle of the wall section, but since I ran out of 1x1 round yellow bricks, I had to cut it in half - The final version will hopefully go all the way round and have an arched walkthrough in the middle. Here's the section so far: Version 1 Comments and questions are more than welcome. And yes, it was close to purgatory integrating the round part into the regular wall. There's a plate difference in height...so damn annoying when the section has to be equal height as the other sections.

Can I please be un-staffed until this raffle is over Great raffle with the greatest prize. Now we need this in red

I agree. I must have missed merging this topic. Thanks

Inspired by Copmike's pictures I resized the cylinder using 1x2 bricks and 1x1 round bricks. Later I'll show how it ends in my Yellow Castle Modular topic in the H&A forum. Pics:

This is one of the most hilarious topics on EB ever. C'mon guys - you were given your titles by the staff. Admins or mods, does it really matter that much?
-
I'm taking it as far as I can. Depending on my brick collection.
