I just recently finished my Unimog and I was looking though this topic. I was very impressed by a lot of the ideas... and annoyed by the time it took to load some of the images.
It's against our guidelines for one. But the reason why we have rules on this is;
1. It's a waste of bandwidth for everyone. It's very selfish to assume that everyone has unlimited speed and a generous cap.
2. There's no reason for it 99% of the time. It's just lazy to post an image 1024 x 768 or greater... and plain ridiculous posting one greater than 2000. That 4000x3000 image on my screen was shown at 33%. As an experiment I reduced it to my screen size (which is still too big) and the file size was 80% less.
3. It might even slow EB down because pages take longer to download. True we don't host the images, but it means the connections need to stay open longer. (This is harder to prove.)
A few months back we ran an announcement about this for a few weeks, and many thought it was a bit excessive, but it seems people still don't get it.
So please, stop posting huge images.
800x600 -> Big enough in most cases.
1024x768 -> If you've got a really good reason (such as a "Where's Wally" MOC) but don't make a habit of it.
1600x1200 -> Bigger than most screens. Pointless in 99% of cases; if you want to show loads of detail many smaller images would be more logical. Wallpapers would be one of the rare cases where it makes sense.
Higher -> Completely bonkers.
But I've got better things to do (on and off EB) than edit this entire topic so I probably won't remove any images, but I am asking nicely for people to stop it.
Sure you can. Resize them and host them elsewhere. I (and EB) do that all the time.
On a more positive note I'll see what I can do with mine. Thanks for the ideas!
