Ok, so i've finally got my ship into it's own topic now.... click on the link for more pics of her amid my Brickvention display! I also decided on a name - "The Basilisk's Gaze". :)

Right, now it's back to sorting for me... only 20 litres to go and i can start building something else! ;)

Ouch. I've been gone way too long! 600 some-odd notifications... three pages of GoH I haven't read... I hope responding to a two week old MOC is not seen as bumping something too old?

Anyway, great that your back Gabe! That ship looks lovely! Eager to see what everyone does for Challenge IV, looks like there have been some great ideas!

I'll probably need a couple days to get caught up but after that expect some builds!

Edit: Propping up Historica's freedom! (Where did I get that from though? :look: )

The Chronicler has returned!

Over the time you were gone, there was a smack talk skirmish between Avalonia and Kaliphlin (with some sprinkled Mitgardia and Nocturnus, of course).

Oh, not to mention that the Jarl of Mitgardia is missing, and that the Hand is marching on Queenscross and Albion. Having already been defeated at Mpya Stedor, I'm sure they'll be much more viscous.

You received that title after you opened up the character thread. I received mine the same day. They are from ISC. Well at least mine is, and a couple others.

Good to have you back!

Thanks, Mini, I think I'm a bit more caught up now... still have to read the Avalonian thread though (and the first page worth of MOCs... :sadnew: ).

Yes, mine was probably from ISC too...

Between Avalonia and Kaliphlin? Nocturnus seemed to be more against Kaliphlin - though yes I read the tight discussion ( )...

Edit: I'm just going to throw the last two pages - and probably part of the first page - to the wind as far as replying goes. I don't want to swamp the first page with what I think about week old MOCs, so to those of you who are already back there, there were some really nice ones, de Gothia in particular, I'm sorry I didn't get to reply earlier!

Wow, some awesome new (and completed) builds... sweet stuff DaMaximus and Kayne, nice to see the epic battles ramping up for the finale!

Thanks Kai... i know what you mean about feeling swamped with GoH backstory and mocs to catch up on btw - try 3 months of being away. I've just managed to finish the last of the post-Brickvention sorting marathon (phew), now i can get cracking on some new stuff for challenge 6! :classic:

Here's a WIP shot of an MOC I'm building right now. (Mobile phone photo, so the quality isn't that good) It's the west gate to the city of Messahmuk, which was heavily damaged in elemental attacks and is now being repaired. I'm going to add more vegetation, and a crane up on the wall to help with rebuilding. I'm also going to add a procession of troops heading out to reinforce Queenscross.

Any suggestions/criticism/feedback?

I'll probably try to expand on the guys next to the wall who are working on repairing the stonework. Maybe put a little forge in there or something, and maybe a cart or two. Maybe a downed tree or two would add to the general look of destruction. I'm probably also going to try to make the top of the gate and wall look a bit more destroyed. The gate and wall are purposefully rather plain, as it is an ancient gate, built before ornamentation was the architectural fashion. I'm not sure whether to add another baseplate to right of the front one to fill it out into a square (where the camels and stacked plates are). It might look better, but I don't really have anything to put there except sandscaping and vegetation. What do you all think?

NM, it looks good so far, nice and ruined though I'm not such a fan of that kind of multi-colored entrance path, personally I think it might be better without the green. The general shape is looking good, and so are the details you've got on the wall (windows, arrow slits). As far as adding another base plate, I'm a big fan of nice open desert, so I'd say go for it if you have enough tan left to sand-scape it with about the same consistency of the other sections. Or, if it fits with the rest of the build, an oasis or something of the sort (maybe a well) might look nice. Looking good, I'm eager to see the finished project!

Thanks for the feedback, Kai. I'm not totally liking the green 1x1 rounds either, so I'll probably yank those. I might also try to reduce the amount of dark-brown/reddish-brown on the road too; I think it's too much of a contrast with the lighter colors.

I think I have another tan baseplate lying around somewhere, so I might add that in and see how it looks. I've probably got enough tan plates to do the landscaping for it. Maybe I can put a couple of wooden shacks or tents for the stonemasons there. It will also give me more room to put a larger procession of troops if I want to.

Aah it has been too long since I saw these beautifull ancient gate of Messahmuk! It hurtend when I received the painting you sent to me! Those walls, such a damage they incorporated! Too bad we lost some excellent construction slaves (who were dressed up as javelin men) and those we have left have to repare the buildings who suffered due the battle :sceptic:

(ooc)

I really like the damaged effect you created so far!

I am not that big fan of green in the desert neither, but then again, Messahmuk lays in a delta... I think that if you choose to incorporate some green in it, you should add more of those colours then :classic:

The extra baseplate may give a nice effect as pointed by Kai. For sure when you are going to add wooden shacks etc!

NM. Looking good! Great to see another city of Kaliphlin. Which type of elemental did the destruction? If fire, I would put some black or brown charred areas in. As for at the base of the walls, maybe small temporary huts for the workers. I look forward to the crane, and maybe you could find a way to put in scaffolding to bring out more of the reconstruction vibe? The path doesn't bother me, but the green does stick out. I look forward to the final version.

On another note, I am glad to see more troops heading to Queenscross. Real life has moved the battle back until mid February. I have 14 days to pick up work on my dissertation and application so I am eligible for a fellowship that will allow me to stop teaching 10 classes a semester and concentrate on finishing my dissertation. That would make things much easier for me. So, I will not be building much in the next few weeks.

Although, since I initiated the January push, I will make sure to put something together tonight or tomorrow to participate. I think DaMax is the first and only to participate in our mini-event so far...

The scaffolding is a great idea; thanks. I've been thinking of workers huts too. An earth elemental did the damage, so no scorch marks necessary.

I have most of my Kaliphlin mini-challenge build done. I just have set dressing and character decisions to make. It will be set near Gurree Spring, with a tie-in to the Challenge V idea of magical sites being safe havens.

Next week I should have a small build sending Squire Greisun back to Mpya Stedor. I still have the breakdown of NOMEA to do, so parts will be more available.

Note from Aturl Prndrn, Minister of External Affairs:

The imposter carrying Sir Barold's weapon and helmet has been detained. His effects have been turned over to the centaur guard accompanying the herbologists. The clothing and shield turned out to be fake. How he accomplished disguising himself as Sir Barold so thoroughly is still a mystery. We can dispense with him here, or return him to Lord Sansael for prosecution.

I also have to purchase some paint for my Nocturnian characters. My local Ace store carries Krylon Fusion cans that are a good match for some Lego colors.

I'm a bit busy right now, both with Challenge VI and trying to wrap up that last Sci-Fi month entry (don't remind me about the deadline!), but I think I should be able to do something for the "mini-challenge" - I actually hadn't realized we were doing that, I guess I've slept since then. I remember that we were supposed to do something like a parting scene? - and, well, I guess this wasn't the idea, but perhaps it could tie into Challenge VI, or I guess more introductory - but anyone able to refresh my mind on any other details? Thanks...

NM, if your characters are going to re-build the wall, they are going to need wood. So maybe the start of a forest wouldn't be in-appropriate? Or a couple trees. Just if you needed to fill up space, really. But a few shacks and temporary buildings would look great and probably wouldn't be that hard either.

Ok... Those figs are going to go really well in Kaliphlin. BOTH factions!!!! Nice. And red could make its way into Nocturus, but the Greener guilds better start buying up chess pieces!!!

Posted

The castle seems fairly generic, but that is ok to buy for MOC'ing. I really like the lion/crown mix on the blue faction a lot! The barding for the new horses is great, and the armor for the knights is a must! Definitely excited for these to come out!

So... I was finishing my contribution for the mini challenge... and I realized that I broke the rules in a challenge I set!!!! haha. I made it two baseplates instead of one (You will see why). So if we do get a few and set these up for judging by the group, I can't participate. I should have pictures up in a little bit -- if my dog didn't break my camera when she knocked it off the table. (Fingers crossed)

It might be a good idea to set up a separate thread for the challenge, that way it would be easier to keep track of entries (post a link in the thread), plus it would be easier to keep track of the rules... was it supposed to be a certain size? :look:

I agree. I wasn't even aware that the mini challenge had even started.

It was back a ways.... We probably should have set it up. The size limit that NM proposed was 32x32.

It was supposed to be a January "Push" for free builds, but I think we could extend it. We never created an official contest, since no one got permission to give out prizes, there isn't any. It was just a plea to get Kaliphlin building. I will start a new page for it now and link back.

Oops, I forgot about the size limitation. Guess I won't be using my big off-to-war MOC for this one. Perhaps I'll try to create a smaller scene of just a few people leaving their families or something before joining the big troop.

Anyways, here's another iteration of the big departure MOC. Once again taken with a cell phone camera; apologies, but my wife has the real camera and is on a business trip until tonight.

I've positioned the troops; I don't think I can fit any more of them. I was hoping to fit more camels from the baggage train, but don't think I have room for that either. I like the extra baseplate; it gave me a lot more room for landscaping and stuff. You probably can't see them very well in this lousy photo, but there's a nice little shack back to the right for the workers, and a few stonemasons out working. There's a fallen palm tree, a few people watching the troops leave, some stray dogs, etc. I added a crane up on the gatehouse roof; still have to rig up the line for it. Instead of scaffolding, I rigged up a platform suspended from the roof on the left, with a worker repairing the gatehouse wall from it.

BTW, I tried to design this to fairly accurate in sizing. The gatehouse storeys are each 8 bricks high, which corresponds to about 10 feet. The wall between the gatehouse and smaller tower is 14 bricks to the parapet walk (17.5 feet), and the battlements (if they were all complete) add five more feet, for a total of 22.5 feet high, which is normal for medieval town walls. However, I did not try to make the wall thickness accurate -- they're only two feet thick, as opposed to 6 to 12 feet thick in real life.

My to-do list for this is currently: 1) rig up the crane, 2) find a blue flag, and 3) add a few more spectators. Any other suggestions?
