Very nice work thus far. A suggestion if I may- looks like your guns (cannons) are directly above each other on each deck in the photo- they should be staggered like they are on the model! As for the masts- if you look around the forum you will find lots of "brick built" masts, in other words- masts that aren't prefabricated by Lego. maybe one of those designs would be best?
-
Since I am a lawyer by trade and a Lego Pirate enthusiast, perhaps I should try my hand at the barrister's office... yes? available? Also- is Frontbeast doing both dock areas... or is there room for another?
-
Heh- anyone who has seen previous builds of mine might be able to guess... I attached it with magnets!
-
I really like the shape, though it looks a little bit like it sags in the middle... Anyhow... I also love the yardarms and the colors, this is an excellent ship! Are the sails trimmed so you could let them loose and sail under full sheets?
-
I would agree! I also need some more reddish brown tiles so it might happen if they are cheap enough and from the same BL store.
-
I would love it to be in pearl gold- but as far as I am aware I can not get that part in that color.
-
It is more like I actually have the black grates more than anything else... I tried it with tan ones, but I didn't like it. If I come across some more brown ones I might try it- but I do not think I have 5 of them available!
-
Yeah- and all that Lego makes it EXTREMELY heavy! It is two studs wider than the previous version and all the tiled decks have really made the weight really shoot up! Still to do: Long boats, lanterns on back, get more tiles, rigging, sails, work on details.
-
The crab on the back is awesome! Is there a good way to connect the sides of the ship to the hull at the bottom?
-
Still working- some more updates... Need more light for better pictures- darned northern hemisphere in December! I need to redo the sails eventually and there is still plenty of detail work to do- but there is some nice progress here... I think...
-
I am thinking I am going to go with black as you have suggested here. I used it before and I like it better than the blue (though I think the blue will need to be used on another ship project soon). I would like to have used some color- but it just doesn't work-- I will go with black and gold with some occasional dark red accents. A double cabin would work especially well if I had a quarter deck that started much further up the ship or if I but the second cabin below the current one- I am hesitant to do either as I like the curved stairs and I would lose a lot of the tumblehomme effect... I will see how she looks with the black first and then go from there.
-
Agreed- I am trying to figure out what to do to fix it... any ideas? I assume it will require some black!
-
UPDATE Well some of it is better- some of it I am not yet sold on... I wonder if the black was better... hmmm... well anyhow I did work on some other stuff that I am satisfied with... A few new shots of what I am working on- I shot these in a hurry heading out the door. I am not completely sold on the dark blue- but I am thinking of some other changes that might held me feel better about it... still working!

Spanish Imperial Galleon - Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion
ZCerberus replied to Bonaparte's topic in Pirate MOCs
Excellent work guys! I really like the color work and shape. This really does look like a Spanish ship of that time! I almost think it has become a Eurobricks requirement to do your own rigging now- Phred might have started that tradition but you two have really done a good job with it. I also like the sails. Very time period appropriate. What material do you usually use for the sails Greeny? (I ask Greeny because I know he has made several sails of this similar type before) If only it were a little wider! I suppose there isn't much one can do about that when working with the prefabbed hulls, especially when you did such a good job with the shape- that is perhaps my one complaint. I can see a few places where you had to hack down the size to make it work- but it did work with the overall shape very well indeed! -
oops. The latern was only there because I didn't want it rolling around on the deck (I made a pair of them and the sailor was holding one.) The intent is to have something hanging there- just not exactly sure what that will be yet (or how). As for the boxiness- It is hard to acieve a good slope... I am not sure the very back under the cabin is how I want it yet. I think if I rework that it will help wit the boxiness to a degree.
-
The length is about right- it mostly just needs details (like a stern) and the bow will be about 4 studs longer when I get around to fixing that! How about that stern... well I am working on it... not sure if I like the black and gold. I wish I could go with another color- but I am not sure I know what color to use... I also wish I had a bunch of pearl gold 1x1 plates...hmmm... As you can see the slide outs need some work too. I think there is going to be a little sky light where the giant hole is up top- I also need to finish the back quarter with some slops- I wish I had gold slopes- but it will likely be all black :( I could use a little help with trying to pick new colors for the cabin. The samari sword sword is there solely to make that portion less black- I will likely replace it if I can find a better gold piece (assuming the gold stays as is)

WIP: Superbe, a French 80 gun Ship of the Line
ZCerberus replied to BrickPerfection's topic in Pirate MOCs
I am not sure 1 stud = 1 foot is quite accurate- it seems to me that it should be a little more than a foot per stud- but like Teddy said 1 stud = 1 foot is a very practical scale. Besides, I am not sure Lego ever cared about making things to scale anyway! As for the ship- I like the curved bottom- it looks like the plan is to build only above the waterline (no complaints here) though I wonder if it is a bit too high out of the water. Ships of the line were heavy the lowest deck was much closer to the water than other ships. Nothing major- just something to consider. I do like this color scheme and I think it works with the stripes as you have done it. Greenhair might be onto something by suggesting adding something to break up the upper black portion to be more ornate. Greeny is an excellent MOCer so I would really consider his input. I have found it very difficul to build ships with nice curves, so I will be interested to see how yours turns out- looks promising so far. Good luck!! -
That's actually a MOC AT-ST. It is a lot bigger than the system AT-STs but it is smaller than the UCS one.
-
Well the original scheme was black with a little red- and the red did pop- but I needed a LOT of tiles to do the snot walls on the ship... I had a whole bunch of the dark red tiles from the pick-a-brick wall at the Mall of America. Plus I think Dark Red is my favorite color- I almost wish I had more d. red and less black- but that just isn't possible. I hope with some good lighting the ship will look great with a dark red/black/gold scheme. On the Superbe- I like the color scheme- any other comments I will make in that thread. I don't specirfically remember that ship... I originally wanted to use some copper tubing up there but it was a little too short. Then Brickbeard's Bounty went on sale at TRU so I had extra black tubing and wen with this design. Is yours also black? I really wish I could have done it in gold or dark red- I assume Achille is on the forum for me to take a look at. Those of us who have tried to make ships without using the prefabbed Lego hulls like to call them "brick-built" hulls. The Lego hulls are only 16 studs wide (and only 12 if using the smaller ones) and the Phantom is about twice as wide as that, standard hulls just wouldn't hack it!
-
The Phantom has always been the pride and joy of Admiral Buress’s fleet. It, however, never photographed well because it was just too black. I lightened it up by making the decks reddish brown- but overall it was still just too colorless. Here is a link to the old girl... The Phantom It had a good shape and size- but it was just too darn black to pick up any details. Though black is still a major color- I decided to do some things to enhance the look of the ship… The changes: 1. Less black- more dark red! 2. Bigger gun ports! 3. Better placement of capstan (and it works better too), deck opening moved to below long boat rack. 4. Deck tiling! 5. New bow new headrails- though I wish they were gold- better shape and better color transition (I think) though I am going to have make some changes to this again... see # 7 below 6. New stern I think I am going to go with a more classic look here... Technically the quarter deck should start just in front of the main mast and not just in front of the mizzen, but I am going for looks and not accuracy. I haven't started work on the cabin- but it will likely follow a slightly different color scheme... maybe more reddish brown? Not quite sure yet. 7. Wider. The whole shebang is going to be 4 studs wider than it was previously. I decide this while working on the middle of the three sections, after I redid the bow. This means the bow is now also going to be getting a make over again. The bow will also likely have to be 2-4 studs longer as well. I think this will mean another gun on the forecastle.

Great work. I do like the masonary technic- but once again it is your landscaping skills that impress me most. I have a question... do you have all of the coastline MOCs still assembled-- or do you have to take pieces from the old for the new?
-
Umm hello! I luckily happen to live in Minnesota where there is a nearby Lego store. The "pick-a-brick" wall there often has odd elements that really help my acquire parts. Other than that I spend too much money on them ;)
-
Not made with prefabbed- the ship is probably about 24 studs wide at the widest point and 20-22 studs on the main deck- quite a bit bigger than the prefabs (16 or 12)-- though maybe it should be 2-4 studs wider still... anyhow, that is the whole problem with all the black- it looks like a giant blob of black and you can't see any of the details! I do have quite a few prefabbed ships lying around- most of them much smaller than the Phantom is... but how about this one? I think it is the first one in the ship index!! Not as impressive and a couple of years old now- but back then it was one of the biggest ships on the forum. Now some of the mightest ship builders build creations that blow this one out of the water- but at the time it was pretty cool... even if it doesn't have full rigging or realistic dimensions!
-
This ship isn't technically finished but I have decided it is "too black" as is. Though perhaps this isn't the right place to discuss it, I am working on revamping the ship... I am switching the red to the burgundy "dark red" color and making more of the exterior dark red instead of black. I already switched the decking over to reddish brown, but some of the cool details, like the front statue details, the rigging and the anchors get lost in the “big blob of black” that is most of this ship. I haven’t decided if I am going to switch up the cabin structure yet- but I may go with a more traditional look back there as well. I also made the gun ports bigger so I will be going from 16 guns per side on the gun deck down to about 12-14 with a corresponding amount less on the main deck. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on “The Phantom”!
