Very cute. I like this.

It's hard to judge with the harshness of the flash, but I think simply recoloring the set doesn't really give us an idea of what this set would be as a kingdoms set- I think some of the design should change as well. Any ideas on changing up any of the design outside of the colors to make it fit into the kingdoms... umm... kingdom?
-
Modifying would include print wiping. Sort of odd that you could put on a decal but not take one off, but I think you could see why that is. Yes. So long as the base plate or irregular base does not exceed 256 or 1,024 stud area respectively. This build, for example, is on a 32 x 32 baseplate with a border that sits outside of that all the way around.
-
A border is considered reasonable overhang. 4 studs over the baseplate should be fine so long as it isn't something like 4 studs over on all sides. The Obsidian Spike for example would qualify as reasonable overhang if the limit was 48 x 48. It has a border and the tendrils over hang the baseplate. Again it would be too big for the "build challenge" here since that limit is 32 x 32, but it would meet qualifications if 48 x 48 was the limit.

We have non-deadly pumpkin pies as well, though if you eat one of those, would you be a cannibal?

Yes back to the MOC please.
-
Nope, any rivalry with me and DC would always be friendly of course, but it is actually a reference to the enchanted pumpkin pies we have in Nocturnus. Don't eat one or you'll end up like our friend in the photo.

Good working getting a clean background, but you need some work with the lighting to get rid of the shadows. I tend to photograph outside in the shade so there is plenty of natural light and no shadows. You also have at least one photo that is out of focus on a close up. You need to use the "macro" setting on close ups. It generally will look like a little flower somewhere on the camera. The other focus problem could be that you are moving your hands to much when pushing the camera button. To overcome that, I use the timer on the camera. I set it to wait one second before taking a picture so pressing the button doesn't move the camera when it is ready to shoot.

Lovely trees.

DC- Yes, it is hard to work largely in a single color that is admittedly hard to photograph. I learned that a combination of build techniques and photography tricks can make even black manageable. Photo/ build tip- The big keys for me were to try to get depth in each wall section so there was something to pick-up while looking at the build from a distance and then learning the key to photographing black is reflections. Not only is black dark but it is highly reflective which makes the flash and glare your enemies. The reflective nature of the black also gives you an opportunity to increase your picture quality though. I surrounded the MOC in white poster board at all kinds of crazy angles and when the white reflected in the black walls, the details became more visible. I had a hard time getting the top section to reflect correctly because it is at angle compared to the rest of the build, but the pictures turned out pretty well. LD (shame on you for trying to sneak in my real name again!)- I did go a bit spike crazy here and there with the white but it was all in an attempt to make it both more evil looking and to get some contrasting colors in with the black to make stuff like the angled walls to pop.

Great stories, great pictures, great tribes. You guys knocked it out of the park! I already have picked a round winner- but I am still deep in thought on round 2. Check out the second Post of the Nocturnus thread to make sure I got everyone's tribes up!

de Gothia's badge is deserved and this MOC is good as well. It is asymmetrical, it has good color combos, good figure posing and excellent photography. I do not know if Beery was trying to say he thought this MOC was below some standard as LD and dG seemed to indicate, but if he was, putting down someone's MOC is not a way to earn a badge for yourself, in fact it will have quite the opposite effect.

How Many Mirkwood Elf Army Sets Do You Plan on Buying?
ZCerberus replied to Deathleech's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I'll plan to buy 2 or 3... But over time I am sure it will spiral out of control. I need to start using tan in builds I guess!- 102 replies

Book II - Nocturnus: Guild sign-up and Discussion

In for city. -
You've grown so much Kai. Really outstanding work.
-
Sides will be posted on or around Nov 1. Painted/altered are a no. 3rd party accessories are okay so long as not from a clone brand. That was the Book I rule as well.
-
Not the right place for this and I don't appreciate the tone, but I assure you, the Orcs are real. I would assume all the CH6 winners didn't receive anything then. I will consult with the holder of the Orcs to see what the hang-up is.

Conwy Castle(built by my little brother)
ZCerberus replied to soccerkid6's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Oh little brother of Mitgardian wunderkind, you are also a wunderkind. Nice details and kudos to him for already discovering that asymmetry is the way to go. excellent build. I'll recruit him to Nocturnus before you know it. -
The Obsidian Spike is the home to Lord Raavage and the Black Spire. Sitting atop a rocky ledge in the swamp lands, the Spike only has one above ground entrance, though it is said miles of tunnels sit below the surface where worker Drow bring supplies, news and captives to Raavages home. This build is actually fairly detailed, but all the black makes it very hard to photograph. I think I learned a few tricks along the way and finally got a few good pictures in the end! I updated the photo on the frontpage and in the challenge 1 thread to reflect the superior shots here. And some fun details to check out of the build! Anything else I missed might be viewable on this set in my flickr account.
